The Haunted Hogsmeade Shop was a shop in Hogsmeade in the late 19th century. It was owned by Cassandra Mason who kept a chest haunted by Fastidio, a poltergeist.[1]
History[]
Early history[]
In the late 19th century, Cassandra Mason owned the shop and had her house-elf, Penny helping to sell things. She started sending Penny out to find potential tenants. Once they agreed to Cassandra's deal, they received a key to a chest in the back room which led to a dungeon haunted by a poltergeist called Fastidio. They were driven to madness and were taken to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.[1]
A Hogwarts student[]
One day, Penny met a Hogwarts student and offered them the opportunity to buy the shop and be her new owner. They asked why Cassandra was selling it. Sworn to secrecy, Penny would only tell them so much. She lied that Cassandra was tired of running it, especially with the last few tenants failing to run a successful shop. Cassandra offered a deal the student. If they failed to run a successful shop, they had to sell it back to her at a discount. Upon agreeing to her terms, Penny took the student to the shop where she gave them the key to the chest. When they opened the chest, they found a ladder which led to Fastidio's dungeon which he called his "playground". They defeated Fastidio who persuaded them to sign a contract agreeing to let him out the chest and haunt the shop twice a month after 9pm.[1]
Aftermath[]
Penny was glad that the student escaped the chest in good health and apologised for lying. However, they both realised that the shop and the house-elf hadn't legally passed ownership to the student. They figured out Cassandra didn't really sell the shop or Penny to the student. She was trying to get money and lured her tenants to Fastidio. They contacted Officer Ruth Singer who arrested Cassandra. Officer Singer forced Cassandra to sign over the shop and the house-elf to the student.[1]
The student and Penny cleaned and repaired the shop, after which they freed the house-elf. Penny chose to keep working at the shop and encouraged the new owner to give it a new name. The student decided to close their shop at 9pm every evening so Fastidio could not bother shoppers.[1]
