"Rumoured" by whom? Anyone can invent a rumour, but if it isn't in any canon source, it doesn't belong here. This is an encyclopaedia, not a dumping ground for wild speculation. Besides, if Crookshanks is indeed the Potters' cat, he would be at least 14-15 when Hermione got him, which is fairly old for a cat. — evilquoll (talk) 01:37, October 31, 2017 (UTC)

Albus Dumbledore

Hey,do you think Albus Dumbledore deserves to have Defense Against The Dark Arts in His Magical Skills and Abillities? After all he did defeat The Most powerful Dark Wizards ever.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Anthony William (talkcontribs) 15:59, October 21, 2017 (UTC).

Complaint

Hey,

Just wanted to know if cursing was allowed on this Wikia. Because a friend named HarryPotterRules1 recently cursed me over Lucius Malfoy's death info. I would greatly appreciate it if you inform him that adding assumptions or personal point of view on any character or event related to any literary creation violates the copyright law. My friend believes that Lucius Malfoy was actually declared dead by the author herself owing to some specific valuable words of Draco in "Cursed child". It would be the world to me if you kindly make him understand that mentioning of a person in past tense, Doesn't actually make him Dead.

Hope you are having a nice day!

Cheers!

Complaint 2

Hello, I would like to register a complaint, hopefully leading to a warning or block for this userHere, you can see a generally poorly written edit and speculation; specifically the claim that he destroyed the "Shield of Hogwarts" with "Lightning Curse". He merely repeated what was already said in the duelling section, albeit in lower quality writing. Over all his edit has typos and speculation.

Here: He claimed Albus Dumble possessed "unparalled" levels of magical power. In the wandless magic section his basically praised his abilities and over exaggerated them. The part about "thousands of sleeping bags" was a lie, it was in fact hundreds. Several users have reverted his poor edits that he hasn't sought help to improve, which you can here: Dumbledore?action=history link by CTRL+ F and typing Anthony William.

I hope that you can put a stop to this before the damage becomes irreparable.

Pensieve Info

I'm not sure what the issue is with the information I included on the Pensieve's page. If you'll check the Wikipedia page for baptismal fonts, you'll see the information is correct. Unless you're thinking like an old-fashioned school teacher, Wikipedia's information is frequently checked and upkept by admins like yourself to make sure information is correct and sourced. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Garre9988 (talkcontribs) 03:38, December 21, 2017 (UTC).

On Wikipedia, as here, the admins can't be everywhere or catch everything the instant it is posted. Hence Wikipedia is no more reliable than any other open wiki. Remember the "Ronnie Haslehurst co-composed Reach" hoax which not only ran for several days before being caught, but resulted in several falsified obituaries being published? — evilquoll (talk) 10:40, December 29, 2017 (UTC)

Werewolf Registry

Hi. I just signed up to this site, so I'm not really sure how to use it yet. :) But I removed Bill Weasley from the list of known werewolves, because in canon he isn't one, as Fenrir was in human form when he attacked him. He isn't a "partial" werewolf as there's no such thing. :D I hope it was okay that I did so.

Magical trunk

Hi, I have a question that I haven't been able to find the answer to. How much does a magical trunk cost? is it more than the wand? The wand (According to first book values) costs 700 gbp or 7 galleons. How much does that make a trunk in comparison? Also, I am writing a fan story where the Galleon is equal to 100 gbp so I'll need to value according to this system. Considering that trunks are generally long lasting and some believe they can be enchanted for more space and blood locks and the likes I'm sure they are expensive.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Yukimori-Cherokee (talkcontribs) 04:01, May 19, 2018 (UTC).

List of the Missing

Hey, I don't know if there was a submit question area or anything, and I couldn't find the list on the wiki, but is there by any chance a list floating around, of every witch or wizard who "went missing" before the start of the second Wizarding war? If not that's ok, I don't really have much expertise in making pages on a wiki, but the question came up when I read the profile of Amelia Bones. Thanks for the wiki, it's a cool pocket guide to have on hand when watching the movies.

