- "Now, when I blow my whistle, you kick off from the ground, hard. Keep your brooms steady, rise a few feet, and then come straight back down by leaning forward slightly. On my whistle — three — two —"
- — Madam Hooch using a whistle during a first-year Flying lesson[src]
A whistle is an instrument which produces sound from a stream of forced air.[13] It was used by a Quidditch referee to signal the start of a game, fouls, time-outs and ends a game.[2][3][4][5][6]
History[]
There existed a spell to turn a whistle into a pocket-watch.[14]
Madam Rolanda Hooch owned a whistle, and used it in order to signal students during her Flying lessons with them at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[1]
Hassan Mostafa wore a silver whistle during the final match of the 1994 Quidditch World Cup, which protruded underneath his moustache.[7]
A whistle was used during the first task of the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in late 1994, in order to signal each of the Champions when it was their time to compete.[15] In 1995, Ludovic Bagman used a whistle to signal the start of the second task of the Tournament,[8] along with the third task afterwards.[9]
Angelina Johnson owned a whistle, which she used during her role of Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team.[10][11]
In 1995, during the first meeting of Dumbledore's Army, Harry Potter had the members of the group practise the Disarming Charm. After a while, it came time for them to stop, but the level of noise was such that nobody could hear Harry shouting for them to stop. He thought to himself "I need a whistle" and the Room of Requirement provided, as he immediately spotted one lying on top of the nearest row of books, which he picked up and blew hard.[11]
When he was appointed Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team in 1996, Harry Potter was given a whistle, which he used during the team's tryouts.[12]
