Do the pieces really get destroyed?[]

  • I've read the book and in it the the pieces just get dragged off the board not destroyed as in the film. Ztyran 17:50, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
    • I was just about to ask this, the books never mention breaking. Although the book does say that his new set was badly damaged because he wasn't very good--{{SUBST:User:Rod/autosig}} 22:34, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Isn't it "wizard" chess?[]

I've been looking for references to magical chess, as it were, to find out the correct terminology, and the specific references I found (Book 1, Chapter 12; Book 2, Chapter 11; Book 5, Chapters 24, 31, and 38) all use the phrase "wizard chess" rather than "wizard's chess." I've even tried to check with both the Scholastic and Bloomsbury editions, and it seems pretty consistent.

"Wizard" versus "wizard's" is a rather pedantic, really, but isn't that what this wiki is for?

Why is Wizard's Chess not known about by Muggles? I mean, it's just like Muggle chess, really... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Thomas246 (talkcontribs).

Because the main difference is that the pieces are enchanted in Wizard's Chess and wizards wouldn't let muggles see the enchanted pieces. -Shorty1982 22:01, September 16, 2011 (UTC)

Captured Chess Pieces[]

Would it be relevant to mention the pieces that were captured in the chess scene from the first Harry Potter film? Because I've made a list of all the pieces that were captured during the chess scene, and in the order they were captured.

  • Black Pawn
  • White Bishop
  • Black Queen
  • Black Knight
  • Black Pawn
  • Black Bishop
  • White Knight
  • Black Rook
  • Black Knight
  • White King

It's not always easy to tell the black pieces from the white ones due to the lack of light during that scene. But I'm pretty sure my list above is correct. -- C.Syde (talk | contribs) 06:38, December 2, 2014 (UTC)

I've gone ahead and revised my information one more time and then added it to the page. -- C.Syde (talk | contribs) 01:32, December 23, 2014 (UTC)

it says 'variant'. it's not a variant though?[]

it's the same game but pieces are voice activated and move. sounds like...magical automation than a variant Nic Bentulan (talk) 22:32, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

Please mention Jeremy Silman[]

Silman was uncredited in the film. Let's not let Silman be uncredited in the fandom.

> “Why isn’t your name in the credits?” (Sigh… I was hoping nobody would notice that. If you watch the credits role, you will see everyone from the hairdressers to the donut delivery boy given thanks for their part in the creation of the film. The omission of the “chess guy” shows just how far down the food chain we are!).

This is not relevant to the Wizard's Chess article. -  MrSiriusBlack  Talk  14:55, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Wizard's chess players: "Hana"[]

A red link called "Hana" is listed as a WC player, with the citation of "Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, "Help Dumbledore With Christmas" (2020/2021 version)".

I can't find a Hana in this video on the mission however.

Does anybody who has played HM know who this is? Castlemore (talk) 20:07, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

I do not know who this person is. Perhaps contact the editor who added this red link. RedWizard98 (talk) 20:25, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Name[]

What source does the capitalisation 'Wizard's Chess' come from? The books and Pottermore only refer to it as 'wizard chess'. -  MrSiriusBlack  Talk  18:09, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Bump. -  MrSiriusBlack  Talk  03:50, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
And UK Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone calls it "wizard chess". RedWizard98 (talk) 16:36, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Oh no, if this is another one of the cases where we've just taken the title for granted and thought that was the official name, when in reality it's not canon, I'm gonna cry. MalchonC (talk) 17:02, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
But since Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery likes to take things from the wiki all the time, is it possible for the name to have been canonised that way? Could somebody check? I'll do it tomorrow if no one else does. MalchonC (talk) 17:04, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
Gotcha, "Wizard's Chess" (see this video). Do you think it would be enough to keep the title? MalchonC (talk) 03:21, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
Sigh. I started this discussion 6 years too late. Hogwarts Mystery devs almost certainly got that from the wiki. Oh well, I suppose the non-conjecturalness allows lower canon to overpower higher canon in this case? -  MrSiriusBlack  Talk  12:34, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
The game also uses "wizard chess" or "wizard's chess" in earlier quests so it's not just "Wizard's Chess". Not sure if this changes anything. MalchonC (talk) 12:37, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
I couldn't find a source for "Wizard's Chess" in Tier One or Two canon. However, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened does use it in the Book with No Name. If it isn't used in higher canon, then I think the page should be renamed. There has to be a reason why Rowling has been referring to it as a common noun rather than giving it a title written like a proper noun. Pottermore has also been using Rowling's spelling, so I'm not sure where the games are getting "Wizard's Chess" (probably us lol). - Kates39 (talk)
