The Vaults Guardian was a Giant Fire Crab placed in one of the vaults of Gringotts Wizarding Bank to guard the spellbook for the Fire-Making Spell contained within. Gaining access to the vault required a special key made of five different coloured gemstones.

• In the GBA version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter had to defeat and kill this creature to learn the Fire-Making Spell and clear the cobwebs blocking the entrance to Vault 687.
  • Destroying Fire Crabs in the video games is canonically inaccurate, as Fire Crabs are in fact a highly endangered species. Therefore, it cannot be considered canon that Harry would have destroyed an endangered Fire Crab in such a mission. Harry would have also learnt the Fire-Making Spell in his first year at Hogwarts.
