- "Tuck your shirt in, scruffy!"
- — A talking mirror to Harry Potter at The Burrow[src]
A talking mirror was an bewitched mirror which advised anybody who looked into it on how to improve their appearance.[2][3] Both the Weasley family[2] and the Leaky Cauldron[3] owned one.
History
- "You’re fighting a losing battle there, dear."
- — A talking mirror giving Harry Potter advice about how to comb his hair in the Leaky Cauldron[src]
Talking mirrors also seemed to have a personality and mind of their own, as the one in the Weasleys' seemed to be brusque and rude, ordering people rather than advising.[2] The one in the Leaky Cauldron, which, when Harry Potter tried flattening his hair, said "You're fighting a losing battle there, dear."[3]
Malodora Grymm, a hag who lived in the Middle Ages, regularly consulted a talking mirror to compliment her on her looks, which she had magically enhanced using a Beautification Potion.[1]
Talking mirrors may have been considered a type of enchanted mirror.
Behind the scenes
- The talking mirror is similar to the magic mirror used in the fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, which, like the one in the Harry Potter universe, comments on the user's appearance. On the other hand, talking mirrors are not all-seeing (an ability which is instead echoed in scrying mirrors).
