The thornback was a large variation of spider that inhabited the forests and caves surrounding Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, including the Forbidden Forest, during the late 19th century.[1]
Description[]
Thornbacks were aggressive, spiny spiders that lived in dark forests and caves, notorious for their venomous bites and swarming behaviour. Their sharp legs and tough exoskeleton made them a dangerous threat, especially when they were defending their nests.[1]
Witches and wizards relied on fire-based spells like the Fire-Making Spell and the Blasting Curse, which proved highly effective against them, or levitation charms like Levitation Spell to disorient them.[1]

Reared up as it was about to strike its target with a powerful bite that broke through the Shield Charm. Could be caught off guard if ripped down with Descendo while it was rearing up, though simply dodging out of the way was a good defence as well. |
| Thornback Scurriour |

Particularly vulnerable to fire, fire attacks would ignite the spider, causing it to skitter about frantically before it died. If it took further damage before it died, it would explode. When these spiders begin to burrow, the Knockback Jinx would rip them out of the ground, dealing massive damage. |
| Thornback Ambusher | 
|
Attempted to keep as far away as possible before it shot webs to incapacitate its prey. While it was airborne, its unprotected belly was exposed, making it vulnerable to follow-up damage. |
| Thornback Hatchling | 
|
Dealt slight damage, but the damage could add up quickly when a swarm of them attacked relentlessly. It was easily defeated by almost any attack and would even die if struck by a simple Shield Charm. |
| Thornback Shooter | 
|
Preferred to attack from a distance by spitting acidic venom. Attacking it with a fire as it prepared to spit its venom would ignite the spider. |
