:No worries! But, as the supporting notes even pointed out, the green colour scheme is used for some non-Slytherin characters on Pottermore, including Chastity Barebone. Hello, Starstuff, how have you been keeping? Even though [[User_talk:Starstuff/Archive_17#Remember_Danniesen.3F|I already know your feelings on the matter]], I am obliged to show you [http://taoot.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk%3ASeth_Cooper#My_block_on_the_HP_wikia: this] so that I can't be accused of any unfairness. Again, of course, you are under no obligation to respond. I should also note that I [http://harrypotter.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=block&user=&page=Ninclow&year=&month=-1 changed Ninclow's block settings] to allow him to edit his talk page per his request; those privileges are to be revoked if in any way abused or, indeed, if you strongly disagree. Hi Starstuff. Is there any chance you could authorize a change to Grindelwald's main image? I think it's fairly obvious that the image should be from Fantastic Beasts, but apparently a vote from five years ago is preventing the image from being updated. I understand the need to establish consensus in most cases, but there should be exceptions, and this is clearly one. I think it's pointlessly bureaucratic to insist on holding another vote just to get the image updated properly... however if that is what needs to happen could you please set it up? Cheers. - {{Xanderen/signature}} 08:58, November 21, 2016 (UTC)

== Beauxbatons and Durmstrang Student Pics ==
  +
Since you have posted some pics of some pics of [[Beauxbatons Academy of Magic|Beauxbatons]] and [[Durmstrang Institute|Durmstrang]] students from ''Goblet of Fire'', could you please add more pics of the students played by their actors featured on the wiki? ([[User:Hobbiton777|Hobbiton777]] ([[User talk:Hobbiton777|talk]]) 19:40, May 14, 2018 (UTC))

:What is the source of this image? As far as I know, there hasn't been an front-facing image of Grindelwald from ''Fantastic Beasts'' released through official channels, only the picture of the back of his head. And if it's something someone captured by taking a picture in a movie theatre with their camera phone, well, in most countries, photographing or filming a screen in a theatre is considered piracy and against the law (yeah, snapping a single frame of a movie is worlds apart from recording the whole thing, but them's the rules). Images obtained through such means present legal issues and probably wouldn't fall under the protection of fair-use provisions. So we should wait until an image becomes available from a legitimate source. And, even then, we should probably still hold a vote to establish consensus and prevent inevitable edit wars. There's no single standard for determining which image should be featured in the infobox of a character's article. Some prefer to use an image of the appearance from the most recent release (in Grindelwald's case, that would be from ''Fantastic Beasts''); some prefer the most recent appearance in terms of the internal chronology of the franchise (in Grindelwald's case, that would be [[Michael Byrne]], who appears in a scene set in 1998); and some just prefer to pick whatever image they deem most ideal in terms of quality. Discussions and votes are generally the best method of hashing out a consensus. <span style="color: green">&#x2605;</span> [[User:Starstuff|<span style="color: green">S</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">a</span><span style="color: dimgrey">r</span><span style="color: green">s</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">u</span><span style="color: dimgrey">f</span><span style="color: green">f</span>]] [[User talk:Starstuff|<span style="color: darkgreen">(Owl me!)</span>]] 09:41, November 21, 2016 (UTC)

Sorry - JKR's comment was just my short-hand summary. The hint in the film & script is that a piece of the Obscurus is seen slipping away. ==Duplicate image removal help==
  +
Hi there! The image policy clearly stated '''"Duplicate images should not be uploaded unless intended to replace a lower quality version of the same image. Obvious duplicate images will be speedy deleted."''' yet the person who uploaded a batch of lower quality duplicate <u>that also contained watermarks</u> responded to the request of removal with ''"Given the amount of duplicate images on this wiki, is it really an issue?"''. I don't care that he is both a Staff and an Admin, how hard can it be to follow and RESPECT a policy on a wiki? Regular users do not have the user right to delete stuff, yet the person who does, chose to ignore what their rights allowed them to do. Hence I'm here contacting another Admin to hopefully do something about it, instead of using some excuse to do nothing and let the duplicate sit around for no good reasons.

