RE:Pages for individual Daily Prophet articles

I don't think that it's going overboard myself, at least not considering we already have so many individual articles for letters and essays (some of which most minor indeed). To answer your question, yes, the articles are meant to supersede the Daily Prophet articles article (gosh, how many "articles" was I able to fit in one sentence!). As for their orphaned state, that can be arranged while the articles are being created. --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 00:54, August 13, 2013 (UTC)

The layout guide advises against using links within a quote, "unless it is the only mention in the article of a certain subject". Personally, I'd try to mention the subject on the main article (and link it there) first, only linking within the quote as a last resort (to avoid awkward wording or something of the sort). --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 19:05, August 13, 2013 (UTC)

Fantasy Food Bracket Tournament

Hey, ProfessorTofty! We have a really fun bracket tournament coming up specifically for fantasy foods and we were hoping that you could help us promote it on the Harry Potter Wikia in a blog or something! You can find more information here but we basically would love if every community on Wikia submitted their best fictional foods (ie. butterbeer/chocolate frogs/etc.) to compete in our Fantasy Food Fight to see what comes out on top! The submission period is underway so people can submit as many foods as they want in the main blog now. It would be great if you could help us to promote, and we hope you'll participate too! Collector's Edition

Hi Professor,

I contact you because i saw a discussion about the HP page to screen collector's edition and i just would like to know if the books will be available separately, if you've heard something about that?

I'm a huge fan of HP, but i can't afford this beautiful edition, i have the HP page to screen, but the whole collection is too expansive for me!!! So the possibility to buy them separately will be great!!!

Thank you in advance

Hey :) I have a little problem, so I really need your opinion please :) As you can see here, I found a screen in PoA PC version which says red salamanders are Amazonian salamanders. However, in PoA GBA version, Seth found that Amazonian salamanders are green. So, easy question: what do we do now? And, do you think we must create a page for each salamander? Will the REAL Charlie Weasley please stand up

I've noticed some incorrect content both here and in the HP fandom at large. The image used of from the Daily Prophet cutting from the Weasleys' trip to Egypt does have Charlie Weasley in it. However, the person people assume is Charlie is, in fact, Percy. Not only is it actually a picture of the actor playing Percy, but the book mentions Percy wearing a fez in the photo. Additionally, if you look to the right in the back row, you find an unidentified Weasley who is of a stockier build, as described in the books. This Weasley, being the only unidentified one, can only be the real Charlie Weasley.

I found a little information on the wiki: Slytherin_Quidditch_team#Members_of_Slytherin_team during 1991/1992 team. Crick Shabes. Who is that? Do we have a link or a source for him? I don't know that character :x Lady Junky 00:34, August 29, 2013 (UTC)

Wikia Guided Tours: "Children's Fantasy"

My name’s Matt and I’m a community development associate for Wikia. I’m in charge of a monthly feature called “Guided Tours” where I interview experts on a given topic, asking questions about how they got into their area of expertise and how they recommend others do the same. Our next feature is going to be Children's Fantasy -- and Harry Potter definitely fits the bill! Personally, I think the best Children's Fantasy can and should be enjoyed by people of all ages and I'd like to get the word out about various quality series.

If you could provide answers, as short or long as you see fit, to the questions below, your responses will be featured in the article. Check out the last Guided Tours article for an example. If you don't have time for this at the moment, please let me know if another admin on your wiki is better suited for the interview.

1. Tell me a bit about yourself and your involvement with the Harry Potter wiki.

2. How did you get into children's fantasy? Into Harry Potter?

3. How would you recommend a beginner get into Children's Fantasy? Any particular books/movies/comics/TV shows/games/etc. that would serve as a good starting point?

4. Anything you wouldn’t recommend?

5. Any additional advice you’d give to someone new to Children's Fantasy?

6. What resources on your wiki might be useful to an aspiring Children's Fantasy fan?

Thanks again,
Mhadick (talk) 21:36, September 19, 2013 (UTC)

Featured article

So, what do you think should we do with our FAs? I think the article about the baron has been featured for months now. I will also send a massege to Seth Cooper.--Rodolphus (talk) 13:32, October 5, 2013 (UTC)

User Helgen

As you can see from his talk page and his comment to a warning of mine, Mr Helgen is not interested in becoming a helpful member of this community; I think therefore that a block is warranted.

If approved, it is of course the operating admin's privilege to determine the block's length, but having met the likes of him on other wikis, and found them very hard to deal with, I'll take the liberty of recommending to start with a 1-to-3 months period.

