Sorry to bother, but wanted to get your perspective on this Forum:Cursed_Child_Spoilers. Should leaks from the play be removed as part of a #KeepTheSecrets campaign, or under the issue of Verifiability, or left to stand for those who are interested in pursuing spoilers. I can see the edit wars brewing... Any stance on the matter? Thanks --Ironyak1 (talk) 22:42, June 7, 2016 (UTC)

Collapsible Section

All ready to go or does Binky's backstory need to be fleshed out? ;) I've seen several major spoilers already so trying to get ahead some of it. Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 00:42, June 8, 2016 (UTC)

I wrote a bit more to test out how the spoilerbox handles images. Seems good to go. Starstuff (Owl me!) 01:00, June 8, 2016 (UTC)
I'd also prefer it if the spoilerbox was a template, but I don't know how to get it to work, so I guess we'll just have to copy the spoilerbox code into each article. Starstuff (Owl me!) 01:02, June 8, 2016 (UTC)
See Seth's alternative in the forum. I think I could make your section, or Seth's tabber, into a template with a parameter if that is desired or we could just copy&paste - whatever works. --Ironyak1 (talk) 01:14, June 8, 2016 (UTC)
As you've noticed the collapsible section seems a bit fragile and fails to display when more complicated markup is used within in. I will try to see if there is anything that can be done with the template, but if we run into issues, it may best just copy the code to the page as this seems to fix the problem. --Ironyak1 (talk) 18:34, June 8, 2016 (UTC)

Follow up

Notice: This section contains spoilers from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Having read more about our earlier discussion, it sounds nuts on the surface, but it may also be a grand metaphor about the dangers of an author returning to mess with her previous work - be interesting to find out where it ends up and what that metaphoric lesson will be for everyone! (keeping it on the down-low in case Seth is peeking ;) --Ironyak1 (talk) 04:45, June 8, 2016 (UTC)
Very good analysis. The plot elements probably seem more far-fetched in isolation. I've always had a strong dislike for the Ron/Hermione relationship, so there's a certain satisfaction in the thought of it being retconned out of canon, but, at the same time, actually messing with time would have dire consequences. And it will be interesting to see if the play explores the moral implications thereof. Starstuff 04:51, June 8, 2016 (UTC)

Thanks - I had seen the twitlonger summary and there are plenty of WTF moments in there. I remain hopeful there is more going on than is being told and Jo is able to wrap it all together into something meaningful and not just a "careful what you wish for" lesson to the fandom. (keeping fingers and toes crossed till Thursday) --Ironyak1 (talk) 08:36, June 8, 2016 (UTC)

This comment for some reason made the whole reddit thread #2 worth it for me: Obi-Wan-Canblowme • 37m This has to be a Weasley's Wizard Wheezes Mad Lib or something. No way this is real.

Now we just need to see if canon was broken or even advanced in some way or if was all a zero sum game. Still holding out hope for FB! Eternally optimistic --Ironyak1 (talk) 00:03, June 10, 2016 (UTC)

What does it say that everything I've read so far reminds me of My Immortal? Starstuff 21:59, June 10, 2016‎

I never got into fanfic (was always more a wrocker - still has a prominent place on my playlists :) so I had to read up on this reference. As I've preordered the script book, I hope the comparison is misplaced, but wouldn't that be an epic fan tribute if it's written phonetically with several different spellings for every character? ;)

I think the unlikely-friendship/relationship-against-the-world would have worked great without all the AU shenanigans. Could have still done fan service via portraits, pensieve-like flashbacks of lost scenes, or prophecy style foreshadowing. Delphi could even be there although making her backstory more murky and rumored may have been better. Losing the closed-loop elegance of POA seems like a major mistake. However as the spoilers become more refined, I am finding more to like so I'm holding out hope (always ;) --Ironyak1 (talk) 15:28, June 11, 2016 (UTC)

RE: Fantastic Beasts template

I think these are sorted out now with the proper direct links and formatting:
{{FB|S}} = Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay
{{FB|FA}} = the film inspired by Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Handling spoiler content

Notice: This section contains spoilers from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

