"That is for the Hogwarts Diary to reveal to you. Each keeper sees only what they are meant to see."
— Librarian Irma Pince to Jacob's sibling after they managed to open the book[src]

The Hogwarts Diary was a benevolent magical book which chose certain students, called 'keepers', to look after it. It would only open for a keeper, and the contents of the Diary were unique to each keeper. The Diary was able to communicate with its keepers telepathically, something that would only be possible though Legilimency.[1]

History[]

"The Hogwarts Diary is a powerful window into the secrets of the castle."
— The words written on the pages of The Hogwarts Diary when Jacob's sibling opened it[src]

During the 1980s or 1990s, Jacob's sibling was chosen to be the keeper of The Hogwarts Diary following a long period of inactivity. The Diary presented Jacob's sibling with a series of mysteries to solve to help the inhabitants of Hogwarts.[1] The first mystery was to find The Spore Scrolls, a compilation of former Headmistress Professor Dame Phyllida Spore's extensive studies on magical fungi.[2] The second mystery was to figure out who was sending the Hogwarts Professors highly dangerous surprise Christmas gifts. It turned out to be Penny Haywood, who had accidentally made the presents dangerous.[3] The third mystery was related to a curse caused by an old love correspondence between two students, Gwendolyn and Muriel.[4] The fourth mystery was to catch two elusive Golden Snitches.[5] The fifth mystery was to figure out if the Hogwarts founders were responsible for causing damage to Hogwarts Castle.[6] The sixth mystery was to break the curse on Salazar Slytherin's compass and find the snakewood tree branch.[7] The seventh mystery was to discover the source of the cheating scandal at Hogwarts.[8] The eighth mystery was to locate and neutralise several cursed artefacts that had been stolen from various places around Hogwarts.[9]