MinorStoop 17:28, October 21, 2013 (UTC)

P.S. The pages Whisky and Firewhisky need to be moved back to their original spelling - I can't do it myself I can't delete Whiskey and Firewhiskey, now redirects that stand in the way. Thanks.

RE:Me being a possible Troll or Vandal.

Look, I mean no harm and I mean nothing bad on the wiki, so sorry if I do anything wrong. I do not mean to vandalise the wiki, which people like Seth Cooper and Hunnie Bunn think, Helgen. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Helgen (talkcontribs).

Wikia Gothic Takeover

To celebrate the upcoming release of I, Frankenstein, between the dates of 1/20 and 1/24, Wikia is inviting our premier communities to utilize some custom CSS to make their website appear “Gothic.” From old style fonts to dark color configurations, there are going to be a number of visual flourishes for our users to employ. Is this something you think your community will be interested in taking part in? Can you think of anything specific you’d like to add? Let me know!

Wikia's Gothic Community Takeover

Hey there! You might already be aware of this, but Wikia is currently running a contest where we're asking communities to Gothify their Wikias, similar to how Wikias changed up their look for Halloween, and we think it's something that your community will find interesting. Head over here for details! If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message.

General Spiff

Hey, ProfessorTofty! I am reaching out to see what you think about maybe giving the Harry Potter Wikia a small makeover. I've also reached out to Seth Cooper about this, but I haven't heard back yet so I wanted to know what your opinion was! This community has grown a lot since it was first founded, but the look of the wikia hasn't changed that much (aside from the switches to the theme during holidays). We were wondering if you and the rest of the Harry Potter community would like the idea of refreshing the wikia's look with maybe a new skin and wordmark, and maybe even redesigning the main page a little bit so all the same information is still displayed but in a more visually pleasing way?

I wanted to get your opinion on this before reaching out to the rest of the community, so let me know what you think! Grace @fandom (profile)•(talk) 15:57, May 2, 2014 (UTC)

I hoped it could be resolved through discussion but now that seems not likely. I feel that User:MinorStoop is giving me a hard time about editing without fully explaining what it is that is upsetting him.

Could I have assistance in resolving this matter?

Hi there. Thanks for the welcome. It seems my general wiki identity was logged in automatically somehow, as I never logged in. I simply proceeded to correct grammatical errors here and there and have been going over page after page ever since, fixing everything from small grammar problems to run-on sentences to redundant paragraph structure. I haven't actually added any new content, just improved overall readability. A common recurrence on some pages is that someone keeps adding the letter "U" to many words with an "OR" at the end, such as Colour instead of color, decour instead of decor, and a large number of other blemishes, some of which are flagged by spell-check and some which are not. Run-on sentences, sentences that repeat or directly contradict the previous sentence due to poor structure, and simple incorrect word choices seem rather common in the longer articles. I would guess this is just because nobody has the time to go over and micro-manage the long ones - most of the short articles are completely flawless. Let me know if you see an article in particular need of grammatical and sentence structure work, I enjoy it! Nokota (talk) 10:03, January 30, 2015 (UTC)

Hi there!

Fandom's Y.A. Society (the home for Young Adult books) created an exclusive Y.A. footer for our top Young Adult book communities. Would you consider adding the footer to your wiki? Your community might already have the Book Wiki template, but this new footer can replace it because it links to it at the bottom. You can add the new footer by adding the code {{YABookWikis}}.

Let me know if you have ANY questions or concerns. Thanks!

I'm not sure if you're the admin who handles the technical stuff on this wiki, but I just wanted to mention that it is slightly distressing how the infoboxes appear inconsistent (this one does not look like this one). I suggest following Wookieepedia's example (who use the same infoboxes as HPW does). Star Wars Wiki has managed to make a uniform infobox that resembles the only you have perfectly in the form on Wikia's new portable infoboxes. Please consider it, because this is just too big of a distraction for me (not that I really matter; hah!) OWL 05:03, January 30, 2016 (UTC)

Oh, yes indeed. Unfortunately, this little image is the only canon image of it, at least as of now.

We have used these kind of graphics--Rodolphus (talk) 20:29, February 9, 2016 (UTC) before, for example on artickes like "Enchanted razor" or "Cadogan's wand". Of course we would replace it should a better image ever become available. I´ve also noticed there was a little image of Binky on the Lavender Brown feature, though it looks very generic.--Rodolphus (talk) 20:29, February 9, 2016 (UTC)

Help. Now. Before I end up hitting someone.

