Augustus Rookwood, a Death Eater spy
Spying was an activity that involved somebody getting close to somebody of importance, either without them knowing (e.g. hiding near them) or with them knowing (e.g. infiltrating an organisation), to relay vital information to somebody else.
History[]
In 1932, Yusuf Kama was ordered to spy on Gellert Grindelwald in Nurmengard.[1]
During the First Wizarding War, Augustus Rookwood, an Unspeakable employed by the British Ministry of Magic, acted as a spy for Lord Voldemort in the Ministry as a Death Eater, passing on important information to him.[2]
Peter Pettigrew was also a spy for Voldemort as member of the Order of the Phoenix, in the First Wizarding War.[3]
Patricia Rakepick and Severus Snape, who heavily disliked each other, used students at Hogwarts to spy on each other.[4]
After Lily Potter's death in 1981 at the hands of Lord Voldemort, Severus Snape secretly defected from the Death Eaters and became a spy for the Order of the Phoenix.[5]
In early 1997, Harry Potter ordered house-elves Dobby and Kreacher to spy on Draco Malfoy to confirm his suspicions that Draco was a Death Eater.[6]
