Gilderoy Lockhart: "Looks like...a snake."
Harry Potter: "It's a snake skin.'"
Ronald Weasley: "Woah. Whatever shed that must be like, sixty feet long. Or more!"
— Lockhart, Potter, and Weasley in the Chamber of Secrets[src]
Snake skin is believed to be useful for both good and evil in magic. Powdered rattlesnake skin, or the rattle itself, was used in spells to bring good luck. Snakeskin was also meant to be able to reverse spells that cause madness. However, people believed that snake blood fed to an enemy would cause snakes to grow inside them. Spells like this have been used in North America and Latin America.

Powdered boomslang skin is an ingredient of the Polyjuice Potion.[1]
