Stalactites above the entrance to Vault 713 at Gringotts Wizarding Bank

Harry Potter: "I never know. What's the difference between a stalagmite and a stalactite?"
Rubeus Hagrid: "Stalagmite's got an 'm' in it. An' don' ask me questions just now, I think I'm gonna be sick."
— Exchange between Harry Potter and Rubeus Hagrid while riding a Mine Cart to Vault 687[src]

A stalactite is a rocky formation that can be found on the ceiling of a cave. When a drop of water flows down the stalactite, the water evaporates and leaves a mineral deposit of calcite. This slowly increases the length and thickness of the stalactite. The corresponding formation on the floor of a cave is known as a stalagmite.[1]

There were huge stalagmites and stalactites by an underground lake in the Gringotts Wizarding Bank vault area.[2] A number of these were fractured during the escape of Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger on the back of a Ukrainian Ironbelly on 1 May 1998 following their break-in.[3]
