Sybill Trelawney: "Oh, that? It's been broken for years. Cracked in a great and terrible struggle during the Battle of Hogwarts, actually. I have not used it to divine since."
Student: "Then why keep it?"
Sybill Trelawney: "It serves as a reminder of the futility of defying fate."
— Sybill and a student talking about the crystal ball[src]

This cracked crystal ball belonged to Professor Sybill Trelawney. It was the one she used to knock out the werewolf Fenrir Greyback during the Battle of Hogwarts. She kept it on her desk to remind her of the futility of defying fate.[1]

History[]

Professor Trelawney had foreseen that great tragedy would befall the school and that many of the defenders would not make it. Even though she didn't want to believe it, there was nothing she could do to save them.[1]

During the Battle of Hogwarts on 2 May 1998, Professor Trelawney fought by dropping crystal balls on enemies' heads. When she saw Gryffindor student Lavender Brown being attacked, she successfully knocked out Fenrir Greyback by hitting his head with this crystal ball, causing it to crack.[2] Professor Trelawney thought she had saved Lavender from her tragic fate, but unfortunately, her injuries were just too great.[1]

In the 2010s, Professor McGonagall sent a student to ask Sybill if she could take over Professor Flitwick's curfew patrol. The student was curious about the cracked crystal ball, and Professor Trelawney told them the story.[1]