C.Syde wrote to me "User rights are not status symbols. But in situations like this, you should leave the bigger problems to those that have the faith in the community. And if you disagree, don't edit war. Talk it out with other editors, and if that doesn't work, just accept what has been decided and move on. I suggest you just drop the subject and accept that you've made a miscalculation. Your evidence that Umbridge was older than Sirius is not nearly sufficient enough to be used in the article as proof. I know that you're probably feeling disappointed that your input to this page has been rejected out of hand, but other editors have been in this boat and they've felt the same way"

Now, he (or she) mentions -- AND I QUOTE -- "talk it out with other editors". Yet, in undoing my edit they caused an edit war. The only reason the edit war even began is because they didn't "talk it out with me" before undoing the edit. If they had, we could, maybe (unlikely, given my conversations with he/she) have come to an agreement on Umbridge. Unfortunately, they did not.

I accept my part in the edit war -- they won't accept theirs. Make them... or I WILL swing for them because I am more than <explicative deleted> off with them. --HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 23:29, February 16, 2016 (UTC)

I have written my side of the issue here. ― C.Syde (talk | contribs) 23:35, February 16, 2016 (UTC)

RE: HarryPotterRules

I've done what you requested, and stopped responding to their messages directly. It's obvious that they are either incapable of understanding what I've tried to explain to them, or they are refusing to understand. Given their record I'd say it's the latter. I am at a bit of a loss as to why they think it was my fault this happened when I had valid reasons for undoing their edit.

And they're saying that just because it's not up to them to decide who contacts them on their talk page, that I shouldn't have a right to remove nonconstructive messages from my talk page. When I said that it wasn't up to them to decide who undoes their edits and who leaves messages on their talk page, I meant myself as well.

But I had reasons for undoing their edit and I had reasons for leaving messages on their talk page. They on the other hand did not undo my edits and leave messages on my talk page in good faith, so I undid them. If they had been done in good faith, then I would have reconsidered. But since the issue is resolved, and I'm no longer responding to their complaints directly, that's pretty much all I have to say about it. ― C.Syde (talk | contribs) 21:21, February 19, 2016 (UTC)

Portable infoboxes

Heya! Wikia has hand-coded new versions of your existing infoboxes so that they work on a wide range of portable devices. We'd like to go ahead and implement these changes, but of course we'd want your input before proceeding much further. Please stop by this forum thread and give your views. And if you know of any of your fellow Harry Potter community members who'd be interested in this changeover, please invite them along, too! Thanks! — CzechOut @fandom 08:41, March 2, 2016 (UTC)

I know you have very little chance to make an edit on the wiki and have already indicated to me that you don't want to participate in discussions, but I've been asked to point you towards this forum post as part of courtesy since you are "active". Please ignore the part about "sysop" and focus only on the bot request. Thank you. --Sajuuk 13:18, May 9, 2016 (UTC)

There are some concerns that were raised, but the main concern ("Would I just use the bot to go around making whatever edits I wanted?") was already addressed by me saying that I would only use the bot for things that have been approved in a discussion. As far as I can see, this is the only actual concern about the bot and some contributions feel more like personal attacks against me. But I won't force you to post if you don't feel comfortable doing so. --Sajuuk 17:09, May 9, 2016 (UTC)

Gotcha - yeah Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is something else. Such an odd mix of fun deep references and some over the top fanfic tropes, but all the reviews say the production value is outstanding. The rumor mill says it may be on this side of the pond (NY & Toronto) by 2017 so we may have a chance to see it somewhat soon! Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 18:44, July 31, 2016 (UTC)

Pearl Dust

Hello Professor,

I was just wondering why we have decided to call the recently created article Pearl dust what it is rather than Pearl Dust, in the play, aren't both letter capitalised when Scorpius mentions it? I'm not too fussed, just wanted your thoughts.

Thanks -   ArrestoMomentum | talk  03:20, August 1, 2016 (UTC)

Huh. Interesting. Yeah, mine lists it as 'Pearl Dust,' do you have a US copy? Mine is a UK one, so maybe they are different?

Thanks -   ArrestoMomentum | talk  03:27, August 1, 2016 (UTC)

Alright, sounds like a plan. Personally, I don't see why 'Dust' is capitalised, but I guess the book is the book so we'll stick with that until otherwise notified.