As the play delves into time travel, how should I do that in articles; a tab listed as "alternate universe" or something? --HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 01:54, June 11, 2016 (UTC)
The infobox on the Albus Potter article is a currently a huge spoiler. People's eyes may very well be drawn to the green of the infobox before they read the spoiler header. Thus we should probably implement tabs to shield spoilers in infoboxes.
We ought to hold a discussion to determine how best to handle coverage of alternate-universe events, but we could take some pointers from Memory Alpha, the Star Trek wiki. I can't add links without breaking the spoilerbox, but their article on Spock is a good example. Articles on Memory Alpha featuring AU content are marked with a "multiple realities" header. They have spin-off articles for covering Mirror Universe!Spock and Reboot Universe!/Quinto!Spock in greater depth instead of trying to fit it all under the main Spock article. Although I'm not sure we'll have a need to create spin-off articles for the AU versions of characters. User:Starstuff 02:11, June 11, 2016‎
Are you able to add the tab to the infobox?
Yeah, I don't think we'll need to crate an "Alternate Universe Hermione Granger" page, but we'll need some heading. There's only you, I and Ironyak who're willing to be spoiled until July though...--HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 02:16, June 11, 2016 (UTC)
Also, I am saving the plot spoilers here for future usage. --HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 02:26, June 11, 2016 (UTC)
Sorry I had to revert your changes to Albus Potter. The current plan is to quarantine spoiler content inside of a spoilerbox under a single section of an article until September 1. So, unfortunately, we can't update the introductory sections to contain spoiler information. Thus we cannot update the Petunia Dursley and Astoria Malfoy introductions to note their canonical deaths until after the spoiler blackout has elapsed. This means that the majority of of these articles are going to be out of sync with the spoiler sections, but this is an unavoidable consequence of our effort to prevent people from being unwillingly spoiled.
User:Ironyak1 recently created some tabbed infoboxes for another proposal (see Forum:Character_Images_and_Infoboxes) which we could use to create spoiler infoboxs. I'm not especially good at coding, but I can toy around to try to get something working. Otherwise I'm sure Ironyak1 would be willing to help perfect the infoboxes.
There's also the question of how to handle play-only characters. For example, Delphi's parentage is a giant spoiler, so I'd suggest titling her article after her assumed name ("Delphinus Diggory") for the duration of the spoiler blackout. Also only mentioning non-spoilery information in the introduction. User:Starstuff 02:40, June 11, 2016‎
Playing with spoiler section and infobox options now -- User:Ironyak1 02:49, June 11, 2016 (UTC)
cc-spoilerbox will need some research to figure out how to pass some of the formatting text through the parser. Can look at it later today, but can copy down the template code to a page for now if needed.
Using User:Ironyak1 to play with tabber on the infobox - still rough but looks to be a proof of concept. Will continue to refine.
Not sure about AU issue - links to see how others handled are appreciated. --Ironyak1 (talk) 16:15, June 11, 2016 (UTC)
Would it be possible to move the tabs over so they line up with the infobox? Or do you intend to switch the spoiler quarantine method to switchable tabs as opposed to the spoilerbox? Starstuff (Owl me!) 03:12, June 11, 2016 (UTC)
Tabber is new to me so it will take some time to figure out how to tweak it. I've pushed the tabs right for now, but note that it actually allows for making entirely separate pages if need be on each tab. One option would be just to have the normal page, and then an entire CC page with all the new info. When spoiler protection is over, we can just remove the old page and leave CC. Just another option to confining edits to the cc-spoiler box. --Ironyak1 (talk) 03:21, June 11, 2016 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea. User:Starstuff 03:31, June 11, 2016‎
I'm not sure how to describe them, but could we do like the Once Upon A Time Wiki and have big section covers and drop down boxes that you have to open and close -- we can put one at the top of the page and a warning of spoilers that covers the page first. --HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 10:14, June 11, 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the pointer to Once Upon Time Wiki - their collapsable sections were done a little differently and seem to handle complicated markup better so I changed ours to work similarly. Indents, links, and even Starstuff's fancy signature seem to be working inside them now!

