- Barty Crouch Senior: "Igor Karkaroff. You have been brought from Azkaban to present evidence to the Ministry of Magic. You have given us to understand that you have important information for us."
- Igor Karkaroff: "I have, sir. I wish to be of use to the Ministry. I wish to help. I — I know that the Ministry is trying to — to round up the last of the Dark Lord's supporters. I am eager to assist in any way I can...."
- — The beginning of Karkaroff's trial[src]
The trial of Igor Karkaroff occurred before the Council of Magical Law at some point after Lord Voldemort's first downfall.[2]
History[]
Igor Karkaroff was brought from Azkaban to provide names of other supporters of Lord Voldemort in the hope of reducing his sentence. He was on trial for helping torture numerous Muggles and opponents of the Dark Lord. After being brought into the courtroom by two Dementors, Karkaroff was magically chained to a chair. He expressed deep remorse for being involved with the Death Eaters (something Alastor Moody doubted) and presented the names of several Death Eaters he claimed to be among those most valued by Voldemort, although he claimed that because of the anonymity that the Dark Lord operated under, none of the Death Eaters were made aware of the identities of each and every one of their cohorts.
He mentioned Antonin Dolohov, Evan Rosier, Mulciber, Travers, Augustus Rookwood, and Severus Snape. Bartemius Crouch Senior, who preside over the trail announced that Dolohov was captured, and Evan Rosier was killed, around the same time as Karakroff's capture in the year before the fall of Voldemort.[4] Travers and Mulciber had been captured and Snape was exonerated, but Crouch appeared interested in Rookwood, who worked in the Department of Mysteries.[2] It is presumed that Karkaroff betrayed more of his comrades and was eventually released.
An addendum to Karkaroff's Trial Record was created after his appearance.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, this was the only trial seen as Ludo Bagman, Rabastan Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange and Bellatrix Lestrange were omitted from the film and Barty Crouch Jnr was in the stands and was not among any accused.

- ↑ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 8 (The Hearing) - "[Harry] had not only seen it before, he had been here before. This was the place he had visited inside Dumbledore's Pensieve, the place where he had watched the Lestranges sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban." The trials of Igor Karkaroff and the Lestranges took place in the same courtroom.

- ↑ The trial would have had to have been held sometime after the fall of Lord Voldemort, but couldn't have happened before 1 May 1982, since Moody says it took him six months to track Karkaroff down.
- ↑ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 27 (The Centaur and the Sneak) - "Rosier and Wilkes — they were both killed by Aurors the year before Voldemort fell."; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 30 (Grawp) - "'Rosier is dead,' said Crouch. 'He was caught shortly after you were too. He preferred to fight rather than come quietly and was killed in the struggle.'" "'We have already apprehended Dolohov,' said Crouch. 'He was caught shortly after yourself.'" Karakaroff and Dolohov are captured about the same time as Rosier was killed the year before Voldemort fell.
