"Excellent work on your first case! The Hippogriff will be relocated, so it won't interfere with the Cannons any more… Not that it'll help their chances in the league. But what a find — and on your first day, too! It looks like we can expect great things from you!"

The Something in the Air case was an investigation conducted by the British Ministry of Magic on an attack on Gordon Horton, the Keeper of the Chudley Cannons Quidditch team.[1]

Horton sustained a concussion after a creature threw him from his broomstick while he was practising alone, in the Chudley Cannons training grounds. The Ministry soon discovered that an Hippogriff had been nesting in a nearby bell tower, and that it had attacked Horton as it perceived him to be a threat to its young.[1]

History[]

Mathilda Grimblehawk: "Glad to see you're awake, Gordon. How are you feeling?"
Gordon Horton: "I feel like I caught a Bludger to the head. Wouldn't be the first time…"
Mathilda Grimblehawk: "Well, that was quite a fall you took! We're from the Ministry. Can you tell us what happened?"
Gordon Horton: "I was just getting in a bit of extra practise with the Quaffle when something came swooping out of the sky and hit me! It all happened so fast, but… whatever it was came from somewhere near the old bell tower, I think."

Gordon Horton at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries

The Chudley Cannons groundskeeper reportedly heard terrible screeching from the training pitch and fled for help, calling the British Ministry of Magic.[1]

Officer Langarm of Magical Law Enforcement summoned Mathilda Grimblehawk of the Beast Division (and her partner, who had just been welcomed to his first day working at the Ministry) to investigate. Once at the Chudley Cannon training grounds, they discovered Gordon Horton, still unconscious from his fall, and took him to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, where he was put under the care of Healer Abasi.[1]

The investigators were then told that Horton's kit had been badly torn, the damage suggesting by something with sharp claws. Once Horton woke up, he told them that he saw something swooping out of the sky coming from the Old Bell Tower just before he was knocked from his broomstick. At the bell tower, they found a large nest and, upon close examination, found eggshell fragments that they identified as being an Hippogriff's after assembling them with the aid of a Mending Charm.[1]

Upon returning to the Ministry of Magic, Mathilda Grimblehawk immediately saw to it that the would be relocated so it would not interfere with the Quidditch players any more.[1] Upon informing her partner about it, she proceeded to suggest that they went somewhere to celebrate the conclusion of their first case together, but Officer Langarm immediately gave them another assignment.[2]
