Wikia features

Say, Robert, if you have a moment, could you take a look at this here? I've started a thread regarding the idea of enabling additional features here, and I'd like to get opinions. ProfessorTofty (talk) 15:33, October 20, 2012 (UTC)

Re: Vacancy

I wasn't aware that she removed the link to the older wiki. At this point, I think a warning is fair; a block is in order if any such activity continues. ProfessorTofty (talk) 15:41, October 20, 2012 (UTC)

Re: Main page vandalism

For that sort of petty vandalism, I usually prefer to give a warning first, which I have just done. If the behaviour continues, I'll probably block for about a month, unless something worse is done, in which case it would be for longer. ProfessorTofty (talk) 14:02, October 23, 2012 (UTC)

Re: Recent changes markup

Fixed. This is something that has to be enabled manually in the CSS. If you're still not seeing it, try refreshing your browser while holding down the shift or control key. ProfessorTofty (talk) 01:50, October 24, 2012 (UTC)

Re: New Casual Vacancy Wiki

I don't know what you're seeing on your end, but the color scheme I'm seeing on my end - not good. The black on gray is barely readable and the background graphic is distracting. ... And, I see you just changed it. Well, the white on black is a bit better, but it's still not ideal. If you like I can try to suggest some more complementary colors and maybe get a better background image. ProfessorTofty (talk) 02:34, October 27, 2012 (UTC)

I've now amended the main page with a "help wanted" section and started a corresponding thread on its talk page. -- RobertATfm (talk) 03:13, October 27, 2012 (UTC)
It seems to be working fine on the page for "Umbrella." As for it not working on the Template page itself, don't worry about it. That always happens at first, it usually sorts itself out on its own after a little while. But if by some chance it doesn't, it doesn't really matter so long as it's doing what it's supposed to do on pages. ProfessorTofty (talk) 07:42, October 27, 2012 (UTC)

Rollback rights

Hi, I saw your post on ProfessorTofty's talk page. It is this what you search.  Harry granger   Talk   contribs 11:45, October 31, 2012 (UTC)

Harry granger is correct. You may also want to leave a message on the talk page of Grunny, as only a bureaucrat can grant rollback. Regarding the colour scheme, correct, but it's just for today, for Hallowe'en. If you think it should be more permanent, though, I recommend suggesting it on the forums. ProfessorTofty (talk) 11:56, October 31, 2012 (UTC)

I'll let your correction stand, but I think that you'll find that Firefox flags neither as an error. Also, this. ProfessorTofty (talk) 13:10, November 14, 2012 (UTC)

I think I remember reading it a couple of months ago, hence my surprise when the Professor said it was innapropriate. However, I'd forgotten until you'd brought it up again, so sorry about that misunderstanding. --Hunnie Bunn (talk) 18:38, December 30, 2012 (UTC)

Re: Possible vandal edit

For the record-- never take the name being removed from the infobox field as a sign of possible vandalism. That's not vandalism-- that's a recurring bug that happens here-- any edit made to an infobox using the visual editor will cause the name field to be zapped. I'll have a look at the other concern, though. ProfessorTofty (talk) 23:01, March 22, 2013 (UTC)

I see, it's like the other known bugs from using the visual editor (duplication of categories, insertion of images/infoboxes into the middle of words). And Wikia recommends that everyone use that rubbish? I think that if the source editor is ever removed, I'll stop being a Wikia editor as the visual editor is far too unreliable. — RobertATfm (talk) 23:17, March 22, 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the link. I've taken a look around and it seems pretty good. If I knew anything about Cormoran Strike, I would help out there, but I don't think I would be able to provide that much assistance. --Hunnie Bunn (talk) 15:17, July 16, 2013 (UTC)

Lars Berteig Andersen edits

I saw after I saved my edits that you had undone the edit by a possible vandal. Don't take it as a sign of deleting your edit, as I may have been editing at the same time as you undid. Not meant to ruin your edits. --DCLM (talk) 14:50, July 19, 2013 (UTC)

Just letting you know. :) And I agreed with you on same page. --DCLM (talk) 15:27, July 19, 2013 (UTC)

User page policy on ProfessorTofty's talk page

Hi, I have read your question and I think it is that what you search: Harry Potter Wiki:User Policy#Editing. It belongs to user talk page editing.  Harry granger   Talk   contribs 11:29, July 20, 2013 (UTC)

RE: New (ab)user?