As I mentioned in the forum characters with small CC details to add (like McGonagall) can use the cc-spoilerbox while major reveals (like Scorpius) will need a tabber page. Let me setup Albus as a test case and we can go from there. NOTE: Avoid putting spoiler info as Section names or in the edit Summary as this is visible in other ways! --Ironyak1 (talk) 16:15, June 11, 2016 (UTC)

Can I suggest that we edit full pages and not sections? Pretty telling when the page is Bellatrix, the section summary is Lord Voldemort, or vice versa and the next major page edits are Delphi (or god forbid Talk:Delphi Riddle like earlier today ;). I originally put the cc-spoilerbox up at the end of the intro summary, but it kept getting move into Family or Relationships so I just let it be, although it shows lot of what is going on in RC. Just an idea to help obsfucate WikiActivity/RC a bit. Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 05:47, June 13, 2016 (UTC)

It is really only feasible for us to offer spoiler protection at the article level. So if people are diving into the internal workings of the wiki, and looking at the recent changes list or pressing "edit" to view the source of articles, they should be prepared for the possibility of encountering spoilers. Starstuff (Owl me!) 06:10, June 13, 2016 (UTC)
I understand where you are coming from on this and I recognise it as an uphill or impossible battle; however taking some small steps in how pages are editted or summaries written can avoid some of these spoilers leaking through into the Hot Spots box, or Wiki Activity lists (largely for Seth's sake here). As for users editting the articles, yeah not much can be done there to shield their fragile minds ;) I liked how you added Craig as the summary text just had the spoiler warning unlike the Delphi addition which unintentionally had the whole "daughter of blahdeblah" in it and the subsequent rename and discussion was just icing on that cake. It is interesting how no one has bothered with Rose's sorting, the trolley witch reveal, or Cedric's alternate fate - like it or not, the fandom's imagination is fixated on Delphi's heritage (curst chile rox! ;) --Ironyak1 (talk) 06:50, June 13, 2016 (UTC)
Hey - if you're still around I'll be in chat for awhile if you want to talk about the new Cursed Child policy. Probably save me a tl;dr post here about my thoughts on the matter :) Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 03:06, June 15, 2016 (UTC)

Source Links redux

As I'm working through a larger list of pages that have UK spelling issues, I am finding more opportunities for implementing some of my previous ideas for the source link templates to create consistent text for common links to the canonical sources (try saying that five times fast). I am adding both a Film Adaption option:
{{PS|FA}} = the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as well as automatically including a chapter name option based on the B (for book) and chapter number:
{{PS|B|1}} = Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 1 (The Boy Who Lived)
{{PS|B|1|25}} = Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 1 (The Boy Who Lived), page 25
If a chapter name isn't wanted, there are still these options:
{{PS|chapter=1}} = Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 1
{{PS|1|2}} = Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 1, page 2

Just wanted to bring these changes to your attention and see if you have other ideas along these lines or suggestions for improvements. Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 20:51, June 12, 2016 (UTC)

This looks good so far. If find any issues down the road, I'll let you know, though. :) Starstuff (Owl me!) 02:01, June 13, 2016 (UTC)

Hey - just thought you'd be interested to know that I got a hold of a used copy of Harry Potter Limited Edition. When you have some time and interest, let me know if there are pages missing from your scans or anything you want a better image of and I'll send it along. Hoping things improve soon for you and yours - all the best. --Ironyak1 (talk) 05:10, August 6, 2016 (UTC)

Thanks again for the kind wishes! It's really cool to hear you've gotten your hands on a copy of HPLE. I'll admit that I'm a teensy bit jealous! It would be awesome if we could could progressively go through Category:Images from Harry Potter Limited Edition and replace blurry and low-resolution images with higher-quality scans. Some of the text in the current photos is illegible, so better quality images might allow us to read it, and create or edit articles accordingly. I also watched a flip-through of the Graphic Arts book on YouTube that featured some pages that are absent from my scan collection. I'll watch it again and try to find omissions. Starstuff (Owl me!) 03:48, September 12, 2016 (UTC)
Some omissions that immediately stuck out from the flip-through video:
I also don't seem to have all of the record covers (for example, File:My Brazilian Love Music.png). Starstuff (Owl me!) 04:10, September 12, 2016 (UTC)
I coaxed my aging scanner (not scanning smoothly so images may have lines in them) to make a 600 dpi scan of the book labels and uploaded them here. In order to get under the 10 meg limit I saved them as a jpg, but I have a 33 meg png that I could also slice into sections. Let me know what you think works best and I can scan the Piquant Toothpaste page.
The record covers given in HLPE|G are: Equestrian Anthems, Volume 4, Love Celebration, Volume 2, Locked Out of the House Classics, My Brazilian Love Music, Tap Dancing Fury, Volume 1, Wakefields' Honky Classics which all seem to have images for the articles. The only new one may be an unseen back cover for Wizard Waltz from GOF, so I can add that.
Overall, there are many, many images, but it takes lots of time just to figure out out which of them might be new so if you have any pages you want scanned to help tackle the image identification, cropping, & uploading let me know - I'll never have time to process them all! --Ironyak1 (talk) 21:03, September 20, 2016 (UTC)