Protection level?

Hi there! It's kind of late for me (2AM-ish), so I apologize in advance if this is info I can find on my own (I feel like it is;) was wondering what the protection level for Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is? And if it's not already set on "Block new and unregistered users," was wondering if you can consider changing it to that?

I think previously there have in fact been great contributions made by new users, but just now, a user who has never edited on this wiki, has been, no doubt NOT INTENTIONALLY but unfortunately, messing around the structure of the said article. After undoing those edits, I then found them inserting relatively redundant statement (it's not wrong info, just considerably irrelevant) to the section that's already growing pretty large.

It's a really small thing, but with this game actually still being updated as of now, the article is a more high traffic page; I just think perhaps a "bar" ATM to restrict the amount of editors would benefit the page to be less likely to be accidentally altered negatively by people who are new to editing.

If it comes out arrogant, I apologize for that as well. Still working on my writing skills. Thanks for reading! --Sammm✦✧(talk) 09:14, May 30, 2018 (UTC)

Urgent help

Hi there! Thanks for the previous help on the weird things happening while uploading images. Terribly sorry to bother you again; the full account of the situation (in my point of view) is submitted at Harry Potter Wiki:Requests for administrator attention#Infobox image preference, but I'm writing to you because I have an update on the situation. Previously the user in question didn't bother to leave any reason as to why they were undoing edits, now they left one: "A lot of pages have a full body photo in the infobox."

I have no doubt there ARE SOME, but I really want to know if the statement is enough to justify the action, given NONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS has a full body photo! I do not understand why, just because that, yes, some articles are like that, when CLEARLY NONE OF THE MAJOR ONES ARE, it is then okay to use this as a reason to change all the images in the infoboxes of characters from Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.

Like I stated in the requests, this caused the inbox to be long, not focused on the characters facial appearances, while also messing up with article preview. I'm primarily seeing the CROTCH of those characters that have their images swapped when their articles appeared at the bottom on the site.

Please help me understand why it is acceptable and why it is preferred to seeing the CROTCH of those characters instead of their FACES in article previews. --Sammm✦✧(talk) 00:56, June 5, 2018 (UTC)

Wiki Cleanup

Hello there. Ginny

Hi there! I think the change was done due to the following statement on HPW:POLICY#Naming of articles:

An article's title should contain the last name used throughout the Harry Potter series, regardless of marriage.
Though perhaps interpreted differently, as the "latest used name" throughout the Harry Potter series. (Was the sentence meant to mean "the surname used throughout the Harry Potter series"? If so, perhaps rephrasing it would be ideal to avoid reading "last" and "name" as separate words.) Anyways, the reason of the change seemed plausible, because in Quidditch Through the Ages (2018 audio edition), Ginny is officially referred to as Ginny Potter, which, I can see fit the bill if going with "the latest used name". I'm not the one who made it, but I can see it go both ways, just figured I'd chip in. =D --Sammm✦✧(talk) 01:42, November 15, 2018 (UTC)

I know, which was why after I saw the move, I went to write User talk:Ironyak1#Potential policies updates?= (sorry about the extra "="; that was a typo, just haven't got around to removing it.) to inform that the example in the policy is the opposite; I think even at the time I've been reading it as "latest used name" instead of "the surname used", so thanks for the modification =D --Sammm✦✧(talk) 02:45, November 15, 2018 (UTC)

Hey - Sorry, I really did think that the long discussion we had on married naming conventions set new precedent and that the Policy was just not up to date (like a few others). I'll dig up the conversation and we can revisit the policy update another time - not a critical issue with the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald floodgates opening. Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 06:24, November 15, 2018 (UTC)

If it means anything, there's Forum:Revisting policy on the naming of articles; though after reading it, I failed to understand if there's a conclusion on the matter. D; --Sammm✦✧(talk) 06:41, November 15, 2018 (UTC)

Wordmark and Background

Hello! I'm just letting you know that because of the release of Crimes of Grindelwald I have taken it upon myself to update the site's wordmark and background. This was mainly because the old wordmark had the block of white around the actual logo rather than the transparency that would have allowed it to blend in with the header color. I used the current font style for Crimes of Grindelwald to tie in with the film, and also used promotional material to update the background which was still using images from Fantastic Beasts. I have also updated the main page slider with more relevant articles for the new film.