On [[Henry]] you have February 1927 as the timeframe for that scene - where did you get this from? I ask because Case of Beasts has some related props with March 1927 on them (Flour order forms and a calendar in the Bakery). I'll upload them later but figured I'd ask in case there is conflicting info to sort out. Cheers --[[User:Ironyak1|Ironyak1]] ([[User talk:Ironyak1|talk]]) 18:01, November 21, 2016 (UTC)
+
On [[Special:Recentchanges]] you can see I've marked 9 files for deletion and have provided what files they are duplicated from. They've also appeared in {{tlx|Fantastic Beasts Characters}}, which is not editable for regular users and is the only reason why they appeared anywhere at all, for, had the template not been locked, the swap could be easily done and they really would just be a bunch of duplicates that are neither higher quality nor being used anywhere.
:The scene heading of Scene 123 (the establishing shot of Jacob's newly-opened bakery) is described as being set "three months later" in the official screenplay book. The main part of the film is set in December 1926, so I just tacked on three months, or at least I thought I tacked on three months. Seems my math is as good as JKR's. :/ <span style="color: green">&#x2605;</span> [[User:Starstuff|<span style="color: green">S</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">a</span><span style="color: dimgrey">r</span><span style="color: green">s</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">u</span><span style="color: dimgrey">f</span><span style="color: green">f</span>]] [[User talk:Starstuff|<span style="color: darkgreen">(Owl me!)</span>]] 18:07, November 21, 2016 (UTC)

I'm sorry that my tone is probably disrespectful and hostile, but as an Admin on other wikis, I know deleting images can be done super fast, so I find it offensive that instead of actually following the policy and taking actions to rectify the mistake, we are given some lame reason for not doing so. Please do something about it. Thanks! Because if that train of thought is acceptable (''"hey, duplicates are already everywhere, why bother, let's just keep on uploading duplicates since it's not something that can be helped"'') what's to stop people from spamming the wiki with duplicates? The duplicates being upload in this case may be a very honest mistake, but after being pointed out and choosing to do nothing, I'd say that's close to intentionally spamming. --[[User:Sammm鯊|<span style="color:#00008B;">S</span><span style="color:#3333A2;">a</span><span style="color:#6666B9;">m</span><span style="color:#9999D1;">m</span><span style="color:#CCCCE8;">m</span><span style="color:#000038;">✦✧</span>]]([[User talk:Sammm鯊|talk]]) 19:26, September 25, 2018 (UTC)

Just an FYI, I think the color themes for the Individual infobox may be hiding out in [[MediaWiki:InfoboxColours.css]]. Perhaps you could try changing a value there and see if that works? If so, it should be pretty straight forward to add the extra themes and we can complete the changeover (if not, the hunt continues). :I've just come back from an extended hiatus. I'm sorry we've fallen behind on wiki maintenance. We're short-handed as far as admins go, and while we definitely need to recruit some more, that's not something I can personally rectify. I've done a "field promotion" once before (Ironyak1) and I'd rather have a proper election this time.
  +
:I'm sorry you received a dismissive response from an admin. I read something from Cavalier One earlier today that seemed like it was a slight directed at me, but it was simply that he'd phrased something poorly, leading to a misunderstanding. So I'd advise giving him the benefit of the doubt here. Today may simply not be the best day for him as far as communication goes.
  +
:We do appreciate your diligence in terms of tagging duplicate images. But we might not always be prompt in dealing with them due to the current admin shortage. I have to go out soon, but I will try to deal with them later, and switch out the images in the template. But it's possible we may get more duplicates of those posters uploaded over the next few days by new or intermittently active users (i.e. people who don't know we already have those images on the site). That's just the way it is whenever new material drops. <span style="color: green">&#x2605;</span> [[User:Starstuff|<span style="color: green">S</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">a</span><span style="color: dimgrey">r</span><span style="color: green">s</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">u</span><span style="color: dimgrey">f</span><span style="color: green">f</span>]] [[User talk:Starstuff|<span style="color: darkgreen">(Owl me!)</span>]] 19:57, September 25, 2018 (UTC)

::::To all of the Admins that have replied: Thank you! The dedication you guys have for this wiki is clearly shown, and I'm sorry that a misunderstanding on my part led to two of you apologizing. I want to make it clear though, I will never hold "not taking action ''immediately''" against anyone (we all have RL!), and I'm sorry it sounded that way, '''my main concern was about whether actions would be taken ''at all''''', and perhaps put in the wrong emphasis about said actions could also be quickly done. I wouldn't have minded how long it took, as long as they were acknowledged as "eventually to be gone", which I did not get from the initial respond.

