Reference Error on Main Page

Hey guys, there seems to be a referencing error on the Main Page. I looked at the page source but sadly could not find the source of the error. It may be also be coming from the transcluded templates being used on the Main Page. Anyways, just was passing by and thought you should know this. On another note, I must say you guys have a terrific Main Page.--Spartacus [ TalkCentral ] 16:25, November 16, 2013 (UTC)

That comes from the "On This Day" section. Anytime the dates listed are referenced in the original date article, the reference is carried over to the current date template. But since the Main Page doesn't include the References list the date article does, it shows up as an error. - Nick O'Demus 16:29, November 16, 2013 (UTC)
If this bugs you, you could add a hidden reflist, like this:
 • {{reflist}}
Put on its own line at the end of the page (or at least after the references appear) and reference tags like this[1] won't give an error. Otherwise, you could add a visible reflist (maybe inside a scrolling list to reduce the impact) to the bottom of "On This Day". --xensyriaT 18:20, November 16, 2013 (UTC)

New page layout

What do people think of the new look? I personally find the fact that the only search option is at the top, above the adds disturbing, and the need to specify whether or not the searcher wishes to search only this wiki annoying at best, and very dissapointing at worst. I'm all for fixing things that are broken, and for changing things up now and again, but this feels like the opposite of improving the user interface, and I for one greatly dislike it. What does everyone else think about it? Dr. Galenos (talk) 18:48, April 30, 2014 (UTC)

Custom cursor

I'm not good at working on wikia's so I probably posted this in the wrong section. Anyways, I had an idea. What do you all think of a custom cursor/mouse? (If you don't get what I mean, check the FNAF wiki, it has a custom cursor.) The cursor could simply be a wand, and if you want to be more creative you could make the wand glow on links. Well, that was my idea.

TheElementalPhoenix (talk) 04:28, January 8, 2015 (UTC)TheElementalPhoenix

If this idea is taken up, it should be done in such a way that users can opt out of it. I remember, several years back, being on a site which had a custom Hallowe'en cursor, and many users (including me) found it annoying; then it turned out that the cursor (provided by Comet Cursor) was spyware. — RobertATfm (talk) 18:02, June 2, 2015 (UTC)

Gryffindor Edits

I made some edits to the Gryffindor page, and due to the fact I'm new here, I did not follow the appropriate decorum and post here first. (Or at least I think I'm supposed to post here first? I am not certain.)

I added a definition of chivalry to the "behind the scenes" section of Gryffindor, and I also added a few house traits as well.

I have tweaked them a few times since putting them up, added a few punctuation marks, changed a word or two so it seemed to fit and flow better. I find that after reviewing my writing later I oftentimes find things I missed the first time around. I also changed the existing "strong of will" trait to "strength of will" as I felt that was worded more correctly.

My apologies for not posting here first. Also, if my edits are not needed or unnecessary I apologize for that as well.

Seriously, don't worry. This is a wiki, after all, the point being that anybody can edit. If there's a problem with your edits, somebody will spot it and point it out (politely, right, folks! ;-) or maybe even simply fix it themselves, but you can pick it up as gradually as necessary. —Phil | Talk 13:13, June 22, 2015 (UTC)

Cascade Protection

Why is cascading protection being used on this page? This is causing the protection of templates that don't need to be protected in this manner, such as {{-}}, which makes it difficult for people to edit. Could the cascading protection be lifted? --Sajuuk 12:49, February 13, 2016 (UTC)

The question arises of why you would want to edit {{-}}…do you have another example of something you cannot do because of the cascading protection? FYI {{-}} is itself protected so you wouldn't be able to edit it anyway! HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 17:49, February 13, 2016 (UTC)
Cascading protection should pretty much never be used, there is almost no instance of a reason to use that feature, because it protects other pages unintentionally.
And yes, I already know it's protected by itself, but cascading protection is always a bad idea due to the ease of being able to lock down pages by mistake, simply because they're transcluded onto the main page. I am simply requesting the cascading protection be removed, so that other templates aren't being protected needlessly. --Sajuuk 18:25, February 13, 2016 (UTC)

I believe an generalization is in order, don't you?

