The sun is the star at the centre of the solar system and the primary source of light and energy for Earth, dwarfing all other celestial objects in size and influence.[1] The sun and its shine also played crucial roles in the wizarding world.
Overview[]
A sundial is a device used to tell time by tracking the position of the sun. It works by casting a shadow onto a flat surface marked with hour lines, with the shadow's movement indicating the time of day.[2] The Stone Circle was a sundial.[3]
In tessomancy, the divination of reading tea leaves, the sun represented great happiness. On 2 September 1993, during Professor Trelawney's Divination class, Ron Weasley spotted the shape of the sun in Harry Potter's tea cup and predicted happiness.[4]
To brew the Animagus potion, a silver teaspoon of dew used in its preparation had to be collected from a place untouched by sunlight or human feet. During the potion brewing process, which took until the arrival of a storm, one must place the tip of their wand over their heart at every sunrise and sundown and recite an incantation.[5]
History[]
There were many hills and mountains overlooking the Scottish Highlands, where the sunrise and sunset could be seen. Hogwarts Castle, positioned on a cliff, was one of them.[6][7][8]
In the later part of the 1995–1996 school year, as Dumbledore's Army departed the Forbidden Forest for the Ministry of Magic in London via six Thestrals, the sun was setting.[9] Sunny Spells, a round yellow bottle likely enchanted to create light or dispel clouds, was available for purchase at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes in 1996.[10]
After Harry, Ron, and Hermione Granger escaped from Gringotts Wizarding Bank on 1 May 1998 using the freed dragon, they leapt into a lake from its back after flying a safe distance, landing just as the sun was setting.[11]