I'll give it to you that no direct mention of the word 'Zoroastrianism' or "Zoroaster" is made in the HP canon, however I would like to point out that the root word "MAGI" (from which the modern English words "MAGIC", "MAGIZOOLOGY", "MAGICAL" and "MAGICIAN" all derive) comes from the 6th century B.C.E. Zoroastrian term for their followers, specifically, their priests who practiced specific rituals with the intention of invoking supernatural powers (what we today would refer to as 'magic'). They weren't the first to do so, obviously (cthonic gods and goddesses were worshipped by much older civilizations), but they were the first to codify their 'magical summonings' and other such practices in writing. Our westernized understanding of what magic is/isn't is primarily based upon Zoroastrian activities.
+
:::::: Not to hog Starstuff's talk page, but for Sammm, you obviously care about the source material or wouldn't invest your time here. When I saw the reply about rectifying the images, I interpreted the response much as you did and found it a bit, well, cavalier. That said, Cavalier One, Seth Cooper, Starstuff, and Rodolphus have been involved with this wiki for over a decade (!) and as such have plenty of experience and the long view to draw upon - their methods tend to be thoughtful and always well-intentioned, although not infallible. Hopefully RL grants us all more time to apply ourselves here to help facilitate some improvements. I'll leave you with words from a moderator for another site that I respect: "Assume the best and ask questions" - wise advice for staying optimistic but getting at the truth of a situation. Cheers --[[User:Ironyak1|Ironyak1]] ([[User talk:Ironyak1|talk]]) 02:51, September 26, 2018 (UTC)

Ditto for the science of Astrological divination, which IS a course studied in Hogwarts (called merely "Divination") and upon which the Centaurs' entire social structure is based.

==Hello==
  +
Hello Starstuff, my name is Dave and I am a regular contributor here. I asked Ironyak1 about cool people to talk to, and he suggested you. If you need help with anything, feel free to ask!

So, no, Zoroastrianism isn't specifically mentioned, but it's interpretation of the cosmos and in its practices of that faith are a primary influence upon the HP universe. Without Zoroastrian's defined brand of "magic" and the delineation of its practices carried down through the ages, all the way to JKR's belief system on the subject, HP would simply be a story about some people running around using modern weapons to stop a government coup by Nazi-like bigots.

[[Harrypotterexpert101|Harrypotterexpert101]] ([[User talk:Harrypotterexpert101|talk]]) 21:19, October 28, 2018 (UTC)

:Since Zoroastrianism hasn't been mentioned within Potter canon as we define it, even indirectly (say as "that monotheistic religion that starts with 'Z'"), it shouldn't be mentioned within the main body of an in-universe article. The main bodies of in-universe articles are for presenting canonical information about the Potter world from an [[Harry_Potter_Wiki:Policy#.22In-universe.22_point_of_view|in-universe point-of-view]] (i.e., as if the fictional characters, things, and places in the books/films actually exist, and as if the fictional events actually happened).

:There's some leeway given in allowing the presentation of information not presented in canon in an in-universe article if it's necessary to define a subject, e.g. [[Detroit]] is never explicitly stated to be an American city within a [[HPW:CANON|canon source]], but we can assume that the real world location of the city carries over to the Potterverse. Similarly, [[black hole]]s (mentioned on the cover of ''[[A Brief History of Time]]'', a book featured in the third Potter film) are never described/defined within a canon source, but we can assume what they are carries over from reality for the purpose of defining them. But this exception to the general rule only applies to things that are mentioned within canon, which Zoroastrianism isn't.

:But it's fine to discuss the real cultural influences behind things in the books/films within "Behind the scenes" sections. FYI - I separated out {{CB}} into it's own template <nowiki>{{CB}}</nowiki> as it's not a "Fantastic Beasts..." title. Also <nowiki>{{FB}}</nowiki> is going to get increasingly complicated with the future films, screenplays, games, etc so easier to keep these companion books with differing titles separate IMHO. Hope that makes sense!

PS Do you want me to add a page option so it can be cited as <nowiki>{{CB|27}} = The Case of Beasts ... page 27</nowiki>

PPS Do you have a copy now? It's another great MinaLima creation!

:1. Good idea in terms of spinning off ''Cases of Beasts'' into its own template. Regarding future films, it would probably be easiest to create new templates for each film, i.e. <nowiki>{{FB2}}</nowiki>, <nowiki>{{FB3}}</nowiki>, etc.

:2. The page option function is also a good idea.

