- — Winifred talking with Ivy, before vanishing herself[src]
During her childhood, both Winifred and her sister Ivy were accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but their Muggle father decided to keep Winifred back, as sometimes when she was angry, her magic became unpredictable, and he was afraid she might hurt somebody. Winifred was very unhappy and resentful about not attending as she wanted to go to the school, and was especially glad she could be there with her sister. As Ivy was preparing to leave, she told Winifred she promised to speak to the professors at Hogwarts so they could speak to their father to make him change his mind. Winifred resentfully got angrier and angrier and attempted to cast Evanesco on her case, but the spell backfired on her and she vanished instead. Afterwards, their grandmother put a Memory Charm on Ivy so she would forget what happened to her, but it caused her to completely forget Winifred.[5]
At the end of the 2010–2011 school year, Ivy saw Winifred lying in a bed at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. A witch there said she had been talking to Winifred for three years while she was unconscious. When Ivy touched Winifred, she woke up and said "you" were in trouble and "he" was watching. Ivy thought she meant her, but Winifred pointed at her friend.[5]
New school year[]
Before the start of the 2011–2012 school year, Winifred studied the lessons she missed during the three years she was missing and was able to understand all of them with the help of her twin sister.
On 1 September 2011, while everyone was buzzing about the Intercontinental Wizard's Cup that would soon take place, Ivy was excited to finally have Winifred by her side. Before the Sorting Ceremony, Winifred discussed with Ivy's friend, whom she had met at the hospital, the warning she gave when she woke up. Ivy's friend concluded that it might have been just a dream, to which Winifred replied, "probably". Later, Winifred was Sorted into Slytherin and chose to sit beside Cassandra Vole, Ivy's school rival. When Cassandra asked why she chose to sit beside her sister's rival despite being told about her, Winifred answered, "I'm nothing like my sister".[6][8]
Later, in the Care of Magical Creatures class, Winifred tried to deal with a Blast-Ended Skrewt, and denied Ivy when the latter offered to help. When she could not handle the Skrewt, Cassandra showed up and protected Winifred. Ivy saw the entire scene and felt neglected, for it was supposed to be her who protected Winifred, not Cassandra. Daniel Page suggested that Winifred had been missing for so long that she most likely became different, causing Ivy to run away.[6]
The next day, Winifred and Cassandra went to Professor Flitwick to sign up for the Intercontinental Wizard's Cup (Winifred was not chosen), and met Ivy and her friend there. Ivy tried to talk to Winifred, but was rejected by her, and belittled by Cassandra, who also claimed that Winifred wanted nothing to do with and was afraid of Ivy.[8]
On the Saturday after the first challenge of the competition, Winifred joined the barbecue picnic that was held near Hagrid's Hut. During the picnic, Viggo Victor laced Kenji Kobayashi's drink with something that aggravated his blood malediction, turning him into a hazardous fox-like beast. After Kenji was brought to the Hospital Wing, Winifred whispered to herself that she could see darkness in him. Ivy, having overheard her twin sister, approached to ask what she meant. Winifred then told Ivy to step away, saying she could also see the darkness in her. Ivy, realising Winifred had somehow perceived her "dark vision", wondered how she had seen it. Determined to understand better, Ivy decided she would need to ask Cassandra for help, as Cassandra was the only fellow student whom Winifred trusted and confided in.[9]
