The Tibble-Tabble Charm (Tibble-tabble, manners grow… make them neat from head to toe!) was a charm that inverted a Poltergeist's normally chaotic and mischievous nature, making them one of order and discipline. The effects could be reversed with the Tibble-Tabble Counter Charm.[1]

Effect[]

The Tibble-Tabble Charm inverted the normally chaotic and mischievous behaviour of a Poltergeist, making them polite, orderly and disciplined. At first, the Poltergeist appeared to fight with themself, seemingly changing what they did, not what they wanted. The problem with the spell was that it went too far; the Poltergeist became an absurdly strict authoritarian who saw improper behaviour in the simplest things; for example, turning book pages too quickly was considered distracting to others. To that end, the Poltergeist made it a point to inform authority figures and recommend potential punishments. Many wizards considered the normally chaotic behaviour preferable.[1]

History[]

The charm was originally a silly rhyme that Ambrose Turner used whenever his daughter Lottie made a mess. It was his signal to stop playing and help clean up. He only ever waved a paintbrush when he used it, so it had no magical effect. Years later, Lottie, as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, told her friends about the Tibble-Tabble Charm, and because she used her wand instead of a paintbrush, the magic behind it occurred and accidentally hit Peeves the Poltergeist.[1]

Headmistress McGonagall believed it was the meaning Lottie and her father gave those words, repeated over the years, that allowed them to take on a will of their own. However, this was only a speculation on her part.[1]