:Those additions, to be completely frank, are reaching and unhelpful. Modern scientific research has greatly enhanced our understanding of genetics and largely outmoded the deterministic Mendelian model of inheritance. We now know, for example, that there's multiple genes at play in determining eye colour. The idea that male pattern baldness is exclusively inherited from the maternal line has also been debunked. And, even if Mendelian inheritance were still widely accepted, that doesn't mean it should be used as the basis for inferences about a specific characters' appearances and ancestry in articles on this wiki. It's the very worst kind of speculation in that it's spinning sweeping conclusions out of the scantest of canonical evidence. <span style="color: green">&#x2605;</span> [[User:Starstuff|<span style="color: green">S</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">a</span><span style="color: dimgrey">r</span><span style="color: green">s</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">u</span><span style="color: dimgrey">f</span><span style="color: green">f</span>]] [[User talk:Starstuff|<span style="color: darkgreen">(Owl me!)</span>]] 03:32, December 19, 2016 (UTC)

:I'm not really sure what you're requesting of me. Does this have to do with his potential wand wood? If so, that was removed for a valid reason, because, as someone noted, "ebony" refers to the material of the prop wand, and may not be what Graves/Grindelwald's wand is made out of in-universe. Similarly, most of the prop statues and gravestones featured in the films are probably made from painted plaster (it's cheaper to produce and lighter to transport), but if they're supposed to be marble or stone in-universe, then that would be treated as their canonical material. <span style="color: green">&#x2605;</span> [[User:Starstuff|<span style="color: green">S</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">a</span><span style="color: dimgrey">r</span><span style="color: green">s</span><span style="color: dimgrey">t</span><span style="color: green">u</span><span style="color: dimgrey">f</span><span style="color: green">f</span>]] [[User talk:Starstuff|<span style="color: darkgreen">(Owl me!)</span>]] 08:51, December 31, 2016 (UTC)

Hi there, Starstuff! Hope all is well! Tried to find if there was a clear instruction about the matter at [[Harry Potter Wiki:Policy]], but kind of failed; it most likely is mentioned somewhere just not having its own page.

Yeah, I thought about the last name sort, but it's probably going to be one of those refinements that has to wait (for me). Upon digging into the cards I've come to realise that there was (and still is) a lot of missing info. I still need to finish getting images from POA|G PC, then POA|G PS2 (which are mostly unique - See Gringott), review the portable versions of these games for differences/new images, hunt down the HBP|G NDS cards, and look at the real-life cards from Hasbro, Jellybelly, and Marks & Spencer in the UK. Honestly, I'm not even sure how deep this rabbit hole goes :) --[[User:Ironyak1|Ironyak1]] ([[User talk:Ironyak1|talk]]) 18:09, January 2, 2017 (UTC)

So um, when a forum thread hasn't been active for a really long time, and there's something related to be discussed, what's the best practice to proceed?
  +
#Reply at the existing thread, regardless of its active/inactive status or its current length.
  +
#Archive the existing but dead thread (renaming to add "/Archive 1" at the end) and continue the discussion under the same thread title, while providing the archived subpage link within so people can check.
  +
#Start a new thread and name it whatever, then provide the link of the related dead thread within so people can check.
  +
I'm asking because I can imagine people be like, ''obviously just do #1'', but at the same time it can probably go ''why are you bringing up something that's already concluded?''.

== Romilda Vane image ==
+
To be more concrete, the specific thread that led me to asking you is [[Forum:Merging Articles on Unidentified Characters]]; with the lack of sleep, there was a split second that I actually consider just doing #2, and realized how rude it would be.

Hello Starstuff,
+
Fellow User {{u|Kates39}} and I had a relatively in-depth discussion on article [[Rionach O'Neal]] (comparing to the previously virtually non-existing discussion) at [[Talk:Rionach O'Neal#Dumbledore's Army]], where, upon viewing screenshots, we concluded that the article contained some serious misattributions. There's similar issues on other articles, my prime concerns are the following claims:
I was just wondering if I would have permission to change Romild Vane's character bio image? I don't feel it captures what she looks like, and a better image would be of her in the library in the Half Blood Prince. That is al, thanks you