My edits

Hey, I saw you undid my edits. Slughorn began teaching in the 1910s, around the same time Dumbledore did... so he did teach Callidora, Charis and the others who's infoboxes I changed. That is why I changed them. --HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 23:47, September 15, 2016 (UTC)

The choice to apply Slughorn's statement in HBP4 that "the whole Black family had been in my house" to students he would have taught was the result of this this discussion way back in 2009. Dumbledore had to be teaching at Hogwarts by 1938, when he recruited Tom Riddle, and it's stated in HBP5 that Slughorn started teaching around the same time as him, so we can conclude that Slughorn was also at Hogwarts by 1938. Thus, that year was chosen as the earliest date for students he could've taught, since there was no solid proof he was teaching before then. If new information has been released which clarifies the time when Dumbledore and Slughorn started at Hogwarts, which would consequently move back the threshold for Blacks whom Slughorn would have taught, the rationale should be explained in a footnote on the Cedrella and Callidora articles. Starstuff (Owl me!) 00:12, September 16, 2016 (UTC)

Slughorn was at Hogwarts in 1931 -- the new e-book explicitly states FIFTY YEARS of service - so Callidora, Cedrella and Charis (born in 1915, 1916 - 1919, and 1919 respectively) would have been at Hogwarts from 1926/27 - 1934/35, 1927/8/9/30 - 1935/36/37/38, 1930 - 1938. Slughorn, who began in 1931, would know their houses if he took house points off them or from their badges or from the specific houses they were in in Potions classes. Thus, we can take Slughorns word of every Black being in Slytherin as literal -- at least for the ones from 1931 Hogwarts attendance to 1981. THAT is why I changed them; Slughorn would know their house, you see?--HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 00:20, September 16, 2016 (UTC)

Fair enough. I haven't got a chance to have more than a cursory look at the new content from the ebooks yet. There still ought to be a footnote explaining all of this in the affected articles to avoid further confusion. Starstuff (Owl me!) 00:37, September 16, 2016 (UTC)

I put it in a reference, if that works. Callidora, Cedrella, Charis, Cassiopeia, Dorea, Walburga, Orion, Alphard, Cygnus III, Bellatrix, Andromeda, Narcissa and Regulus are all 100% confirmed Slytherin now. They only ones we don't know about are whether Slughorn considers people like Belvina's children as part of the "Black Family" in his speech. \I'll edit the infoboxes accordingly and add the reference in.--HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 00:40, September 16, 2016 (UTC)

RE FB Mobile game

Yeah, the rationing and repetition is pretty rough. Thankfully there is a MOD apk version out there that gives unlimited currencies (other than stars) so it can be played without those interruptions ;) Some of the characters and stories for each level are actually decent once you get used to the repetitive 'hidden object' game play. PS - thanks for cleaning up the articles afterwards - I always tend to forget categories and defaultsort details! Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 05:55, October 29, 2016 (UTC)

My iPad is only a few months old and still under warranty. ;) So I guess it's YouTube videos for me.
The art in the game is rather lovely. With the few levels I've played, though, I noticed that you're given the same ten or so objects to find over and over, even though there's typically dozens of objects in the pictures. The use of British English terminlogy was also kind of problematic when the challenges are timed. I had to pause the game to Google "bunting." Starstuff (Owl me!) 06:19, October 29, 2016 (UTC)
I'm actually running it on Nox which is an android emulator for Windows (makes it easier to get screenshots, take notes, etc). For a similar approach, you might look at Bluestacks android emulator if you have a Mac.
The art is nice and it's great to finally have canonical images for some of the beasts, but I do agree that bunting, open tin, and other UK expressions obsfucates some of the objects even more (thankfully there is a hint system to help out). --Ironyak1 (talk) 07:38, October 29, 2016 (UTC)

