These letters were responses to Rita Skeeter's article "Harry Potter's Secret Heartache". Many of these letters were rude, and Hermione was advised to simply burn them after receiving them, like Hagrid, who had received similar, but harsher letters after the publication of Rita Skeeter's article "Dumbledore's Giant Mistake". The mail was delivered by a grey owl, a Tawny Owl, a Brown Owl and four Barn Owls. Hermione chose to open the grey owl's letter first.
This letter's contents were unknown (if there was even a letter inside), but the envelope contained undiluted bubotuber pus, which spattered her, causing Hermione to leave the Great Hall and seek medical attention at the Hospital Wing.
