Yubert Thorne was a pure-blood wizard and Herbologist, who owned the plant shop Bewildering Blooms in the 2010s.[2] He also owned a house-elf named Gabbey.[4]
Biography[]
Hogwarts years[]
At age eleven, he began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into Slytherin house.[2] He thought the dormitories were dull but his talent for Herbology took root. After graduation, he opened the plant shop Bewildering Blooms in Hogsmeade.[5]
During the Second Wizarding War, Yubert was a supporter of Voldemort and the Death Eaters. He was very disappointed with their defeat at the Battle of Hogwarts and wanted to take revenge on those responsible.[6]
2010s[]
Bewildering Blooms[]
In the 2010–2011 school year, he greeted a Muggle-born student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when they visited his shop for the first time. At first, he suggested they buy a very expensive plant but then offered them a thriving Puffapod for free, considering they were "just a student". Although the Puffapod looked dead, Yubert thought it would really put their Herbology skills to the test.[5]
Mysterious Malady[]
At some point, Yubert started poisoning the enemies of Voldemort who fought at the Battle of Hogwarts. He did so with his own creation, Bloom For You plants, which grew for the person they were bred for by using a piece of their hair. After collecting the hair of several people, he gave out these plants to them which caused them to fall into a deep sleep. The first people affected were Molly Weasley, Luna Lovegood, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Seamus Finnigan and Ginevra Weasley. This unexplained epidemic was dubbed the "Mysterious Malady".
Later in the same year, Professor Neville Longbottom also suddenly fell into a deep, unwakeable sleep. A plant-based Healer from St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries named Astrid Cole was sent to Hogwarts to work alongside other professors in order to find an antidote for the Mysterious Malady. Upon her arrival, she suspected that Yubert had something to do with the malady, as he arrived at the school moments before Professor Longbottom was affected.[7] Yubert then took over for Neville and taught Herbology. During one lesson, he had students collect plant samples outside to help find a cure for the Mysterious Malady. He thought Rubeus Hagrid could be their guide if they go deep in the Forbidden Forest but agreed it was too dangerous so they decided to search a clearing instead.[8]
One day, Yubert gave a Bloom For You plant to Cassandra Vole who was supposed to take it to Professor McGonagall. Yubert's plan to poison her was inadvertently thwarted when Cassandra decided to keep the plant for herself and was poisoned by it instead.[8] Eventually, during the night, Astrid and the student crept into Bewildering Blooms, where they found evidence to prove the identity of the true villain behind the Mysterious Malady. This included hair in jars belonging to Battle of Hogwarts participants, among which were Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley.[6]
Villain captured[]
After realising Yubert was having a drink with McGonagall in the Three Broomsticks Inn with the intention of poisoning her, they raced to warn her and heard a voice from the back of Hogsmeade. The two immediately went to the scene where they encountered the villain standing over McGonagall who was lying unconscious in the street. Discovering it was Yubert himself, he ran away while they pursued him.[6]
Yubert knocked Astrid out, leaving the student to face him on their own. They threw a Mandrake at Thorne just in time and captured him. While waiting for Aurors to arrive and arrest him, Thorne revealed that all of "his" Mysterious Malady victims were target because they fought against Lord Voldemort during the Battle of Hogwarts, and that the malady was his attempt at revenge for the Dark Lord's defeat. Thorne was imprisoned in Azkaban for his crimes.[6]
Personality and traits[]
Yubert was flamboyant, overly-confident, and jovial. He liked magical plants and things that were larger-than life both literally and metaphorically. He disliked Muggles, boring, non-magical plants and monochromatic outfits.[2]
Magical abilities and skills[]
- Herbology: Being a Herbologist, Thorne was knowledgeable about magical plants.[2]