VSTF checked into the matter, and found a number of accounts being used by that vandal. They've been disabled globally by Wikia. - Nick O'Demus 00:10, July 27, 2013 (UTC)

Megaman wiki

On this, at least, J-7 is right - there's no record of his and KillerBird's accounts having ever been blocked there. MinorStoop 06:38, May 6, 2014 (UTC) P.S. They both are, though, on Digimon. MinorStoop 06:43, May 6, 2014 (UTC)

Although the block log doesn't show this because expired blocks don't show, even on a search (except to admins? — presumably this is a security measure), the evidence of a previous block is on the talk pages of J7 and of the admin to whom he complained about it. — RobertATfm (talk) 10:28, May 6, 2014 (UTC)
It's just a matter of knowing where to look, I believe. I don't know whether you're aware of Wikia's logs - First and second log at megaman are empty. First and second log at Digimon are longish. MinorStoop 15:38, May 6, 2014 (UTC)
On a second reading of your answer, you probably _are_ aware of this feature. If so, I've got no idea what this means. MinorStoop 17:05, May 6, 2014 (UTC)

Re: Jdogno7 again

All right, I think I got everything, if you want to double check. If he tries anything else, then I'll block him. Despite stretching good faith, since blocks are meant to be preventative, I only want to use it as a last resort. --Cubs Fan (Talk to me) 13:33, June 16, 2014 (UTC)

Should you want to get all of someone's miseditings, you can check an user's contributions. It can be a pisser, though, when they're many, or someone else has undone some of them. MinorStoop 20:27, June 16, 2014 (UTC)
That indeed is what I usually do. — RobertATfm (talk) 21:02, June 16, 2014 (UTC)
Ouch, should have kept my mouth shut. Fact is, I don't use the follow feature too much. MinorStoop 21:24, June 16, 2014 (UTC)

I don't think we can swear on this wiki either; I just think I got away with it, this once. MinorStoop 11:13, June 28, 2014 (UTC)

Tennis game

I understand your concern, and up to a point I share it. But I'd still be grateful if other parties are not scolded on my talk page - notice goes out to me, and not to them. Fair's fair, I think.

Or we might petition to have message walls set up on this wiki, instead of talk pages - people can opt out of threads they aren't interested in. MinorStoop

I don't like the idea of message walls; we had them on the World of Cars Wiki (on which I was a bureaucrat for a few months, just long enough to sort out the horrible mess it was in, before handing it over to the other admins), and found that message walls are much harder to police (and don't allow replies to replies, only to the original post in a thread), hence switched to talk pages. (One poster was posting literally dozens of inane comments to one message wall, swamping it and making useful comments difficult to find; I suspect he was trying a buffer overflow crack. Switching to the talk page system was the only feasible way of getting rid of all that rubbish.) — RobertATfm (talk) 22:38, July 10, 2014 (UTC)

Re: TheUnlimitedFanPage

Yeah, I have. And maybe I'm not seeing what you are, but I can't tell that she's technically doing anything wrong. She's not spamming links to a fan site, excessively editing her userpage, vandalizing any articles or otherwise editing in bad faith, or creating/inserting fanon. So I'm not quite sure how to proceed; if you could clarify the problem, it would help immensely. --Cubs Fan (Talk to me) 18:57, August 19, 2014 (UTC)

18.9% of her edits (currently) are to her own userpage, and that isn't excessive? That's not what the policy says. Or am I misinterpreting the policy, and userpage edits are only excessive if they amount to exactly 15% of the total; more than that is OK? — RobertATfm (talk) 11:31, August 20, 2014 (UTC)
Nope, it says in black and white that 'excessive' is defined as more than 15%. It might just be me; I guess I'm more liberal than maybe I should be. I'll leave a message for her. --Cubs Fan (Talk to me) 12:50, August 20, 2014 (UTC)

If I may add my 2 pennies, an user such as TUFP, who chooses to embellish her/his own userpage is innocuous and can be left to his/her own devices with no detriment to the wiki. The particular policy limiting the userpage contribution of an editor to 15% of her/his total output should be meant more as an encouragement than as a positive rule, I believe, and not to be taken overtly seriously. MinorStoop 14:00, August 20, 2014 (UTC)

Undoing an edit - mirror

Say, Robert, who are you addressing; Shopa-whatever or me? This is, btw, one of the reasons why I do dislike people using _my_ talk page to discuss _their_ latest thread. If it's alphabet soup, you should ask him/her and I doubt s/he will answer, given those contributions of her/him I could see. If it's me, I found the previous edit borderline vandalism, have no idea how willful. MinorStoop 19:33, August 26, 2014 (UTC)

I thought the way I worded my post made it clear that I was addressing the OP ("you didn't sign your post/give a link"). And spreading threads across multiple pages, instead of keeping them on the page on which they were started, is needlessly confusing and timewasting. — RobertATfm (talk) 20:29, August 26, 2014 (UTC)

