- "Oops! Totally skipped the introductions. I'm Wénshī, a fifth year in Slytherin."
- — Introduction[src]
Wénshī Scrivenshaft[2] (Chinese: 文师)[3] was a wizard and Slytherin student who lived in the early 21st century. His family owned the Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop in Hogsmeade.[4]
Biography[]
Wénshī was born at some point between 1 September 1995 and 31 August 1996 to the family that owned Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop, where he grew up. He began his education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in September 2007. He was Sorted into Slytherin.[4]
In the 2011–2012 school year, during his fifth year, he attended some of Professor Kate Brindlemore's Defence Against the Dark Arts lessons along with the fourth-years, as the professor thought he needed "a bit of extra review" to pass his Ordinary Wizarding Level. In one of these classes, Wénshī met a fourth-year Slytherin, Fischer Frey, who bragged to him about his adventures and battle against a forest troll in the Forbidden Forest before being interrupted by another fourth-year, who revealed that the story was a lie and that Fischer had never gone into the depths of the forest.[4]
When his deceit was uncovered, Fischer challenged the student to accompany him into the Forbidden Forest that night. Initially, the student decided not to go, but later changed their mind. On their way to the forest that night, they spotted a suspicious cloaked figure entering the forest and decided to follow, unaware that it was none other than Wénshī. Before the student could catch up with Wénshī, they were attacked by a Dementor and fell unconscious.[4][5]
Later that night, Wénshī stole a valuable goblin-forged sword from the Headmistress' office. The caretaker, Argus Filch, immediately suspected Ivy Warrington, Daniel Page, and their friend, who had been sneaking around the castle that same night. The trio later encountered Wénshī in Diagon Alley, catching him in possession of the sword. When they questioned him about the theft, Wénshī replied "none of your business". Just before parting ways, one of the students mentioned that the owner of Borgin and Burkes would not easily agree to a deal involving the sword, based on a prior conversation they'd had with him. This visibly disappointed Wénshī, who then left the sword on the pavement, telling them they could have it before walking away. The three returned the sword to the Headmistress and, hoping to uncover the full story behind the theft first, falsely framed Peeves for the crime. Meanwhile, Wénshī received a letter from his father, which he promptly discarded after reading.[6]
Later, during Defence Against the Dark Arts, Wénshī practised the Patronus Charm but accidentally lit a gramophone on fire. He later spoke with the fourth-year student about his situation, revealing that Scrivenshaft's was struggling due to the recent Dementor attacks in Hogsmeade Village. Wénshī admitted that he had made a deal with the loan shark Midas Gullveig, who would take the shop if Wénshī could not repay him by the end of the month. He also confessed that he had stolen the sword because its value could tide his family over. To discuss further, the two decided to meet behind the greenhouses and Hogsmeade.[7]
They visited Honeydukes, where Wénshī hosted a fundraiser, and managed to cheer up the villagers with some jokes. The joy faded when Midas entered the sweet shop and threatened Wenshi, demanding he pay the bill. Midas later returned with his Dementor, which attacked Wénshī, causing him to faint before being chased away by the students. Ivy and Daniel later discussed the situation, and the student recalled bumping into Midas weeks earlier and noticing something in Midas's briefcase. Daniel brewed a Memory Potion for his friend to help them remember what it was: Wénshī's father's wand.[7]
From that moment, Wénshī became obsessed with the hypothesis of what had happened to his father. He tried to hunt down Midas, but his friends urged him not to, insisting they first inform Harry Potter, the Head Auror, about everything they knew regarding Midas. However, Harry found their story unconvincing, as there was no solid evidence. Determined to find proof, they decided to have Wénshī invite Midas for a drink at the Hog's Head Inn while the others secretly searched his briefcase, where they discovered a key.[8]
Ivy used the Avenseguim spell to locate the lock that the key unlocked, leading them to a chest in the ruins of the Forbidden Forest. Inside, they found a man held captive — Wénshī's father — who had been imprisoned for knowing too much about Midas's dark business. Midas soon appeared with Wénshī, under the Imperius Curse, and they fought. However, Wénshī managed to resist and broke free from the curse.[8]
