Tinsel is a type of decoration, typically used at Christmas, which consists of thin strips of shiny metal foil attached to a long piece of thread.[3]
History[]

In December 1994, the Fat Lady was seen straightening her new tinsel hair band as she admitted Harry Potter into Gryffindor Tower.[4]
In December 1995, when the Prefects were asked to assist in putting up Christmas decorations, Ron Weasley said "You try putting up tinsel when Peeves has got the other end and is trying to strangle you with it".[5] Also in December 1995, Healer Miriam Strout was seen wearing a tinsel wreath in her hair as she spoke to Gilderoy Lockhart in the Janus Thickey Ward in St Mungo's.[6]
In 1996, the banisters of the Hogwarts stairs were decorated with garlands of holly and tinsel.[7] The Burrow had a christmas tree decorated with tinsel for Christmas that year as well.[2]