File names

Hi, Robert! When you have a look on all of the files in this wiki you will recognise that there are a lot of file names which say nothing, which are only a combination of letters and numbers and sometimes very long. All to rename would be a lot of work! :D  Harry granger   Talk   contribs 15:12, October 31, 2015 (UTC)

Indeed; but "image.jpg" is a particularly bad case, for the reasons noted on the "Requests for renaming" and "Requests for administrator attention" pages. Hence why I think that this image in particular should be renamed (and possibly locked down, to forestall any further abuse). — RobertATfm (talk) 06:40, November 1, 2015 (UTC)
One of the other images of Luna Lovegood is called "007.jpg", although she doesn't look remotely like James Bond! :-) — RobertATfm (talk) 16:13, November 1, 2015 (UTC)

Decisions

There's no real need to call decisions "absurd". Talkpages are for discussing how to improve an article, not asking random questions. And category talkpages are not even supposed to be used in the first place, they're just there because MediaWiki requires an associated talk namespace with any namespace that exists. This is a wiki that does a lot of things wrongly, which I'm trying to help in improving to streamline things: article talkpages are where you go to discuss a deletion, not the category talkpage so that nobody will see it. --Sajuuk 18:25, March 22, 2016 (UTC)

Socks

Robert,

I am sorry to bring this to you rather than an admin, as I probably should, as I am already involved the wrong way.

User:KillerBird, a known sockpuppet of User:Jdogno7, has started his usual strings of bad edits. It's likely going to be necessary in the near future to deal with him.

My edit

Hey. I was hoping to have a talk about my edit which you changed back. I posted on the talk page which was ignored, and then I bumped it back and it was ignored again. My argument is this - the page Twelve Christmas Trees is not very different from the page Christmas tree which I noticed you do not agree with.

The twelve Christmas trees are Christmas trees! The subject needs only to be written about on the general page for what they are. The same information is on both, making the need for two kind of redundant. The name of the page Twelve Christmas Trees is not the given name for them in the book - they are not capitalised, they are simply just twelve trees. Per the rules of the wiki, we write things as they are written in the books meaning the page is wrong already, hence the redirect to the proper page. - RoseKate13 (talk) 17:50, December 10, 2017 (UTC)

Unused images

Sup, Robert? Hope all is well.

I'm saying the following in the sense that I absolutely understand where you are coming from, and the specific given reason you cited is accurate to the policy, but is it possible for you to not first use "being unused" as the reason for marking for deletion? It's a bit hard to explain, for example, I would not have helped out after seeing the reason given for file:Tumblr lw96dhGCPE1qjcyb2o1 500.jpg; HOWEVER, coincidentally, I happened to come across file:GOF promo Harry Potter Hogwarts uniform.jpg very soon after, making it a totally different situation. If the reason was given as "being a duplicate of file:GOF promo Harry Potter Hogwarts uniform.jpg, which was uploaded first" (which is true;) you are likely to get your desired action sooner. I'm not saying the policy should be disregarded, but there's priority, and a lot of the times, just because an image isn't used, doesn't mean they are of no value. Half of the cropped images of File:Magical Medicine Labels.jpg are unused, and it really doesn't make it a good reason for those that aren't, to be deleted. I know that perhaps the amount of time of the un-usage was how you are determining when they should be gone; but in a huge wiki that's populated with SOOOOOO many images, I think it is unfortunately super easily but totally understandable, for a lot of images to go under radar, and therefore remaining unused. I'll be even more honest with you, those Magical Medicine Labels? Some of them were easily found, due to uploaded by the same person. I thought I had seen all of them being separately uploaded, but when I went checking that person's upload log and not finding them, I thought I was hallucinating. It was only until I again went checking all the uploaded images in uploaded date, that I re-found the remaining batch of separate labels. There was one edit I likely would have made back in last November, had I been able to locate the image I wanted to use. The point? Sometimes it's not that nobody wants to use the images, but more about the images themselves not exactly being easy to find.

Hope that makes some sense, and doesn't come out as condescending or patronizing. Again, I'm not saying to disregard the policy, but am wondering if the effort can be focused elsewhere first. That's just me. I'll understand if it can't be done, but figured it doesn't hurt to ask.

Also, if you are interested, there's Forum:Treatment for similar images. That's something I do need input from other people, but I guess so far people are just too busy lol. --Sammm✦✧(talk) 05:30, January 8, 2019 (UTC)

Unknown house

You removed the unknown house category from Rowan, but by the same logic, it should also be removed from Jacob's sibling, Jacob and Elora Dunn. Also, there is no "Jacob's House" category where they could go instead. PetStarPlanet (talk) 09:00, January 13, 2019 (UTC)
