This key opened Vault 12 in Gringotts Wizarding Bank: the personal vault of Percival Rackham. It also acted as a Portkey which could transport one who touched it to the ruins of Percival Rackham's house. It was kept within a casing that could only be opened by one who possessed the latent power of ancient magic.[2]

History[]

After many centuries, the key came into the possession of Miriam Fig, a researcher who was investigating ancient magic. It was given to George Osric shortly before her death. Osric gave the key to Eleazar Fig, Miriam's husband, while they travelled on a carriage to Hogwarts Castle on 1 September 1890. A new fifth-year student who was travelling with the two of them was able to see ancient magic swirls on the key's case, and took it for closer investigation.[2]

The key revealed itself within the box, much to the amazement of the adults. When the carriage was attacked by a dragon, under the control of Ranrok, resulting in Osric's death, the key fell from its case towards the ground. Eleazar quickly summoned the key, which transported them to the ruins of Percival Rackham's house.[2]

After investigating the local area, Eleazar and his student located Vault 12 through an ancient magic passage. They used the key to enter the vault, after which they were locked in by a banker under the instructions of the late Percival Rackham.[2]
