*Talk Page Archive 1 (June-September 2009)

I've tagged this template for deletion, again. Not because I think it is a policy violation, but because it is unnecessary. If the user in question wants this box, then all they have to do is copy the raw code onto their page. Having a wiki template dedicated to purporting a view point that's completely false is unnaceptable, however. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talkcontribs).

Hey, so I've been mulling over some page ideas, but I'm not 100% sold that they are necessary or what to title them if they are. In Goblet of Fire there is a wizard who makes claims of being a dragon killer to impress a group of veela's, but then another wizard steps in and says that this wizard is actually a "dishwasher for the Leaky Cauldron" and that he is in fact a vampire hunter. The guy claiming to be a vampire hunter has a BTS blurp about him under the Vampire article, but the dragon killer/dishwasher has no mention, nor could I find mention of the job of dishwasher at the leaky cauldron. Any suggestions? --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 19:07, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

I just wanted to let you now I have created a new Sexual orientation article, redirecting Homosexuality and Asexuality to it.--L.V.K.T.V.J.Hogwarts(Send an owl!) 00:24, October 8, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't mean to rush you, but with the Deathly Halows: Part 1 premiere in a a month, we need an a couple FANs to become featured articles for that time, so can you help, with yor Unspeakable position? Seth Cooper and I have agreed it would be best if Elder Wand was featured on the premiere weekend, but it is your decision. Also, the FA and Featured picture need to be updated. Thanks.--L.V.K.T.V.J.Hogwarts(Send an owl!) 22:22, October 10, 2010 (UTC)

Could you fix the featured articles logos so that they aren't ad a picture of the charactwers? Or should I ask a Sysop?--Station7 20:52, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

The featured article logo appeared on a character's picture.--Station7 20:57, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

Hermione Granger to start with. ;) --Station7 21:08, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

Hey, I checked it out also, I looked at it with all the skins, and found that if Station7 is using the new wikia look, the feature article image does appear over the main photo/info box, but not in monobook or Monaco. --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 21:38, October 13, 2010 (UTC)

Bellatrix's whip

Hey, there's been some discussion about this article, and people who were at the advanced screening have apparently confirmed it is a spell, I was going to move the page but I'm not 100% sure what the article should be titled, Unidentified whip spell, Whip spell, Bellatrix Lestrange's whip spell, etc etc. --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 15:03, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

That I would say is the largest debate, clearly in the trailer she is using a whip, the question being whether it is a real whip of her own, or a spell she produced. This is what Damien wrote: "It's from the trailer, and those who went to the advance screening of the movie have confirmed she uses this spell to take Gryffindor's Sword from the Snatchers. Damien O'Hagen 14:51, October 14, 2010 (UTC)". --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 15:15, October 14, 2010 (UTC)
If you look carefully at the image and the trailer you can clearly see the distinctive shape of her wand handle. Damien O'Hagen 15:38, October 14, 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Nick! Thank you for the explanation. I think I now know how it functions whenever I want to use it. Thanks again!!! Harry granger 19:03, October 15, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I've just been very busy unfortunately. Have there been any major developments or new policies about which I should know? Starstuff (Owl me!) 19:24, October 18, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply, Nick; for the video blog forum, I'd say add it to the relevant policy. Its been an informal one for a while now, so codifying it will be fine. I support it personally, although I have failed to say so on the forum. As for the inactive admin one ... I'll hold it open a little longer as I've added a small caveat about administrators gracefully resigned instead of being forcibly de-opped. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 12:42, October 19, 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter wiki: Userboxes

Why do you see my edits as "propaganda campaign" and "gaming the system"? Is it forbidden to express fondness of a non-canonic character? Are userboxes only for canonic ones? --Fo01 07:21, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Look, you can use all the skirty rhetoric you want to claim that your fixation with Dumbledore's sexuality and his "ex-girlfriend" are objective and innocent, but in the context of reality, and specifically your history, it would be beyond ridiculous to expect anyone to believe such a thing. You're free to think what you please, of course, but it's insulting to everyone else's intelligence when you blithely deny that your actions are loaded, when they so obviously are. You've stopped just short of being overtly offensive, and you know it, so why bother pretending you don't understand what people are telling you? --Emmy () 08:12, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, Nick, but I really had to say that. --Emmy () 08:16, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Haha, I'd love to! Thanks. --Emmy () 08:29, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Dumbledore Template

I agree; I've deleted it. If he wants to recreate it using code of his user page then that's fine, but we won't take it as a template. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 12:13, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me the proper voting procedure. I only uploaded a newer version of the picture of Fleur because the one that was being voted for is photoshopped. I was only putting up the official one that was actually release from WB. I can show you multiple links to where the original image was released too, if you want. He does it again, we block him for a month. I hope this doesn't become a vendetta though. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 15:25, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

