Not sure if I quite understand. The point is that lots of of people on Twitter have been trying to ferret out from JKR how Newt got expelled, but kept his wand, and why Fantastic Beasts says he graduated Hogwarts. She has been pretty mum about offering more details, but maybe you'd like to try and see if she answers your question about which Headmaster did the expelling? RE:Reference List Styling

As a general rule, we don't use <references> at all. Use {{Reflist}}. --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 02:04, April 16, 2016 (UTC)

re: reference

No, there isn't really a need for a quote that comes from a book to be added into a reference tag. The books will be available until the end of time (eventually they'll probably become eBooks), it's only necessary to state the book and the chapter in which the quote appears. There's no real purpose in having the whole quote in a reference, since that isn't what the references are for.

Either way, there'll be a point when the HP fandom dies out entirely and which this wiki will simply become an archive of a fandom that will eventually not exist. Quoting sections of the book wouldn't make any sense in context anyway. --Sajuuk 11:19, April 17, 2016 (UTC)

It clutters the page for nothing, references are meant for normal citations (ie <ref>medium, location</ref>).
I'd understand your POV if it was something from Pottermore, but the content you added didn't come from there, so there was no reason to quote it.
Also, quoting directly is never usually necessary, except when using in the quote template for the top of a section heading. Canonicity doesn't have anything to do with it, a reference is meant for just telling people where the information came from, it's not meant for just quoting sections of text because it has zero context at all. --Sajuuk 11:44, April 17, 2016 (UTC)
You are misinterpreting what the definition of "Notes" means: it's a section for reference notes, see this page for an example of what it's for. "Notes and references" is not meant for just directly quoting sections of text from a canonical source for the sake of it.
There's very little information here that isn't referenced. Even if the information was referenced, directly quoting something from a source doesn't help people to understand a reference.
As for "would appreciate you not erasing the extra time and effort this takes.", these are public community projects, so if a user feels it's unnecessary, they have the right to remove the information. Therefore, I will continue to remove direct quotes from reference tags as and when I see them, regardless if you spent tons of time trying to include it, as it's just clutter that doesn't improve anything.
If you disagree, you are most welcome to contact a sysop on this matter and get their opinion. I'm sure it would be similar to my own. --Sajuuk 12:09, April 17, 2016 (UTC)
I've weighed in on this matter on SuperSajuuk's user talk page. Starstuff (Owl me!) 00:44, April 23, 2016 (UTC)
Correct, if my bot is approved for use here, I plan to use it to update the links so they point at the templates. Uses less bytes for the same appearance, which helps out those on slow connections. :D --Sajuuk 08:04, April 23, 2016 (UTC)

You can do the portrait from leaning through straight from Photoshop not? like that.Invisibility 04:26, April 27, 2016 (UTC)

There are a variety of fixes possible; the best one is finding a better source image not taken at an angle. For now, I am just trying to put a stub in for these individuals - in the future I, and hopefully others, can improve the images and text. --Ironyak1 (talk) 19:25, April 27, 2016 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. Thanks a lot. But why do not you fix the portrait upright same as HeadmasterPhotoZoom959x779 I find it so beautiful.
If you fix the upright the portrait such as Headmaster Unidentified Sleeping in Blue, Unidentified Sleeping with Castle Sketch Headmaster, it will be very nice. Invisibility 05:03, April 28, 2016 (UTC)

Italy I say that you please edited straight again the Headmaster portraits you Added photo italics. Invisibility 04:46, April 30, 2016 (UTC)

I notice that you recently uploaded a number of images of portraits. However, you did not include a description, source, license, or categories. Please remember to include these in the future. Especially the license and source. Thanks! Starstuff (Owl me!) 01:47, May 1, 2016 (UTC)

