A snowball is a small, compacted sphere of snow and ice, usually thrown by one individual at another in play or as a prank.[5]

A German-language wizarding newspaper reported in 1926 that a cursed snowball had been discovered at the Othmarschen Christmas Market.[6]

During winter of the 1991–1992 school year, Fred and George Weasley bewitched several snowballs to follow Professor Quirrell and to bounce off the back of his turban, thus unwittingly hitting Lord Voldemort in the face.[2] On Christmas of the same year, Harry Potter, Ron, Fred, and George spent a happy afternoon having a snowball fight on the grounds.
During Christmas in the 1994–1995 school year before the Yule Ball, Harry Potter, Ron, Fred, George, and Ginny Weasley had a snowball fight with each other while Hermione Granger chose to watch instead of participating.[7]
The Weasley twins pelted the windows of the Gryffindor Tower common room with snowballs in December 1995.[3] Their younger brother, Ron, opened a window to scold them, and ended up getting hit by a snowball for his trouble.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry hits Draco Malfoy and his gang with snowballs outside the Shrieking Shack. In the novel, however, he throws mud instead.
- In LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, Draco Malfoy makes an igloo and uses it as a tank to shoot snowballs at the player. The tank is located in the same spot where Malfoy's gang was attacked by Harry in the third film with snowballs. Draco also curses a giant snowman on High Street in Hogsmeade to throw snowballs at a wizard in red leaving Dominic Maestros.