Thanks for all the help,

RE: Undoing edits

I guess the main reason I have given up on giving him proper explanations is because KillerBird has already engaged in countless questionable behaviours, to the point where several users, myself included, have lost our faith in him as an editor. His actions have violated community consensus on several occasions, such as moving the Lily J. Potter page, disregarding the fact that it was in direct violation of a recent consensus that had been reached.

Also instead of accepting the consensus that has been reached, he bombarded us with questions, and refusing to take no for an answer. He wouldn't stop harassing us, and even after we explained to him where he had gone wrong, he chose to take issue with the fact that he wasn't allowed to do things as he pleased. He'd been warned countless times not to wreak havoc and make a mess on this wiki. And he did not listen. Not to mention he's already been blocked from editing this wiki in the past. And yet the first thing he did after his block expired was wreak more havoc, and doing more things that are in violation of the recent consensuses that have been reached.

I myself warned him against doing this sort of thing without general agreement, but he refused to listen. All he did was argue and insist on hounding us with questions. In situations like this, he shouldn't be asking why things are done this way, he should just do. He's already been blocked once after all. And it's clear that he hasn't learned from that. If I was blocked from editing this wiki, I would have learned from that on my first try. I would be a more cautious and wise user after returning from a block, and from what I've seen here, that block doesn't seem to have changed him a bit.

Cubs Fan2007 recently said that he's kind of on his radar, and he's heard through the grapevine that KillerBird is a sock of Jdogno7. He reverted one of his edits on Delphini earlier and he said he is doing his best to refrain from starting an edit war. He said that he has said his piece, and he's going to let someone else try (however fruitless) to reason with him. I have tried countless times to reason with him, but they have failed. It's obvious that he's a lost cause and that nothing I say to him is going to have a positive outcome. ― C.Syde (talk | contribs) 07:42, August 7, 2016 (UTC)

"I guess the main reason I have given up on giving him proper explanations is because KillerBird has already engaged in countless questionable behaviours, to the point where several users, myself included, have lost our faith in him as an editor.": What behaviours specifically? "His actions have violated community consensus on several occasions, such as moving the Lily J. Potter page, disregarding the fact that it was in direct violation of a recent consensus that had been reached.": I was honestly not aware of such a consensus on Lily J. Potter (nee Evans). Sorry then.
"Also instead of accepting the consensus that has been reached, he bombarded us with questions, and refusing to take no for an answer.": Not true. "He wouldn't stop harassing us, and even after we explained to him where he had gone wrong, he chose to take issue with the fact that he wasn't allowed to do things as he pleased.": Who is "us" that I am supposed to have "harassed"? When did you explain to me where I had gone wrong?
"I myself warned him against doing this sort of thing without general agreement, but he refused to listen.": When? "All he did was argue and insist on hounding us with questions.": I put my point forward for how I believed there was logic to my view. I was asking questions to gain a better understanding.
"In situations like this, he shouldn't be asking why things are done this way, he should just do.": Obey blindly without thinking. Good idea. "He's already been blocked once after all.": Because you put on the helpless victim routine when you had lost an argument. "And it's clear that he hasn't learned from that.": I have learned things since then. Some of them worrying.
"Cubs Fan2007 recently said that he's kind of on his radar, and he's heard through the grapevine that KillerBird is a sock of Jdogno7.": The grapevine is off. "He reverted one of his edits on Delphini earlier and he said he is doing his best to refrain from starting an edit war.": I may not agree with Cubs Fan2007 on the edit he undid but I respect his given opinion on the matter to leave it. "He said that he has said his piece, and he's going to let someone else try (however fruitless) to reason with him. "I have tried countless times to reason with him, but they have failed.": They have failed because you refused to explain." "It's obvious that he's a lost cause and that nothing I say to him is going to have a positive outcome.": You have not tried hard enough.