Usually I look for input when making changes like this that affect the way the site looks in a significant way, but I felt that the update was needed due to the release of the new movie so I apologise if the change is sudden or jarring. In hindsight I should I have done this earlier and gotten input from the administration team so if you feel any changes need to be made, or the changes reverted, then please let me know. Hopefully though, the design rework is acceptable. Once the film is over, I will endeavour to create a new permanent wordmark that looks better in the header space. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 14:00, November 19, 2018 (UTC)

Categorisation of Wizards

Hello there, I saw you were the one who left me a very friendly response on my message wall, as you can see I'm keen on editing articles relating to The Crimes of Grindelwald. I was just wondering how do recommend that articles on wizards/witches be categorised? Currently, the wizard category encompasses all wizards in the franchise, but I casually noticed, many witches and wizards are not in this category. I see previous discussions have debated on the large size of this category, but no universal rule seems to be established on how to categorise, or sub-categorise wizards? I was thinking perhaps "wizards" for general wizards and then "dark wizards" for explicitly dark ones. What would you suggest? RedWizard98 (talk) 08:11, November 20, 2018 (UTC)

HPW namespace and Wiki Projects

Hi there! Happy (belated?) holidays! Or at least, Happy New Year! xD Hope all is well!

I chose to contact you out of all the recently active Admins, because it seems like you participated more in Harry Potter Wiki:Harry Potter Wiki Projects; plus, I have been asking Seth and Ironyak1 questions almost on regular basis, so I figured it'd be nice to balance out the workload a bit lol. xP

So um, my personal idiosyncrasy is that I couldn't stand duplicated images. There's no real logic behind the dislike, the dupes aren't hurting anyone per se, but I'd still like them to be gone. lol After becoming a Content Moderator, I set out to do why I applied for the said User Right; however, I feel like there's a missing step somewhere. I mean, I think it's pretty much a given to not upload duplicated images, just as it is for not creating multiple articles about the same subject under different article titles. That being said, to search for whether or not there's already an existing article (as suggested in the probably less-seen-nowadays message via {{Create article}}), is a whole lot easier than verifying whether or not an image has already been uploaded onto HPW.

As stated when I applied for the User Right, sans the obvious vandalism, I don't personally think most people would intentionally upload duplicates as separate files, but it just isn't easy to check what's on the wiki when the number of files here is just so massive. HPW:IMAGE and MediaWiki:Uploadtext (indirectly; on Special:Upload) asks Users to not upload dupes, without guidance on how to avoid doing so. Last year, I had a convo with a non-newbie Editor, as in, they've definitely been around for a couple of years, and reading between the lines, it rather looked like they were unaware of the concept, function, and existence of the entire "file" namespace, and in that situation, I have no idea how they even searched for images up till that point, because it'd be highly unlikely for them to know to look through Category:Images, which, would have sped up the search process, as opposed to hoping a desired image will eventually show up during search with a keyword hit.

On small wikis, it isn't unreasonable to simply ask Users to check what's uploaded and what's not, but it's frankly undoable on HPW. I think, old Users may be so ingrained with certain basic knowledge, that they may forget how, at the beginning, new Users are closed to literally knowing nothing about the inner-workings of a wiki. In short, I'm saying, yes, it is handheld and spoon-fed, but I think Harry Potter Wiki:Image policy will benefit from having additional instructions, like nicely suggesting people to browse through Category:Images. Link-dropping Special:MostLinkedFiles and Special:UnusedFiles may also be helpful to some extent.

