Upon adding some additional information to this article[]
In reading Beedle the Bard, I really am of the opinion the "doesn't work" opinion was some biased comment. If you wanted to create zombies, I'd say that Necromancy works perfectly fine. Not everyone wants to resurrect the dead.
Undoubtedly no "Necromancer" type of Dark Wizards would exist, if their only aim was resurrecting the dead fully.
With that said, I added the very likely fact that Necromancy creates Inferi. As Dumbledore states in his notes to the Three Brothers, "Vile substitutions, of course, have been attempted by Dark Wizards, who have created Inferi." Personally, while it is a bit on the dark side, who else was excited Necromancy got named part of the HP verse? --Rookwood 15:43, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Doesn't work?[]
The article at present suggests that Dumbledore may have been lying when he said in his notes that necromancy doesn't work, and extends the definition to the spell used to create Inferi, Zombies, etc. However, the footnote that notes this doesn't work is not by Dumbledore, but is one of the explanatory notes placed in by the in-universe Rowling that the introduction notes are merely explanations of magical terms. Furthermore, we don't actually know for certain that Zombies are undead (though they are Living Dead).
Anyway, I think this article needs to be rewritten to only state the facts: that it's a Dark Art supposed to raise the dead, it doesn't really work, and that the method by which Inferi are created, by the virtue of clearly working, must be a separate, though obviously related, art. Curse[]
The Pottermore article for the Inferi (Writing by J. K. Rowling: "Inferi" at HarryPotter.com) says that they are reanimated with curses - does this mean that Necromancy should be sorted under "Curses", since no known exact spells for Necromancy are currently known?