  • I just copied the raw code on my page, just like Cavalier One recommended me to do when he deleted the userbox. There are no reasons for a block, especially such a lengthy one. --Fo01 15:34, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Avada kedavra 2

Yeah why was stuff deleted under fatality. It said theories on how the spell kills possibly draining energy in a persons brain, killing every living cell, shutting all organs off , or having the soul go to the afterlife. i liked it, it should go back.Donmax 04:07, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

RE:Verification help

That could be a mix-up of a-Chamber of Secrets (GBC) item -- Revive Potion -- whose icon is a wand emitting a few sparks. But seeing as the so-called "Healing Sparkle" is from Philosopher's Stone, I have no idea what it is. And this brings another question to mind: wouldn't the dummy/glitch items (i.e. the ones one can only gain access via GameShark) be considered canon? After all, they were included in the game (albeit not accessible via normal gameplay)... -- Seth Cooper owl post! 20:20, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Fenwick family

Is it alright if I remove refences to Robbie Fenwick from the Fenwick family page? While there is at least one wizarding and one muggle Fenwick family known to exist, the page basically implies that they're the same family-- and that's kind of unlikely, considering Robbie is some kid Hermione Granger knew from back in the days of living among the muggles. I just wanted to ask before I made a relatively major alteration the page, small as it is. --Emmy () 19:09, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

Oh, thanks, that makes more sense than taking Robbie Fenwick off the page completely. --Emmy () 19:52, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I'm not sure if this is the appropriate way to contact you, but I couldn't find any other way that seemed more reasonable. (This is the first time I've tried to contribute to a wiki...please don't bite the newbie!)

As you can doubtless tell from my IP address, I'm the user who attempted to make a comment on "Talk:Dark Force Defence League" a few minutes ago. I had attempted to add links to my comment, which obviously did not work out. I'm still not sure what I did wrong. (This is one reason I prefer to do stuff like this by hand rather than trusting the software to do it for me!) I reposted my comment without the attempts at linking and it seems okay this time. Thanks for pointing out the, er, bloody-confusingness of my initial effort! 20:20, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

RE: Article titles

Well, can I just point out that if you're going to attack my new articles like that and change their names to lower case, you need to have a very good look through Category:Hogwarts locations, especially Category:Staircases, where every single conjectural name in that category has full capitals. Jpkilleen 15:12, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

"Affray" in the Chamber of Secrets

Could I/you possibly change the name to "Skirmish in the Chamber of Secrets" or, I don't know... "Confrontation in the Chamber of Secrets" or something? It's really bugging me that an "affray" really implies a dispute of some sort in a public place (and in British common law is a public order offence), and the Chamber of Secrets is pretty much as far from a public space as it gets... I didn't want to just change it on my own, but I think the term affray is really all wrong. --Emmy () 16:56, November 1, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks --Emmy () 17:17, November 1, 2010 (UTC)

Human Transfiguration

Sorry to bother you again, but I've basically created an altered and expanded version of the "Self-Transfiguration" article to a "human Transfiguration" article, including different types of human transfiguration, and adding some comparisons to Metamorphmagi in addition to the comparisons to Animagi. I've also include Barty Crouch Jr. transfiguring Malfoy into a ferret and his father into a bone. Can I go ahead and move it to Human transfiguration, or should I wait...? --Emmy () 20:29, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

RE:Doctor Flitwick

I see. I thought one could consider it cut-content because Rowling didn't strike just the word "doctor" (what I'm trying to say is that Rowling didn't correct "Dr. Flitwick" as "Professor Flitwick"; but replaced "Dr. Flitwick [...]" with a new (perhaps more catchy) sentence altogether. As for Ron's claim that doctors are "Muggle nutters that cut people up", I think he's referring to "doctor" as in "physician", as we know some wizards use "doctor" as an academic title, not being necessarily physicians (i.e. Dr. Medusa, Dr Ubbly, Dr Filibuster). This would be Flitwick's case. But, of course, if you still think it should be moved to BTS, I have no objection. -- Seth Cooper owl post! 23:55, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Hi, Nick! What has happened to this page? With all the sources in the middle of the text it is difficult to read! Harry granger 21:47, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I find the new Wiki has a lot of worsenings. When I use the new Wiki, I cannot see anymore which link I have already used. By the old Wiki the colour changed. That I appreciated. When I use the old form under preferences I see these differences but then I cannot see the number of my edits anymore. The one you let, the other you get! By the new Wiki I think the article gots longer because the place for the article seems to be smaller. That is not an improvement. But that is only my opinion. I don't want to say that all is worse but there are things who have worsened. But I think they will not change it back so we must live with the changings - the improvements as well as the worsenings. Harry granger 18:48, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

Looking through the transfiguration pages, I thought of something. Do we have an article on turning obkjects into others? I´d suggest the conjectural title Inanimate to inanimate transfiguration.--Rodolphus 10:07, November 6, 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter Premiere Events