Why?--HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 02:17, November 2, 2016 (UTC)

I'm not going to get into it. Needless to say I'm extremely disappointed and appalled by this casting news. Starstuff (Owl me!) 02:24, November 2, 2016 (UTC)

Assuming it's true. And, if we only see him from behind, they may recast as a different actor for front on shots in later films.--HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 02:34, November 2, 2016 (UTC)

Sorry to hear that Starstuff - this casting announcement has definitely seen some backlash already, so you're not alone. --Ironyak1 (talk) 02:40, November 2, 2016 (UTC)
I'd understand if Depp was secretly cast and filmed his scenes before the events of this past May. But they've had months to quietly cut his footage, re-cast his role, and re-shoot his scenes. So that leaves me with two equally troubling conclusions: either Depp was cast and filmed his scenes post-May, or he was cast and shot his scenes pre-May, but the studio has been deliberately concealing that fact for six months in the hopes of preventing the entire lead-up to the film's release being dogged by controversy like Doctor Strange. They had to know that this fandom wouldn't react positively to Depp's inclusion in the film. This is a very socially-conscious fandom. Depp's actions aren't something that can be overlooked (or forgiven). Starstuff (Owl me!) 03:16, November 2, 2016 (UTC)

Johnny Depp

Hey, how come you kept me from creating a page for Johnny Depp, he's already been announced to make a cameo appearance in the Fantastic Beasts movie and to have a larger role for the sequel. (Hobbiton777 (talk) 15:52, November 2, 2016 (UTC))

The casting has not been officially confirmed by Warner Bros. In the event it is, the person in question may be listed in the cast list of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (film) article. An accused abuser will not be getting an article on this wiki on my watch. Starstuff (Owl me!) 18:14, November 2, 2016 (UTC)
Technically, that's abusing your privileges as a page will have to be made when the film comes out. You deny it, you're abusing the privileges of an admin and decreasing the usefulness of this wiki as you're preventing information from being added. Either that, or we get rid of you as an admin. And, just so we're clear, he was only accused; nothing was proven. Innocent until proven guilty. --HarryPotterRules1 (talk) 18:18, November 2, 2016 (UTC)
Regarding my deletion of Depp article, I see it as an exercise of the "be bold" principle. This isn't Wikipedia, where there is a rigid, explicitly-defined set of deletion criteria that admins are charged with enforcing objectively. In general, it isn't best practice for wiki admins to act unilaterally or arbitrarily, but Wikia treats the wikis it hosts as self-governing communities, giving admins relatively wide latitude. We are allowed to make judgment calls if we believe they are in the best interests of the wikis we serve, and as long as were aren't acting against an established consensus. This is probably the biggest judgment call I've made in eight years on this wiki, but I stand by it. I determined that the potential harm of covering the subject in question (sending a harmful message to this wiki's primary intended audience of young readers and triggering abuse survivors) outweighed the benefits. Starstuff (Owl me!) 20:34, November 2, 2016 (UTC)
With all due respect, Starstuff, if you believe that the lack of an official confirmation from Warner Bross somehow invalidates the claim that Johnny Depp has been cast as Grindelwald, then I believe it would have been more prudent if you had informed Hobbiton777 of the reason you denied the creation of a page for Johnny Depp in the first place. Furthermore, I'd say you are quite bold yourself.
An "accused abuser will not have a page on this wiki on my watch" is a rather impertinent thing to say, and as a very dedicated, if admittedly a bit argumentative, contribrutor to the wiki, I believe it would be the best interest of this wiki if we created a policy preventing any individual Administrator from making "judgement calls" and stick to consensus if the only argument you can think of is "I am an Administrator, thus entitled". That is, forgive my bluntness, at least the only argument I found when reading your justification of your decision. I would also like to point out that creating a page for Johnny Depp, even if the source turned out to be inaccurate in the future, not even remotely constitutes to sending harmful messanges to the readers.