#[[Ryan Nelson]] as [[Michael Corner]]
[[User:Harrypotterfreak233|Harrypotterfreak233]] ([[User talk:Harrypotterfreak233|talk]]) 21:10, January 2, 2017 (UTC)
+
#*(when, according to HPW, he was only credited as "slightly creepy boy". One factor that was used for this deduction, seemed to be because Nelson's character was seen next to [[Ginevra Weasley]]... While it's ''possible'' that he ''really was'' portraying Corner, imo, I think it's a bit weak to claim it's an absolute fact when there's nothing else to support it (if there was, it has not been shared?))
  +
#[[Emma Jayne-Corboz]] as [[Susan Bones]] (claim of recast)
  +
#*(when '''a]''' Jayne-Corboz's [https://www.mandy.com/actor/profile/emma-jayne-corboz Mandy profile] only had her credited as "School Girl" in DH '''b]''' the [[:File:Susan01.png|current infobox image]] is however from OOTP '''c]''' ''personally'', I don't find the girl in the infobox image even looks like Jayne-Corboz, and if that's [[Eleanor Columbus]], I'd wonder why she wasn't credited: '''translation:''' ''I think'' <u>the girl in the infobox is just a random girl people assume to be Susan</u> because she's Hufflepuff and was seen in DA meetings. Again, not enough to support the claim)
  +
#[[Louisa Warren]] as [[Hannah Abbott]] (claim of recast)
  +
#*(when, according to HPW and Warren's [https://www.mandy.com/actor/profile/louisa-warren Mandy profile], she was only credited as "Hufflepuff Senior", which, I've definitely seen credited to other actresses and not just Warren.)
  +
I thought there were more, but for now I can only think of the three above. I feel like, if people want to attempt matching the bunch of unidentified DA members in the OOTP film, it needs to be like [[Nick Shirm]] as [[Zacharias Smith]], where, according to HPW, the actor voiced the character.

== Category:Patronus forms ==
+
In the case of Nelson, "the unidentified Hufflepuff girl that users claimed to be Susan", along with [[Unidentified Ravenclaw Girl during the Battle of Hogwarts]]; I'm wondering if there could be a page documenting "unidentified DA members", just so people won't again try to deduct with little to backup the speculation. [[Sophia FitzGerald]] is one of the Gryffindor girls in the DA meetings; while I'm glad the actress' article does not seem to have been linked (prior to this message), people literally can start speculating that ''oh, she could be the recast of [[Angelina Johnson]], [[Alicia Spinnet]], [[Lavender Brown]], or [[Katie Bell]]'' (despite FitzGerald was also in HBP where the latter 2 also made appearances)

Yep - no problem. I'll let you know when it's done. --[[User:Ironyak1|Ironyak1]] ([[User talk:Ironyak1|talk]]) 01:50, January 17, 2017 (UTC)
+
Those unidentified characters also won't necessarily all be "non-canon": there's nothing to suggest they aren't actually representing specific canon characters, just that at the same time there's also nothing to support that they are.

:[[:Category:Patronus forms]] is done, but it only found 50 pages to move. Is there a naming issue as [[:Category:Patronus Forms]] is now empty?
+
I figured since they are similar issues, it makes more sense to discuss them at one place, just not sure how to go about it, and since a thread that might be appropriate was created by you, I'm just testing waters.

:The Albania Map is tough as it's a small reproduction in {{HPLE|G}}. I can try and see what is possible, but it is blurry to the eye so not sure the scanner is going to do much better. == Templates & Categories ==

I had made FB|C based on the name - ie Fantastic Beasts (...and Where to Find Them, ...Cases from the Wizarding World, etc) but agree that it is its own beast ;) so a separate FBC template makes sense.

On the 20th Century births category cleanup, I was wondering if there are any examples categories in which both a parent category and a child category should ever be on the same article? For births, only the most specific is added e.g. 1971 births, not 1971 births & 1970s births & 20th century births,) same for geography, and any category that I can think of. If this is true, then I can add a clean up option to the bot which removes any parent category from an article that has a child category already added. If there are categories that need to be handled specially let me know. Cheers --[[User:Ironyak1|Ironyak1]] ([[User talk:Ironyak1|talk]]) 18:34, March 9, 2017 (UTC)

In working through having the bot remove redundant categories (eg no need for Hogwarts students when Hufflepuffs is already there - all Hufflepuffs are Hogwarts students), I found the Category tree has many, many issues that need to be fixed first. How come [[User:Tvurta|this user]] hasn't been banned? If it helps, I noticed [[User_talk:Tvurta#Final_warning|this]], and action is way past needing to be taken. That "final warning" gives you cause to infinite ban. It's now impossible to scan his 2100+ edits and ensure that they are high quality and comply with policies, that's why I'm obsessive about policing every edit on my home wiki. If you don't check them as they occur, then the work just keeps piling up. I'm not trying to seem rude, bossy, or condescending, but just sharing my experience in that regard. == RE Creature categories ==

Hey - so the bot removes any parent directory if a child (or grandchild, or great-grandchild, etc) category is present. As [[:Category:Patronus forms]] is in [[:Category:Creatures]] it sees Creatures to be a redundant Category on those articles - any Patronus form article is by definition a Creature and already in that Category tree. Options to address this could include:

*Add a new, more easily found, Creature sub-category (e.g. Creatures by traits, etc). Note that the bot would still remove the Creatures category as being redundant.

