Tenebrus was a male Thestral who lived in the Forbidden Forest. Part of the Hogwarts Thestral Herd, he was the first Thestral to have been born in the Forest, presumably to the male and one of the five females initially acquired.

Biography

He was the personal favourite of Rubeus Hagrid, the Hogwarts gamekeeper and the Professor of Care of Magical Creatures. In late 1995, when Hagrid brought his fifth-year students into the forest and introduced them to Thestrals for his class, Tenebrus was the first to appear after he called for the herd.

Tenebrus survived the Second Wizarding War and presumably participated in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998 alongside the herd. In December 2011, Tenebrus gave a student a ride around the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch and the Great Lake after being brought to them by Hagrid.

Etymology

The name Tenebrus is presumably derived from the English adjective tenebrous, which means "dark", "gloomy", or "obscure". This word is itself derived from the Latin tenebrae, meaning "darkness".
