A wanted poster was document used by both Wizardkind and Non-magic people which showed an individual that the organisation who issued the wanted poster wanted to find. Various wanted posters were issued, especially during times of crisis such as the First and Second Wizarding Wars and the rise of Gellert Grindelwald's Alliance in the early 20th century.
Description[]
A wanted poster typically included the name of the issuer (such as the British Ministry of Magic or the International Wizarding Police), an image of the criminal in question, a list of the crimes they were wanted for, a reward, and usually also warnings not to approach the criminal since they were 'wanded' and highly dangerous. However, depending on the criminal and the body issuing the wanted poster, various sections may be removed. In particular, between the two Wizarding Wars, the British Ministry of Magic wanted posters didn't include rewards or details of the crimes, with the posters merely asking that the relevant authorities be notified if the individual was spotted.[1]
History[]
As Gellert Grindelwald began to come to power, various wanted posters were produced by the International Wizarding Police and the British, German, and American wizarding governments.[2]
When Newton Scamander accidentally broke into the Steen National Bank along with Jacob Kowalski, the New York Police Department produced wanted posters bearing Newt and Jacob's likeness. Additionally, as he had broken the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy by revealing the presence of the Wizarding World to a No-Maj, MACUSA also produced a wanted poster, but this time specifically for Newt.[2]
Following Sirius Black's escape from Azkaban in 1993, wanted posters featuring his likeness were posted all around various magical locations like Hogsmeade in order to inform wizards of the threat he posed.[3] Three years later, following several Death Eaters' breakouts from Azkaban, their wanted posters were posted in the Daily Prophet and around Diagon Alley.[4]
During Lord Voldemort's takeover of the British Ministry of Magic, wanted posters for Harry Potter as "Undesirable No. 1" were produced and distributed, initially by the Daily Prophet but eventually by other wizarding newspapers as well such as The Quibbler.[5]
