Smith was the surname of a wizarding family that descended from Helga Hufflepuff,[1] one of the founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Their family heirloom, Helga Hufflepuff's Cup, was stolen from Hepzibah Smith by Tom Marvolo Riddle,[1] who then turned it into one of his Horcruxes.[6] It was eventually destroyed by Hermione Granger, who stabbed it with a Basilisk fang.[5]
Known family members
- Hepzibah Smith — a very wealthy witch who was murdered by Tom Riddle[1]
- Mr Smith — Zacharias Smith's father.[3]
- Sally Smith — a student at Hogwarts in the 1990s.[4]
- Zacharias Smith — a Hufflepuff student at Hogwarts in the 1990s and member of Dumbledore's Army,[2][7] though he abandoned the D.A. during the Battle of Hogwarts.[5]
Etymology
Smith is the most common surname in the United Kingdom and the United States. It originally comes from the Anglo-Saxon word smitan, meaning “to smite” or “to strike”. The occupation smith or blacksmith was derived from this word, and Smith thus became an occupational surname.
