Water hyacinth is an invasive aquatic plant with lavender flowers and glossy leaves.[1]
Overview[]
The water hyacinth, native to tropical regions, was known for its extraordinary reproductive rate and rapid growth, sometimes doubling in size within a week. If left unchecked, it could easily become an invasive species, covering the water surface and harming local ecosystems. Its mature leaves had a sheen, and its light purple flowers stirred the heart, making it an attractive but potentially dangerous plant.[2]
Once adapted to life in lakes or aquariums, the water hyacinth required little special care and, with sufficient sunlight, quickly produced light purple buds. The plant developed fibrous roots and leaf stalks filled with air chambers stretched out unnoticed, allowing it to thrive.[2]
History[]
During the 2010s, water hyacinth seeds were available for purchase from Gabbey, the house-elf who managed the Bewildering Blooms centre since Yubert Thorne's imprisonment. A student who was part of the botanical Career Research program planted and grew this flower.[3]