*Create exceptions to this categorization rule - Creatures, Actors, Hogwarts students are ones that come to mind, article in which now reside only in the lowest most leaf/leaves of their category tree (e.g. Patronus forms, DH2 actors, Sorted into Hufflepuff, etc...) This would be a loose category tree or a blend between categories and tagging systems.

I discussed this automated enforcement of child-only categories with Seth, but I don't think some of these nuances were clear at the time. If you have ideas, let me know and I can see about adding them to the bot for automated inclusion & correction. Cheers --[[User:Ironyak1|Ironyak1]] ([[User talk:Ironyak1|talk]]) 23:20, August 24, 2017 (UTC)

:The bot runs on command - usually I run it about once every week or two and it is normally set to check the 500 most recent edits, and then up to 5000 random pages (depending on how long I leave my computer on at the time).

:It should allow for multiple child categories of the same Parent category. Looking at an easy-to-understand example, an article can have both [[:Category:Hufflepuffs]] and [[:Category:Sorted in 1992]], but any of the parent categories [[:Category:Sorted in the 1990s]], [[:Category:Sorted in the 20th century]], [[:Category:Hogwarts students by era]], [[:Category:Hogwarts students]], etc, or [[:Category:Individuals by Hogwarts house]], etc) are removed as being redundant.

:As for [[:Category:Vampires]], I can't find where the bot removed [[:Category:Beings]] in the history - do you have a revision in mind? It removed "Non-Humans" which as a parent of "Creatures" was redundant, and then later removed "Creatures" as redundant given "Living Dead" is under "Creatures" via "Creatures by classification". It looks like it took two passes but both of the removed categories are parents of Living Dead, so are seen as redundant - all "Living Dead" are "Creatures" which are all "Non-Humans". Is there a need to have those direct links?

:Note that wikipedia makes the argument for a well structured tree with strict parent & child relationships and with articles appearing at the most specific category (i.e. as far down into the category tree as applicable), which is what the bot is trying to enforce (I can hunt down the article if you want). However, if we want to create exceptions to this rule of categorization that's totally fine by me, we just need to work out the exact rules as they will differ for each exception made (e.g. articles with "Sorted in 1992" can have the parent category "Hogwarts students", but not the intermediate parent categories "Sorted in the 1990s", "Sorted in the 20th century", etc...)

:Hope all that makes sense - as we figure out the rules, I'll have the bot add back the extra exempted parent categories to those articles with a related sub-category (e.g. all "Hufflepuffs" will also be in "Hogwarts students", all "DH2 Actors" will also be in "Actors (real-world)", etc... Leta Edit

Sorry, I never intended to get to far into speculation. Won't add it again until there is a direct confirmation.--Rodolphus (talk) 16:26, February 16, 2018 (UTC)

No worries! But, as the supporting notes even pointed out, the green colour scheme is used for some non-Slytherin characters on Pottermore, including Chastity Barebone. So it would be best to hold off speculating on Leta's possible house until we have more solid information. Starstuff (Owl me!) 16:30, February 16, 2018 (UTC)

Hello, Starstuff, how have you been keeping? Even though I already know your feelings on the matter, I am obliged to show you this so that I can't be accused of any unfairness. Again, of course, you are under no obligation to respond. I should also note that I changed Ninclow's block settings to allow him to edit his talk page per his request; those privileges are to be revoked if in any way abused or, indeed, if you strongly disagree. Duplicate image removal helpEdit

Hi there! The image policy clearly stated "Duplicate images should not be uploaded unless intended to replace a lower quality version of the same image. Obvious duplicate images will be speedy deleted." yet the person who uploaded a batch of lower quality duplicate that also contained watermarks responded to the request of removal with "Given the amount of duplicate images on this wiki, is it really an issue?".

On Special:Recentchanges you can see I've marked 9 files for deletion and have provided what files they are duplicated from. They've also appeared in {{Fantastic Beasts Characters}}, which is not editable for regular users and is the only reason why they appeared anywhere at all, for, had the template not been locked, the swap could be easily done and they really would just be a bunch of duplicates that are neither higher quality nor being used anywhere.

