Starthistle was a magical plant used as an ingredient in potions. Remus Lupin kept a jar of it in his office during his tenure as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in 1993 and 1994.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- Starthistle probably refers to Centaurea calcitrapa, common in southern England, which was once used to treat kidney disorders.[2]
- The plant pictured appears to be millet, a plant eaten by small birds, and very different from Centaurea calcitrapa. It may be a magical variant.
Appearances[]
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (film) (First appearance)
