The Trials of Merlin were a set of challenges established by the legendary medieval wizard Merlin. They were scattered throughout the Scottish Highlands, and involved placing mallowsweet at the centre and using various spells to solve puzzles.[1]

History[]

During the 1890–1891 school year, after Nora Treadwell and a student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were able to defeat some Ashwinders near Lower Hogsfield, Treadwell showed her research on the Merlin Trials to the student, who was able to help her solve one of the puzzles.

Later that school year, the student searched for the other trials in the Highlands and solved all of them.

Types of trials[]

There were various types of Merlin Trials to be found after placing mallowsweet at the centre.

  • Lighting torches: This trial could be solved using either the Fire-Making Spell or the Blasting Curse to light the torches from a distance in order of tallest to shortest. Once they were lit, they would start sinking into the ground, and if one of them reached the bottom before they were all lit, the solver would have to start again.
  • Destroying orbs: This trial's objective was to destroy the orbs on the top of pillars around the trial area using the Summoning Charm. The Revelio Charm could help the solver find the orbs more easily, as there were usually quite a few that would need to be found and destroyed to complete the trial.
  • Standing stones: For this trial, solvers had to climb onto one of the nearby standing stones and jump onto the next one until they reached the end and completed the trial.
  • Symbol cubes: This trial required the solver to use the Knockback Jinx on the cubes resting on pillars around the trial area. These cubes had symbols on them that needed to line up with the plinth they were resting on. The cubes also had arrows on some of the faces to help one figure out which direction they should line up in.
  • Lighting crystals: This trial could be easily recognised by the presence of hollow cubes with crystals inside and luminescent moths in the trial area. Solvers needed the Wand-Lighting Charm to guide the moths to the cubes, which would light the crystals inside the cubes. Once all the cubes had been lit, the trial would be complete.
  • Stone spheres: One could spot this trial by the presence of plates with spherical openings on the ground within the challenge area. To solve the trial, piles of five small stone balls had to be transferred into the nearby plates using the Summoning Charm. When all the plates' holes had been filled, the trial would be completed.
  • Destroying stones: This trial required the solver to use the Blasting Curse to blow up the cracked, green-tinted rocks found around the trial area.
  • Repairing statues: When this trial began, a number of statues around the area would collapse. To complete the trial, one needed to use the Mending Charm to fix them.
  • Goal shift: To complete this trial, solvers needed to locate the large ball and use spells to get it into the nearby bowl-shaped goal set in the ground.