Sorry if I used that word wrong, but I feel that, with so much more information from Pottermore, that we should make an effort to make some articles more general. For example, Aurors. Aurors are no longer only 'dark wizard hunters', that's the British Aurors. The American Aurors aren't once mentioned to deal with Dark Magic, they respond to threats against magical secrecy and is sent after Newt Scamander.

Defence Against the Dark Arts isn't only taught to at Hogwarts, so it's misguiding to describe it only as a 'core subject' at Hogwarts, but instead give a brief summary of what the subject is all about and then describe how it is taught at several schools, including Hogwarts, and have existing info re-written a little. Ninclow (talk) 12:23, July 1, 2016 (UTC)

I don’t think we should change a lot of the articles yet. We only have some trailers of the film in which they appear to only be helping clean up Newt’s mess. Even though the main reason for Aurors would be to stop Dark witches and wizards, I don’t think this has only been the only thing they ever do in Britain. We know they deal with Dark objects too, and help keep things in order. As the article on the wikia states, they are a unit of highly-trained, specialist officers. Think of them like the police – they help out in any field which may be dangerous. I think this is the case for other countries like America too. Like you pointed out, the trailers for the film and some information include some Aurors trying to clean up what Newt has done. Newt’s briefcase and the creatures who escaped fit the category of dangerous. We do also know now that in the 17th century, Webster Boot worked as an Auror for hire in America and he took one Dark wizard from there to England. So until Jo says otherwise, we have to assume Aurors in other countries have the same purpose as they do in Britain. And the ones in Britain aren’t just there to stop Dark wizards. There are other dangerous things too which they are needed for. I don’t think they just wait around for another Dark witch or wizard to pop up!
And unfortunately, up until a couple of days ago, no other school has been mentioned by Jo to be teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts. The only school mentioned to have teached the Dark Arts in any way so far is Durmstrang, which teaches the Dark Arts, not Defence Against. However, having said that, we do now know that Ilvermorny teaches the subject too since Rionach Steward is mentioned to have teached it in the new Pottermore article about the school. But the wikia article doesn't say Defence Against the Dark Arts is "only" teached at Hogwarts. It merely says it is a core subject at Hogwarts and up until now, it was the only school mentioned to teach it. So we just need to edit the article to include how Ilvermorny teaches it too – whether it is also a core subject we do not know - but we don't need to go overboard about changing everything yet. I don't know whether we should add a simple note to the page saying that Ilvermorny teaches it too or whether to make a new page for the Ilvermorny one. Does anyone have any thoughts? But we don’t know how they teach it yet such as what topics they cover - just that they teach it. So there isn’t a lot to say yet. –- May32 User talk:May32|talk) 18:48, July 1, 2016 (UTC)
"I don’t think they just wait around for another Dark witch or wizard to pop up!"
You're argument is invalid.
"'We do also know now that in the 17th century, Webster Boot worked as an Auror for hire in America and he took one Dark wizard from there to England."
We also know that North America had no magical governing body prior to MACUSA and any so-called Aurors for hire would be freelancing and taking on whatever assignments available to them for their butter and cheese, such as transporting a wanted criminal in hiding back to England, which does not reflect what I called 'American Aurors'. for the sake of discussion.
"- but we don't need to go overboard about changing everything yet."
You just re-validated yourself. :p Ninclow (talk) 22:00, July 1, 2016 (UTC)
I’m sorry but I don’t see how my argument is invalid. I don’t really see what point your trying to make. We don’t need to change what is already written on the Auror page until we have definite proof that an Auror is another country does not fulfil the same role as they do in Britain. The main purpose we have been given of Aurors from Jo is to stop Dark wizards and witches but they have done other things too. We don’t know what role the American Aurors completely fulfil. The film is not out yet. Aurors helping Newt or trying to put these dangerous creatures away doesn’t mean they don’t stop Dark witches and wizards too. So no, we don’t need to change the Auror page to say only British Aurors hunt Dark witches and wizards until we have proof they are the only ones. My point about Webster Boot was to show that before MACUSA was made, there have been people in America working as some kind of Auror searching for Dark witches and wizards as far back as the 17th century. Why would they change the purpose of an Auror after the formation? So my argument is valid. We don’t need to change anything on this page until we have any proper new information to tell us otherwise.