I don't use "Add features and media" to upload image files. I use Special:Upload, which features a blank template in which one can input a description, source, license, and other data. It's important to provide the sources of images, since, technically, unsourced images are supposed to be deleted.
I get your confusion over which license to use. The simplest solution is to use {{screenshot}} for any image taken directly from one of the films, video games, or behind-the-scenes features from the DVDs/Blu-rays (i.e. images that are actual screen captures), and {{fairuse}} for everything else. Starstuff (Owl me!) 05:44, May 2, 2016 (UTC)
I don't own Harry Potter Limited Edition, unfortunately, though I wish I did! Someone who actually owns the set was kind enough to give editors of this site a huge trove of pictures from it a few years back. It was offered on her website as a giant (several gigabytes) download. This download has long since been deleted, but I still have the files backed up on my hard drive. The lucky owner photographed her books, rather than scanning them, so the pictures aren't the highest quality. That's why some of the images are grainy or tilted. But they're the best we have.
Another owner of the set posted a small selection of high-quality scans on the The Replica Prop Forum. These have also long since been deleted, but thankfully I was able to save them. If I remember correctly, File:TheGuardian.png was one of these scans, since the article text isn't legible in the above collection.
There isn't really an established file naming convention, but what you've described is pretty much the right idea. Starstuff (Owl me!) 07:23, May 2, 2016 (UTC)

I don't appreciate the jab you made towards me about the removal of content from a user talkpage. They're not sandboxes, so removing the content is completely valid and I'd appreciate if you could avoid making personal attacks about other editors on talkpages, especially as I have more experience editing on wiki's (I have been doing so for 6 years). I'd also recommend that you don't restore content contributed by others on their own profile pages, as this incites laziness and a tendency for others to not bother to do things properly. Cheers. --Sajuuk 15:51, May 3, 2016 (UTC)

Re: Active admins

I still make the occasional edit and will respond to messages left on my talkpage, but I'm not really too tapped into the wiki at this time. I think it would be best to leave my status as inactive. ProfessorTofty (talk) 00:27, May 10, 2016 (UTC)

RE:Link Templates

I think it's a great idea, this template is very easy to use and enable to be faster to type appearances. For someone who knows how to type articles in source code, it can only be a plus. The only drawback I see is that new users may not be comfortable with these templates, but what Yatagarasu proposed on the discussion (« put a list of the new templates onto the community message board, let the people know ») to settle that seems well thought out.
But I'm just a user on the French wiki and I contribute rarely on the English wiki (I think it's clear when we see my poor english, sorry for that), so I'm not well placed to estimate the usefulness of this template here, even if I think it's useful.
Shinra (mur) 21:40, May 14, 2016 (UTC)

There is no "B" option, as linking to the book page is the default output if nothing is supplied for the first unnamed parameter: however, I went and added an optional "B" parameter which will tie with default as a case option.
It would be better to get the opinions of sysops/other editors as to which format they'd prefer the chapter to be specified as, as all this changing of the format is surely going to start confusing people. I personally prefer keeping with |chapter=XX, purely for the sake of simplicity and less confusion that the use of unnamed parameters can cause, but if the community votes for your method, I'm not going to complain about it.
Writing stuff in a named parameter is far easier than trying to get people to remember the order of unnamed parameters, since unnamed parameters are taken in the order they're written in a transclusion, whereas it does not matter where a named parameter is put in a transclusion, as it it's named and therefore, order of parameters doesn't apply. --Sajuuk 20:31, May 15, 2016 (UTC)
Okay, disregard most of the above. I made some updates to the link templates, you can see an example usage here: User:SuperSajuuk/Sandbox. --Sajuuk 20:44, May 15, 2016 (UTC)
You probably missed the above post while you were responding as I was able to get your method to work in the templates. Also, double piping and knowing named parameters are non-issues, as anyone who has no idea how to transclude a template can either google search or use the help documents to understand how to do it. Trying to cram everything into a single parameter is a recipe for disastrous and inefficient code, everything being separate is better in the long run. --Sajuuk 20:53, May 15, 2016 (UTC)
I prefer this method, for the reason that the video games and the films have chapters themselves (ie the specific marker points on the DVD are chapters, and each "section" of the game are chapters), so the chapter can be specified for those in the same manner as a book.
Plus, putting it after means that the switch can be encased inside one set of italic and link wikitext, rather than the wikitext being duplicated for no real gain. If someone creates an obviously fake construct with the template onto a mainspace article, it just gets reverted like anything else, as it's essentially vandalism. --Sajuuk 21:06, May 15, 2016 (UTC)
Fixed the trailing space. I'm a little irritated that I give reasons for why I coded a template in a specific way, only to find that it's changed regardless. Never the less, if your method is what you prefer, then so be it. --Sajuuk 10:59, May 16, 2016 (UTC)

