"Hermione was the only one who had managed to turn vinegar into wine; her glass flask was full of deep crimson liquid."
— Description[src]

This charm (incantation unknown) was used to turn vinegar into wine. It was a spell taught to N.E.W.T. students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Charms class.[1]

History[]

This spell was taught by Professor Flitwick to sixth-year students during the 1996–1997 school year in Charms class. If cast incorrectly, said vinegar may turn into ice or explode. This happened to Harry Potter and Ron Weasley respectively. Harry and Ron spent most of the lesson talking to each other, rather than practising the spell. They were assigned extra practice as homework. Hermione Granger was the only student present who achieved the correct results of the spell.[1]

Practitioners[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • At first sight, this spell seems to change one thing into another, rather than adding properties to it, technically making it a transfiguration spell, despite being taught in Charms class. However, when one considers that vinegar is produced through the oxidation of ethanol it is entirely possible that what this charm does is revert that naturally occurring mechanism and not transform one thing to another, stricto sensu — effectively making it a Charm spell.