Hi Nick, This is Kacie from Wikia Entertainment. I wanted to let you know that Wikia is celebrating the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:Part 1 by giving away a trip for 4 to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, hotel and airfare included! The giveaway will launch on Harry Potter Wiki tomorrow-- we hope it will excite both old and new users and motivate everyone to participate on the wiki! Our friends over at will be helping us promote the wiki and the giveaway to the larger community of Harry Potter fans. :)

The Wizarding World giveaway runs from November 8-30. To enter the giveaway, Harry Potter fans must create an account and leave a comment on the giveaway page answering the question: "If you could spend one day in Hogwarts, what would you do?" Each comment counts as an entry, and one lucky muggle will be randomly selected from all eligible entries on December 1st. Since you're a Harry Potter expert, we need your help to come up with a special, tricky Harry Potter trivia question on the giveaway page- it will be another way for extra dedicated HP fans to enter the giveaway. Can you and the other admins help us come up with a tough trivia question (and the answer) by tomorrow?

We will also be enabling category galleries (which beautify category pages) and article comments (which allow users to comment about an article) for the giveaway and premiere. these tools have proven to facilitate conversation, engagement and collaboration on many of our wikis, including Twilight Saga Wiki and Glee Wiki. We are positive that they will help the giveaway run more smoothly, allow users to review and discuss the movie much more easily, and foster a heightened sense of community here. If you have problems with this, please let me know.

In collaboration with local San Francisco radio station 92.7 KREV, Wikia is also giving away a limited number of tickets to the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in Redwood City on November 18. We hope to see Bay Area Harry Potter fanatics at the Redwood City AMC theater at 11:00pm on November 18 for a local Harry Potter meetup complete with games, raffles, prizes, costumes and picture-taking! If you or any Harry Potter Wikians you know are local to the San Francisco Bay Area, please come join us as our guests of honor! Thanks so much for all of your hard work on Harry Potter Wiki. Cheers---- Kacie@fandom (talk) 00:18, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

Nick, the first few difficult but not too crazy obscure questions you listed are PERFECT. You're amazing! Can you email a couple more like that to so no one here can find the answer on my talk page? Thank you so much!! ---- Kacie@fandom (talk) 01:10, November 8, 2010 (UTC)
I got your email--thank you!! So sorry you're too far away to attend the premiere. :( ---- Kacie@fandom (talk) 16:13, November 8, 2010 (UTC)
As much as I'd like to go, I have to pass. I work a full eight-hour shift that day; tack on about an hour each way driving to and from work (which is already 10 hours), then about another hour and a half each way traveling to San Francisco and back (3 hours), it's a strain on my schedule. By the time I got home from work that next Friday, I'd have been awake for 36 hours on almost no sleep. If those were my days off, it would be a different story. --Cubs Fan (Talk to me) 21:56, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

how long do you have to wait to edit a protected page? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ginnyweasley101 (talkcontribs).

Yeah, it's a pain to be sure. Any admin can change the backround with the theme designer, but like Cavalier said, Wikia will probably want us to keep this one, as they are showcasing us in their new advert. To be honest, I think moving to a new host is an option worth exploring. Many wikis are doing so, including World of Warcraft. Even though Wikia tried to bribe them into staying by offering them increased article width (which, by the way, the didn't offer anyone else). It's not a nice feeling, putting so much hard work into building an encyclopedia, and then being forced to sit back while Wikia change into something else:( Jayden Matthews 12:01, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

RE: Hoo boy

Good god! And I suppose those who have set up this competition are expecting you admins to sort through this mess and delete all the spam and invalid entries. If there is anything I can do to help you out please let me know. On a somewhat happier note, we are a short week away from Deathly Hallows:) I've upload a moving gif graphic of Jamie Campbell Bower as the young Gellert Grindelwald. Is there any way of getting it to move in the article, without having to click on it? Jayden Matthews 22:05, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for fixing that:) Well the shoutout from Mugglenet is cool, if nothing else. I guess there's nothing else we can do. It sure is inconsiderate of Wikia to force this madness on us, and then expect you guys to clean it up. Jayden Matthews 22:29, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

just in case

Hey, so I just thought I'd let you know that I'm still jobless and available pretty much 24/7 if you need help with anything with this whole contest/comments/new harry potter movie opening coming up this month. --BachLynnGryffindorcrest(Accio!) 23:44, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

Hey, Nick. Yesterday, a pair of anonymous IPs ( and inserted some fanon into a few articles that I had to revert. Can you block them? Thanks. --Cubs Fan (Talk to me) 09:39, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

Deleting comments

I had the same problem, and I'm doing it manually by adding code to the address bar like so: name/@comment username-somenumbers'''?redirect=no&action=delete'''. Copy the comment location in the address bar, and add the stuff in bold to the end and it will take you to the delete page. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 00:00, November 11, 2010 (UTC)
