William de Cognac was a wizard whose portrait was hung on the Grand Staircase beside the Transfiguration Classroom.[1]

Biography[]

Post mortem[]

During the 2008–2009 school year, his portrait overheard Daniel Page and one of his classmates express concern that the caretaker, Argus Filch, had it out for them, and offered reassurance by commenting that problems were often easier to solve by staying calm and composed, as great wizards kept their calm even in the most dire circumstances. He then proceeded to tell them a story about the duel in the Ministry Atrium between Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort, which, according to his friends hung in the Ministry of Magic, was "most epic".[2]

He also once asked the student what their name was but then decided it didn't matter because he wouldn't remember it anyway. He found it difficult because the students always looked so similar in their robes with their wands. He then remembered the boy with the scar but still couldn't quite find his name in his memory.[1]

One night, he saw the student, Kevin Farrell, and Robyn Thistlethwaite searching for Ivy Warrington in the Grand Staircase. They asked him if he had seen anyone, to which William responded with irritation that they had disturbed a peaceful night. After informing them he had only seen them, he threatened to tell Argus Filch that they were out of their dormitories.[3]
