This individual (fl. 19th century) was a wizard from Cornwall who was known for attempting to cross-breed various creatures and was tried at the Wizengamot for trying to breed Basilisks.[1][2]

Biography[]

In the 1890s, a routine inspection of his five chicken coops revealed toad infestations. He was suspected of trying to breed Basilisks, a practise that was outlawed by the British Ministry of Magic. He was taken into custody and put on trial in the Wizengamot where he pleaded a defence of total ignorance, that he had no idea how Basilisks were made, claimed that the toads were drawn to his chicken coops and called it a "silly mistake".[1]

The members of the Wizengamot were largely sceptical of his defence. Belinda Brown of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures was the only one who believed him. She thought he was a "moonmind" who would have tried to move the toads before the inspection if he thought he would get into trouble.[1]

The Cornish wizard later allegedly bred a chicken with a Common Welsh Green dragon to create a supposed hybrid nicknamed the "Dricken". Although technically legal at the time, the Ministry started to look into confirming the existence of the creature and some of the wizard's other rumoured cross-breeds, such as a Billywig crossed with a scallop, a goat crossed with a Mooncalf, and a Niffler crossed with a beetle, in order to ensure that none of them caused any harm to the wizarding or Muggle communities nearby if they did exist. Belinda Brown commented on the rumour by claiming that the Ministry's concerns would be greater if the supposed "Dricken" was a dragon-sized chicken rather than a chicken-sized dragon.[1]

The Dricken was eventually located and captured in the town of Newquay. Belinda Brown commented that the Ministry had ensured the safety of both the creature and the citizens of Newquay and was looking into the rumours of the Dricken's origin through experimental breeding, with Belinda asserting that such experimental breeding should be made illegal. The Cornish wizard would later only comment that the "little bird" shouldn't be "locked up in London" just because it could breathe fire.[2]
