A winged armchair is an armchair with "wings" mounted to the back of the chair often stretching down to the arm rest.[3]
History[]
In 1943, Horace Slughorn had a comfortable winged chair in his office at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which he would rest in while conversing with members of the Slug Club.[2][4][5]
In 1993 and 1995 at least, Sybill Trelawney had a winged armchair near a fireplace at the front of the Divination Classroom which she would sit in while teaching.[1][6][7][8]
Behind the scenes[]
- The purpose of the "wings" was to enclose the head or torso areas of the body in order to provide comfortable protection from drafts, and to trap the heat from a fireplace in the area where the person would be sitting.[3]