Policy discussions

I recently opened a couple of discussions on the Wizengamot forum proposing changes to policy. The first proposal concerns adding new guidelines on the listing of family members in character infoboxes to HPW:CIFG. The second proposal concerns updating our formal policy on the use of copyrighted material (such as screenshots from the films) to bring it into line with current practice. If you have time, feel free to check out these discussions, and contribute your thoughts and suggestions. Starstuff (Owl me!) 00:05, May 18, 2016 (UTC)

RC / Activity feed subpages

Just curious as to the point of all those subpages. RC has a namespace filter which allows you to filter out the results to the namespaces specified, unless there's some other reason behind it. --Sajuuk 19:38, May 20, 2016 (UTC)

I responded to the forum post, it is not really necessary and probably won't help people, they can either filter RC or simply change their preferences to show more edits at once. --Sajuuk 19:57, May 20, 2016 (UTC)

RE:Avery/Rosson & Goyle/Palmer

Hi. I should also change Augustus Roockwood because his role is in spotlight. So:

1. I don't know what license is for screencaps from internet which I edited.

2. Goyle: Alex Palmer have his role on spotlight as Death Eater, but if you will watch his whole showreel you can see as Voldemort removed mask from Goyle. But I am afraid that I no longer can show you because CV of him was removed. Proof:

3. Avery: I speak with Richard Rosson by email many times. But I can't write his email anywhere (He didn't tell me that I can't but if I would share your email anywhere you will not be pleased either) But if you want I will show you our conversation, But I will hide adress.

4. Now to Rookwood. Richard Trinder have on Spotlight role: Augustus Rockwood (Sic-Rookwood) Proof:

I will be glad if you will answer again and will continue speaking with me about Harry Potter. Cheers! --Matthew Bowyer Fan (talk) 12:06, May 22, 2016 (UTC)

RE:Referencing issues

Hello! I don't think anything came out of that discussion, as you can probably tell from it (except for the 2014 QWC reports -- those were my doing: I created an article about every single one of them once I learned Pottermore was going to be revamped; looking back, I am very thankful that I remembered to do that). --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 14:57, May 30, 2016 (UTC)

RE:Cursed Child pics?

Official pictures from Cursed Child can certainly be used in articles. Mind you, can is not must. There's no strict rule as to which image must appear in the infobox -- on most pages on major characters (Harry, Ginny and, now, Albus), you'd have to start a talk page vote to change the picture (to prevent counterproductive edit warring). --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 16:53, May 31, 2016 (UTC)

There have been some votes as what the main image should be on the Harry Potter article before -- just check the talk page archives (1 and 2). The reason why there hasn't been such discussion for the Albus Potter picture is that, prior to this we didn't have a choice: it was basically the DH: part 2 epilogue or nothing (hence why I said "and, now, Albus" on my message above). --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 20:45, May 31, 2016 (UTC)

Any advice?

Hey! I am new on here and I am still trying to figure out what to do for a lot of things. I just have a question about references. On the new page that I created about Professor Trelawney's predictions, I am going to add references. The first 9 predictions happen in the same chapter. Do I add a link at the end of every quote to the chapter, or just put a link for one or two of them? Thank you! :) --User:EmilyMills22 17:39, June 4, 2016 (UTC)

Character Description

I can't edit the character description page, edit crashes it. I would like to post:

I would go with option 2, but adding multiple sections to the infobox wouldn't be a big deal. Also do the screenplay book releases of the play and new movie count as written material?

Fantastic Beasts template

Could you take a look at Template:FB? I tried to tweak it so that it no longer referred to the Fantastic Beasts movie as a "film adaptation," since it cannot accurately be called an adaptation. However, the text for "FB|FA" is appearing in italics, and I don't know how to fix it. Starstuff (Owl me!) 04:58, June 8, 2016 (UTC)

Could you also up the FB template to account for the renaming of the screenplay book? Thanks! Starstuff (Owl me!) 05:31, June 8, 2016 (UTC)

Notice: This section contains spoilers from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

I´m not sure. I seem to remember a policy, perhaps it was an unwritten agreement, that insults and one time names should not be used for the infobox,

Otherwise, we would have Miss Mudblood as an alias for Hermione, Scarface as an alias for Harry and bitch as an alias for Bellatrix.

Also, according to Wikipedia, an alias is a name someone assumes for a purpose.

Given this, I´d say we should remove both Loony and the insultuve name for Fleur. (She's called "Schleim" which means "slime" in the German editions, by the way.

Maybe we should bring the definition of alias to the attention of the Forum?--Rodolphus (talk) 15:55, June 8, 2016 (UTC)
