《哈利·波特》系列小说在英国美国分别由布卢姆茨伯里出版社学乐集团出版。由于英式英文和美式英文的一些常用词不相同,因此两个版本的《哈利·波特》的文本内容存在一定差别。例如对于表示大垃圾桶的词汇,英国版中会使用“skip”,而美国版中则会使用“dumpster”。虽然有的人认为美国读者没理由不知道英式英文的表达方式,但这种修改还是有一定逻辑的。不过,还有一些差异比较不容易解释得通,比如美国版中没有提及小天狼星古灵阁巫师银行金库编号

最著名的用语差异要数第一本书的书名了。J.K.罗琳当时不情愿地接受了学乐集团的亚瑟·莱文提出的这一改变。她说自己现在已经后悔作出了改名字的决定,但她在当时觉得自己必须接受编辑的提议。她从未想过这本书在未来会变得家喻户晓,以至于没办法再把名字改回来。这一改变现在也成了《哈利·波特》出版史的一部分。