And I don’t know if it was a mistake but please don’t delete the rest of my reply. We only know Ilvermorny is the only other school which teaches Defence Against the Dark Arts. None of Jo’s work about other schools mention the subject except Durmstrang, where it is just the Dark Arts, not Defence Against. So except for maybe a note on the page saying Ilvermorny taught the subject too and a little line or two saying what little we do know (we don’t even know if it was a core subject yet or what topics they cover) – or maybe making a new Defence Against the Dark Arts page for Ilvermorny, we don’t need to change the entire article to point this out. And please try to sign all your messages so it doesn't get confusing to others about who wrote the reply - its an easy mistake sometimes but it keeps things tidy :) –- May32 (talk) 20:50, July 1, 2016 (UTC)
"Why would they change the purpose of an Auror after the formation? So my argument is valid. We don’t need to change anything on this page until we have any proper new information to tell us otherwise."
Easy. There never were 'some kind of Auror searching for Dark witches and wizards as far back as the 17th century'. From what I can gather from the trailer and info about the measurer, they didn't 'change' the purpose of US Aurors as much as them always having a different purpose, with there being no Aurors in North America pre-MACUSA, but Rowling used the term loosely for the sake of simplicity, and the 'Auror for hire' were sort of a wannabe thing, mirroring the work of British Aurors, which pre-dated the American ones.
"And I don’t know if it was a mistake but please don’t delete the rest of my reply. " I did? Oh, crap, sorry! Completely by accident! D: "And please try to sign all your messages so it doesn't get confusing to others about who wrote the reply - its an easy mistake sometimes but it keeps things tidy :)" Right... Sorry. ^^'
I kind of see what your trying to say. I think a note on the page to say the little things we do know about Aurors in America would be fine. But I don't think saying only Aurors in Britain deal with hunting Dark magic is okay because we don't know this. They may do the same thing in New Zealand or Australia for example. I may be able to think of a few other things they do in Britain too. Since Aurors in America appear to help keep dangerous things at bay such as Newt's briefcase of creatures and anything really which may ruin magical secrecy - they may also help deal with Dark magic and so on. They probably do. But its speculation similar to how saying they don't would be too. Since before MACUSA was formed we know of someone who did hunt Dark magic under the name of Auror in America. The new information from Jo on Pottermore for Ilvermorny tells us this. The trailer and some information from Jo tells us Aurors still work under this name in America by the 1920s. It says on the Fantastic Beasts wikipedia page how the character Percival Graves will be a "high-ranking Auror, confidante to the President of the American magical community. Set with the task of tracking down Newt." So he will be looking for Newt himself - not the creatures. So maybe MACUSA think he is a Dark wizard who done this on purpose or a wizard who needs to be hunted and dealt with because he has done something dangerous. So there is a lot of speculation at the moment. Nothing is very clear. So until we have the film and the book or any new information which tells us they work in a completely different way to Britain and don't deal with Dark magic, I wouldn't say they don't. I would put "In America, Aurors helped clean up the mess made by the creatures who escaped Newt's briefcase. Percival Graves was given the task of hunting Newt down because of this. They also help deal with anything which may ruin magical secrecy too" with a link to the Pottermore page and the wikipedia page and the trailer or video which shows them doing so. But don't worry about the deleting of the paragraph! It happens. When I edited a wikia a while ago for the first time, I messed up with a link and it messed up the entire page! Oops! :) And I don't mean to be annoying with the signing comments thing. Its no big deal - I'm a bit of a perfectionist and it makes things easier for others who may want to join us to know who said which reply! :S –- May32 (talk) 20:50, July 1, 2016 (UTC)