I'm not unrealistic, there's no quick way to check that I know of, unless it really is a carbon-copy file; that's the only time Wikia will prevent Users from uploading the literal dupe (which also isn't full-proofed, since cases of 100% identical files can still be found on HPW), but I think the current policy just isn't welcoming enough in a helpful sense. (Okay, that last sentence probably makes less sense than what I'm trying to convey.) I'm saying, it gives me a passive feel of "dupes = lost cause, no way around it", rather than actively trying to help people prevent uploading dupes.

So the first sum up of this message is asking if HPW:IMAGE can be updated; I'm not eloquent, and am obvious not an Admin, so I'm sharing my observations and what might help. At the end of the day, perhaps new Users don't bother with reading all the policy pages, but if asked, HPW at least can't be faulted for not having already provided all the useful and relevant links.

Topic 2. At the moment, to make my life easier, I'm documenting my dupe findings at User blog:Sammm鯊/Duplicate images, so that I have records of what dupes existed and for me to then delete them in batches. As mentioned in the blogpost, once dupes are sorted out and taken care of, I'd relocate them to a different section for display and referential purpose. That's what I hope to get an opinion on. I think it's safe to say, the higher the number of dupes a file has, the more "popular" the said file is, in the sense of more people felt the need to upload it, without knowing a file of the same content already existed.

Obviously, when it happens, it happens; there's no real reason behind the action, short of people wanting that file on the wiki, so yes, I understand that, the current display of what previously have dupes, may hold little relevance to dupes to come, but it doesn't mean the data have absolute no use. To be clear, I am not saying "because they have dupes before, they are more likely to have dupes again", that, is not the logic I'm going with. I'm being straightforward as in "they have dupes before, please don't upload any more of those and just use the files you see"; if that makes any sense.

Yes, I understand it is tedious work, and I'm as likely to go through all the past deleted files just to show the true number of total dupes, as the next person would be willing to spend time on doing so, but I felt that, hey, I'm already documenting in order to not have déjà vu and not solely counting on my obviously unreliable memory; yes, I could simply remove my documentation after the completion of batch deletes, but, why not just make use of the documentation? It's a process I'll go through anyways, so I just figured there's also no reason of scrapping it clean as if closed to 100 hundred files hadn't been deleted.

Oh, in case it wasn't obvious, I have decided to keep the documentation some might view as unnecessary; the question I have is where to keep them. No, I wouldn't say viewing them is a must, but I think, it's something that could be pointed towards for new Users, like, "not saying you'll definitely find what you are looking for here, but you can check out some of the popular uploads on this wiki" etc. For that use though, I just don't think keeping them on my blogpost is the best way to go. My conclusion is, the HPW namespace seems most ideal, but I feel like it's not something I should start without discussion.

Do you think the idea is acceptable?

That's mostly it for now. No, I have not brought up any relevance to the earlier mentioning of the Harry Potter Wiki:Harry Potter Wiki Projects, that's because in the end, the two (super long) questions I asked are my priorities, and I feel bad for already writing so much lol.

They are't urgently in need of answer by any means, I'll be happy to hear back from you anytime before 2020. lol Just figured I'll get it out of the way so the idea isn't taking up too much of my brain space. I'm serious when I say my memory sucks.

Hope I won't be taking too much of your time, and thanks for reading and surviving my post! xD --Sammm✦✧(talk) 07:22, January 6, 2019 (UTC)

Hey there! Still no pressure about giving a reply! Was serious about the above not exactly being urgent; however, I felt silly that in the attempt of keeping the above to the point, I missed broaching the subject that is in fact kind of rather time sensitive... Not asking you to view and comment on everything on the page in one go, but if possible, can you view Forum:Treatment for similar images and see if you have any preferences? You can check the edit history to know it definitely didn't start out as huge as it currently is; unfortunately, if no one chips in, it'll just accumulate more and making going through all of them more daunting on the long run. Really hoping to archive 5 of the topics if only people actually come in to vote for the same thing, but it's rather at a standstill when only another user shared their thoughts. Would really appreciate it if receiving more feedback, thanks! --Sammm✦✧(talk) 05:48, January 29, 2019 (UTC)

Also his wand was walnut with phoenix feather core. but i have yet to see any pictures or description as to what it looked like which is a shame as theres not really much said about him.Bappibear (talk) 16:20, February 1, 2019 (UTC)

Clean up?

