The Wyvern[1] was a giant, dragon-like, bird-like, winged magical beast with a long tail that possessed the ability to inflate sections of its body.[3]
Description[]
The Wyvern resembled a Dodo, but with a long, feathery tail and short, stubby wings that appeared incapable of flight. Despite this, it took to the air, undergoing a transformation. As it soared, it puffed up like a puffer-fish and floated like a balloon, rapidly flapping its wings like a hummingbird. Once it reached the sky, it underwent another change: its body deflated as its wings expanded greatly. Its tail also grew incredibly long, capable of carrying objects far heavier than its own weight.[4]
A baby Wyvern resembled a young Common Welsh Green.[5] A Wyvern inhabited swampy areas and ate fish.[3]
History[]
In the Middle Ages, the Wyvern of Wye was a dragon-like beast that terrorised Medieval England and was slain by Sir Cadogan.[2]
By 1890, a fountain with the likeness of a Wyvern was present in the Transfiguration Courtyard at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Rumors spread throughout the castle that the fountain represented the Wyvern of Wye, likely started by Cadogan's portrait. However, the fountain was known to represent a completely separate Wyvern.[5]
By 1932, Newton Scamander had encountered a Wyvern and contained it within his suitcase. Upon finding a surviving baby Qilin next to the body of its deceased mother in Kweilin, China, an extremely worn-out Scamander sent Teddy and Pickett into his suitcase to alert the Wyvern to emerge from the case to help them. Upon exiting the case, the Wyvern wrapped up Scamander, the baby Qilin, Pickett, and Scamander's suitcase in its tail and flew them all safely away from the scene.[3]
Cadogan's portrait on the Grand Staircase in Hogwarts Castle compared Beatrice Haywood to a Wyvern observing a flock of sheep to Jacob's sibling in the 1989–1990 school year, given how she frequently viewed the canvas she had been trapped in.[6]
