The topic of this article is of a real-life subject that has been mentioned "in-universe" in a canon source. The Harry Potter Wiki is written from the perspective that all information presented in canon is true (e.g., Hogwarts really existed), and, as such, details contained in this article may differ from real world facts.

South America is a continent in the western hemisphere. The known wizarding nations that comprise it are Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Venezuela.

Magical community

The Amazon rainforest along with the Brazilian municipalities of Caxambu, Manaus and Teresina and the Peruvian town of Tarapoto are the known locations that house the South American wizarding community.

Although mostly uninhabited, the Patagonian Desert has received a large amount of people from the international wizarding community in 2014, due to the 427th Quidditch World Cup has been based there.

Magical government

The known magical governing bodies in the continent are the Argentinian Council of Magic, with the witch Valentina Vázquez as its President in 2014, and the Brazilian Ministry of Magic.

Magical education

Castelobruxo, one of the eleven wizarding schools, is located amid the Amazon rainforest in northern Brazil. It takes students from all over the continent.

Magical games and sports

The Argentinian National Quidditch team has reached the quarter-finals of the Quidditch World Cup at least once in the 20th century.
- In 1877, half of the team were found tied up in the basement of a bar in Cardiff, Wales, after the Tournament that Nobody Remembers.
The Brazilian National Quidditch team has won five Quidditch World Cups and was the runner-up in the 2014 Quidditch World Cup.
- The team was also a finalist in the 1982 Quidditch World Cup.
The Peruvian National Quidditch team is considered to be the best team from South America.
- Also the Tarapoto Tree-Skimmers are the most famous Peruvian Quidditch team.

Castelobruxo is implied to be as old as Hogwarts, that is, over a thousand years.
In 1993, the yearly International Warlock Convention was held in Brazil.
In 2014, the 427th Quidditch World Cup was based in the Patagonian Desert, Argentina.
The Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder was invented by the wizarding community in Peru.
- Also the Caxambu Style Borborygmus Potion was developed in Caxambu, Brazil.
The Dragon Pox is a potentially fatal disease related to the Peruvian Vipertooth. It was possibly originated in South America.

Behind the scenes

The wand was a European invention, and some cultures traditionally did not rely upon wands for performing magic. So It is possible that Salazar Slytherin introduced the wand to South America, as he likely travelled there to acquire the Snakewood for his wand, which is a native species of tree from Coastal regions of northeast South America.
Very little is known about South American wandlore. Though it is possible Snakewood and Dragon Heartstring from the Peruvian Vipertooth are substances used.
