The Starthistle was a magical plant used as an ingredient in potions.
Description[]
It had a green bulbous structure at the base, with thick, spiky leaves that protruded in various directions. At the top of the plant, bright pink or purple petals emerged, which contrasted with the green at the base, indicating flowering. Its seeds were white with pink spiky tips.[1] When dried, it turned white and could be used in potions.[2]
History[]
During the 19th century, Starthistles were grown in the Hogwarts greenhouses.[1] Remus Lupin kept a jar of it in his office during his tenure as Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in 1993 and 1994.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- Starthistle probably refers to Centaurea calcitrapa, common in southern England, which was once used to treat kidney disorders.[3]
- The plant pictured appears to be millet, a plant eaten by small birds, and very different from Centaurea calcitrapa. It may be a magical variant.