Thanks! Because if that train of thought is acceptable ("hey, duplicates are already everywhere, why bother, let's just keep on uploading duplicates since it's not something that can be helped") what's to stop people from spamming the wiki with duplicates? The duplicates being upload in this case may be a very honest mistake, but after being pointed out and choosing to do nothing, I'd say that's close to intentionally spamming. --Sammm✦✧(talk) 19:26, September 25, 2018 (UTC)

I've just come back from an extended hiatus. I'm sorry we've fallen behind on wiki maintenance. We're short-handed as far as admins go, and while we definitely need to recruit some more, that's not something I can personally rectify. I've done a "field promotion" once before (Ironyak1) and I'd rather have a proper election this time.
I'm sorry you received a dismissive response from an admin. I read something from Cavalier One earlier today that seemed like it was a slight directed at me, but it was simply that he'd phrased something poorly, leading to a misunderstanding. So I'd advise giving him the benefit of the doubt here. Today may simply not be the best day for him as far as communication goes.
We do appreciate your diligence in terms of tagging duplicate images. Starstuff (Owl me!) 19:57, September 25, 2018 (UTC)
Hello! I'm already replied on Sammm's page about this, but this is for Starstuff's benefit -- I will rectify the issue within a couple of hours when I am more able to unless you get to it first. If you do Starstuff, then please note the images to be deleted are in Template:Fantastic Beasts Characters on the main page and need to be replaced. Also, I apologise unreservedly for the comment on Talk:Nagini that you almost took in the wrong way -- it was indeed a bad choice of words just like the response to this issue originally. It appears I am having a bad day with words today! As for the admin issue, I plan to be back on a more regular basis which I hope will help with the issue. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 20:19, September 25, 2018 (UTC)
I've done a "field promotion" once before (Ironyak1) and I'd rather have a proper election this time. - Having second thoughts huh? Well fine then! (don't have a lot of time to edit, but can make time to harass you ;) FWIW, the Main Page's FB template has been updated and lower-res duplicate images have been deleted. What is good for the plebs is good for the gander, or something, although I agree there are more pressing concerns. Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 20:30, September 25, 2018 (UTC)
To all of the Admins that have replied: Thank you! The dedication you guys have for this wiki is clearly shown, and I'm sorry that a misunderstanding on my part led to two of you apologizing. I want to make it clear though, I will never hold "not taking action immediately" against anyone (we all have RL!), and I'm sorry it sounded that way, my main concern was about whether actions would be taken at all, and perhaps put in the wrong emphasis about said actions could also be quickly done. I wouldn't have minded how long it took, as long as they were acknowledged as "eventually to be gone", which I did not get from the initial respond.
As Mike said, he wrote to me and I now know I took the statement the wrong way, so all is good, really! Extra thanks to Ironyak1 for doing the swap and deletion. You are superb and awesome.
Now I almost feel like I threw a tantrum and feel quite embarrassed about it, but again, thank you all for the patience you've shown! --Sammm✦✧(talk) 20:58, September 25, 2018 (UTC)
Cavalier One - No worries! We all have off days and I totally understand. Thanks for acknowledging the missteps all the same. :)
Ironyak1 - I didn't meant to imply that I regretted granting you admin rights. Only that I did it the once without going through the formal process because we were in desperate need of active admins at the time and nominations were failing by default due to a lack of votes. I wouldn't want to do it again with another user as it might seem like I was disregarding an important community procedure to enact my own preferences. Also, thanks for seeing to the duplicate files.
Sammm - No worries. The duplicate images have now been taken care of.
I was hoping to get some more editing in today, but I'm beat. Going to sign off until tomorrow. :) Starstuff (Owl me!) 01:51, September 26, 2018 (UTC)
Not to hog Starstuff's talk page, but for Sammm, you obviously care about the source material or wouldn't invest your time here. Cheers --Ironyak1 (talk) 02:51, September 26, 2018 (UTC)

How to find new fantasy franchises to get into Edit

Hello Starstuff,

I am currently doing a study on the challenges fantasy fans face in finding the next fantasy franchise they would like to get into and where to get access to that content.

Given your role as an admin for the Harry Potter wiki, I would be keen to interview you to get your thought on this. What would be the best way to do this and would you have some availability to connect on this over the coming weeks?

Forum protocolEdit

Hi there, Starstuff! Hope all is well! Tried to find if there was a clear instruction about the matter at Harry Potter Wiki:Policy, but kind of failed; it most likely is mentioned somewhere just not having its own page.

So um, when a forum thread hasn't been active for a really long time, and there's something related to be discussed, what's the best practice to proceed?