I did explain to you that what you were doing was in violation of community consensus. And if you didn't realise that earlier, then you should have used your common sense and thought before you did. These are avoidable mistakes which you should already be able to do. I refuse to argue with you about this subject, because you're just stretching the truth, to show yourself in a better light. This is what happened, and you were blocked, not simply because you violated community consensus, but because you refused to stop harassing me, even after I told you time and time again, to stop pestering me. But no, you chose to ignore what I told you, because you insisted on believing that I meant to tell you to stop questioning me. I didn't intend to do that at all. You were pestering me, and you wouldn't stop. ― C.Syde (talk | contribs) 09:27, August 7, 2016 (UTC)

Forum request

Hi, Prof. It's a long time I know. The User:TAlim 1994 pleaded me to promote his forum request and so I thought I do him the favour and suggested also to him to leave a message on the talk pages of the admins. Perhaps you have time and have a look?  Harry granger   Talk   contribs 21:35, August 24, 2016 (UTC)

Bot rights

Hello! I'm Yatalu, Wikia Helper for Dutch communities. Flightmare and I are planning to help out nl.harrypotter by adding interlanguage links to the Harry Potter wikis. For that, we would need Botalu to have bot rights. Would you be okay with us giving the account bot rights to run the bot for interlanguage links? Thanks in advance!

Is there any requirement for interlanguage wikis?

Hi there Professor! First time talking to you on this wiki (I think!)

I don't think I'll be editing here long-term wise (since it's not lacking contributors, and I'm usually a viewer here). Anyways, at the bottom of the page Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, I noticed a few interlanguage links that aren't activated; for big wikis such as this one, I think the Staff at CC would want an actual Admin sending in the request, instead of from a random bystander. I know on the Admin page you are listed as inactive, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to go to a familiar face first, since I'm not exactly sure how it should be dealt with.

The main question is stated in the section title; I just want to know if there's a certain qualification for interlanguage wikis, cuz I actually know of at least one Wikia wiki that declines establishing interlanguage links until the wikis in other languages reach certain content page count. Was wondering if something like that is going on here as well.

At frist I kind of assume it was the case, but I later saw some of the linked ones below:

So yeah... I guess seeing those smaller-in-size wikis is more reassuring? Anyways, the missing interlanguage links on PS are: ka/sh/ro/sl/sr; I found the following:

Sans the Georgian wiki, the rest at least has more content then one of the already-linked wikis, so I figured someone should probably bring this to an official staff on this wiki. If you don't feel like this is something for you to decide, and that there's a specific Admin you know that is the go-to person for this situation, direct me there and I'll copy what I wrote onto the respective Talk page! =D

Note that those are just the easier-found wikis, I don't understand any of those languages and I didn't do an in depth search; there could be more HP wikis in those languages, but I guess it's up to them to promote themselves if they want to be represented for those languages. None of those wikis seems terribly active recently, but then again, a bunch of the already-linked wikis aren't exactly faring any better, so there's that.

Anyways, let me know your thoughts! Thanks for reading this! :3

RE:Fallen Fifty

I can confirm that in the UK 1st edition the "the" isn't capitalized. --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 02:51, March 27, 2017 (UTC)

E. W. Limus and M. L. Minas

I would like to inform you of two errors on your wiki. On the Article M. L. Minas and E. W. Limus, it seems to me that the names are wrong. I looked at your sources for their names but even while zooming, the writings are illegible. Writing for the French Harry Potter wiki, I photographed much more near the names: over here

As you can see from the file, it is C. H. Limus instead of E. W. Limus and M. L. Minus instead of Mr. L. Minas.

You may have another source but I wanted to warn you as the creator of both pages Starstuff no longer seems active.

Sorry for my awkward English.

Wordmark and Background

Hello! I'm just letting you know that because of the release of Crimes of Grindelwald I have taken it upon myself to update the site's wordmark and background. This was mainly because the old wordmark had the block of white around the actual logo rather than the transparency that would have allowed it to blend in with the header color. I used the current font style for Crimes of Grindelwald to tie in with the film, and also used promotional material to update the background which was still using images from Fantastic Beasts. I have also updated the main page slider with more relevant articles for the new film.

Usually I look for input when making changes like this that affect the way the site looks in a significant way, but I felt that the update was needed due to the release of the new movie so I apologise if the change is sudden or jarring. In hindsight I should I have done this earlier and gotten input from the administration team so if you feel any changes need to be made, or the changes reverted, then please let me know. Hopefully though, the design rework is acceptable. Once the film is over, I will endeavour to create a new permanent wordmark that looks better in the header space. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 14:01, November 19, 2018 (UTC)

How to find new fantasy franchises to get into

Hello Professor Tofty,

I am currently doing a study on the challenges fantasy fans face in finding the next fantasy franchise they would like to get into and where to get access to that content.

Given your role as an admin for the Harry Potter wiki, I would be keen to interview you to get your thought on this. What would be the best way to do this and would you have some availability to connect on this over the coming weeks?