This is literally one of the most popular fandoms ever, but can we do some cleanup? I mean, for example, putting all minor or unnamed characters in one big page. Or objects in one big page. It doesn't make sense to have them have individual pages if they aren't significant enough. Also, I noticed at the top the "Harry Potter" tab isn't there. Possible vandalism, request blocking

Hi, I noticed user "Mihahrubfgjgnwbafr" has repeatedly changed the death dates to something inane. I suspect vandalism, but I'm surprised his account hasn't been blocked yet. Xkcd1BeretGuy (talk) 14:54, February 6, 2019 (UTC)

Deletion

Wait... are non-administrators allowed to post deletion templates if they see an article that maybe should be deleted?! --SWLover2 (talk) 22:19, February 16, 2019 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware, yes, anyone can add a delete template if they think an article is worthy of such action, and the issue can be debated here. Non-admins just can't actually delete the page. --Cubs Fan (Talk to me) 22:25, February 16, 2019 (UTC)

Survey

Hey there Cubs Fan2007! As I am in the Community Council, I am interested in gathering feedback on what makes Fandom so special as a company.  You are being contacted today with some survey questions on what you think makes Fandom a great place. This is research for a blog I am making on the Community Central Wiki.  Here they are:

1. How do you view Fandom as a company? Do you feel that they support you enough as an administrator?

2. What kind of technical updates would you like to see in the future? What features would make your job easier?

3. What feedback do you have on the recent Discussions updates? Do you think they were helpful, not worth the time?

Thank you for taking time to answer these questions!

Cheers, Harrypotterexpert101 Council-icon-FANDOM.svg (talk) 21:35, February 24, 2019 (UTC)

How to find new fantasy franchises to get into

Hello Cubs Fan2007,

I am currently doing a study on the challenges fantasy fans face in finding the next fantasy franchise they would like to get into and where to get access to that content.

Given your role as an admin for the Harry Potter wiki, I would be keen to interview you to get your thought on this. What would be the best way to do this and would you have some availability to connect on this over the coming weeks?

Best,

Hermione Granger's article

What on earth happened to the 'contents' section on her page? It ends with 'magical abilities and skills', but the rest of the article is still there nonetheless. --SWLover2 (talk) 21:18, May 12, 2019 (UTC)

Branching off Wizards Unite

Hi,

Name is Rel, I work with Fandom from the Gaming CTM side of things and we help expand wikis with content.

In-regards to the video game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Fandom would like Wizards Unite characters to be branched off from the overall Meta page from characters. For example creating characters articles like https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Harry_Potter:_Wizards_Unite/Harry_Potter, instead of linking https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Harry_Potter which provides 0 information about the game (it also isn't great for SEO).

We can have the Meta page of Harry Potter linked somewhere in the article and along with other characters articles that get created so that if people do want to read more about the lore, they can.

Let me know if this is something that the CTM team can do for your wiki.

Update: Disregard this haha. My boss sent your main Admin a message, he'll talk to you guys tomorrow. o7

the vandal you just warned.

I suggest you just block them. Its a long term abuser, at least the form of vandalism, and the type stretches back at least 10 years. MechQueste 03:35, August 24, 2019 (UTC)

Image request

Hello, I was wondering if you could remove the protection from this image file which depicts the Burrow (provided below), something you did four years ago to prevent it being vandalised; the only problem being, in contains no file information; no description, source, license or categories, which all images must have. I personally enjoy ordering images across the wiki, as I hate it when images are uploaded incorrectly, given unidentifiable titles and no information provided. Thanks. - RedWizard98 (talk) 16:45, October 6, 2019 (UTC)