  1. Reply at the existing thread, regardless of its active/inactive status or its current length.
  2. Archive the existing but dead thread (renaming to add "/Archive 1" at the end) and continue the discussion under the same thread title, while providing the archived subpage link within so people can check.
  3. Start a new thread and name it whatever, then provide the link of the related dead thread within so people can check.

I'm asking because I can imagine people be like, obviously just do #1, but at the same time it can probably go why are you bringing up something that's already concluded?.

To be more concrete, the specific thread that led me to asking you is Forum:Merging Articles on Unidentified Characters; with the lack of sleep, there was a split second that I actually consider just doing #2, and realized how rude it would be.

Fellow User Kates39 and I had a relatively in-depth discussion on article Rionach O'Neal (comparing to the previously virtually non-existing discussion) at Talk:Rionach O'Neal#Dumbledore's Army, where, upon viewing screenshots, we concluded that the article contained some serious misattributions. There's similar issues on other articles, my prime concerns are the following claims:

  1. Ryan Nelson as Michael Corner
    • (when, according to HPW, he was only credited as "slightly creepy boy". One factor that was used for this deduction, seemed to be because Nelson's character was seen next to Ginevra Weasley... While it's possible that he really was portraying Corner, imo, I think it's a bit weak to claim it's an absolute fact when there's nothing else to support it (if there was, it has not been shared?))
  2. Emma Jayne-Corboz as Susan Bones (claim of recast)
    • (when a] Jayne-Corboz's Mandy profile only had her credited as "School Girl" in DH b] the current infobox image is however from OOTP c] personally, I don't find the girl in the infobox image even looks like Jayne-Corboz, and if that's Eleanor Columbus, I'd wonder why she wasn't credited: translation: I think the girl in the infobox is just a random girl people assume to be Susan because she's Hufflepuff and was seen in DA meetings. Again, not enough to support the claim)
  3. Louisa Warren as Hannah Abbott (claim of recast)
    • (when, according to HPW and Warren's Mandy profile, she was only credited as "Hufflepuff Senior", which, I've definitely seen credited to other actresses and not just Warren.)

I thought there were more, but for now I can only think of the three above. I feel like, if people want to attempt matching the bunch of unidentified DA members in the OOTP film, it needs to be like Nick Shirm as Zacharias Smith, where, according to HPW, the actor voiced the character.

In the case of Nelson, "the unidentified Hufflepuff girl that users claimed to be Susan", along with Unidentified Ravenclaw Girl during the Battle of Hogwarts; I'm wondering if there could be a page documenting "unidentified DA members", just so people won't again try to deduct with little to backup the speculation. Sophia FitzGerald is one of the Gryffindor girls in the DA meetings; while I'm glad the actress' article does not seem to have been linked (prior to this message), people literally can start speculating that oh, she could be the recast of Angelina Johnson, Alicia Spinnet, Lavender Brown, or Katie Bell (despite FitzGerald was also in HBP where the latter 2 also made appearances)

Those unidentified characters also won't necessarily all be "non-canon": there's nothing to suggest they aren't actually representing specific canon characters, just that at the same time there's also nothing to support that they are.

I figured since they are similar issues, it makes more sense to discuss them at one place, just not sure how to go about it, and since a thread that might be appropriate was created by you, I'm just testing waters.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. --Sammm✦✧(talk) 20:16, March 21, 2019 (UTC)

Henry Shaw Senior Edit

Hello Starstuff, I am an editor who is currently sorting some images I have uploaded into their correct categories, including one of Henry Shaw Senior. In the category for images of him, I have seen you deleted it a while ago, but I am just letting you know I am re-creating it, as I have realised its existence and have recently uploaded an image of him, so I would think it best for these categories to be accordingly categorised. Happy editing and have a good easter. RedWizard98 (talk) 02:23, April 20, 2019 (UTC)

Hello Edit

Hello starstuff, I'm Newt. Just here to say that you are doing a great job as an admin. Not that it matters for you, but I could not stop myself to compliment you. I mean a lot of archives there, you might be here for quite a long time, I suppose. Hope to talk to you someday. Cheers!

RE Hey! Edit

Happy Holidays to you and yours Starstuff! I was glad to see your message and hope you are doing well. As for Rowling, everyone's got an opinion. At least we'll always have Prisoner of Azkaban. (Here's looking at you kid ;) --Ironyak1 (talk) 06:07, December 21, 2019 (UTC)

Bigotry isn't an "opinion." It is bigotry, and bigtory is wrong. Starstuff (Owl me!) 22:13, May 29, 2020 (UTC)
