The Legendary Yeti of Hogwarts was a male yeti owned by Professor Silvanus Kettleburn during the 1980s.[1]
Biography[]
Many years before the 1984–1985 school year, Professor Kettleburn imported this yeti from Tibet so his Care of Magical Creatures class could study it. It stayed under the care of Professor Kettleburn for many years until it escaped. Professor Kettleburn looked for it but was unable to find the creature and so gave up. He believed it had gone into the Forbidden Forest or the mountains around Hogwarts Castle.
Over the years, reports of a "Legendary Yeti" started to emerge as the yeti travelled back to Hogwarts every year over the Christmas holidays. At some point, someone started collecting records of these sightings into a book, a copy of which was available in the Hogwarts Library for anyone to read. The reports of yeti sightings got so infamous that Rita Skeeter wrote an article for the Daily Prophet about the yeti, during which she claimed that the yeti hunted during the Christmas holidays as there were fewer witnesses and also that the yeti would eat students. This was contradicted by Professor Kettleburn, who claimed he had never heard of the yeti hurting a living thing, so much so that he considered the yeti to be a pacifist.
During the 1984–1985 school year, reports of yeti sightings around Hogwarts grew again. Jacob's sibling, whilst studying the history of the Hogwarts Christmas feast with Rowan Khanna, found the reports of yeti sightings and decided to try hunting for the yeti with Rowan. Whilst searching on the Training Grounds they found Fang, who had gone missing, and were going to return him to Hagrid when the yeti showed up. The yeti was agressive and attacked the group, but Jacob's sibling managed to duel with the yeti and defeat it, rendering it docile. It was eventually returned to the care of Professor Kettleburn.[1]
During the 1986–1987 school year, Cecil Lee went into the Forbidden Forest to investigate rumours of a werewolf. Jacob's sibling and Barnaby Lee went into the Forest to look for Cecil and, when they found him, they were attacked by a yeti, which Jacob's sibling believed could have been the same yeti they encountered two years previously. Jacob's sibling and Barnaby Lee fought off the yeti, which ran away into the Forest afterwards.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- It is possible that this yeti is the same as the individual in the Magical Creatures Reserve, which would explain the docility of the yeti on the reserve despite the creature's XXXX classification.
